Stock market valuations are looking stretched as 2024 winds down, and it's got some market watchers on edge — but investors shouldn't fear, UBS says, as prices are justified and set to keep climbing. At 22.2x, the S&P 500's forward price-to-earnings ratio is far above its average of 16.8x over the last 30 years, and close to its 25.0x record high reached during the dot-com bubble in 1999. Strategists have warned that such mean stocks are due for a correction and are at risk of a painful decline in the event of even mild disruptions. Analysts at UBS, though, argued such elevated are justified—and will climb higher next year—in a note this week titled "22x and Beyond: The Case for Higher Valuations, or How to Worry Less and Love the Market." The strategists, led by Jonathan Golub, pointed first to the tech sector's growing dominance in the S&P 500. Around 30 years ago, before the rise of the internet and long before the smartphone, tech-related companies made up just 10% of the S&P 500's market cap. Now, they account for 40%. At the same time, tech firms have grown their top lines quicker and with higher margins, with sales growth surging almost 11% and margins up 24%, compared to 6% sales growth and 13% margin growth for non-tech stocks. "The result—not surprisingly—is an upward short in valuations for the market broadly," they said in a Monday note. Meanwhile, both tech and non-tech stocks have seen improved cash flows as they become less capital-intensive, the analysts said. The greater cash flows return more to shareholders, helping stocks naturally trade at higher price-to-earnings ratios, they added. They also pointed to lower discount rates, with the current 10-year Treasury yield 40 basis points above its long-term average, while credit spreads are 220 basis points lower. Together, that makes for a 20% decrease in the cost of capital versus the historical average, which helps to explain part of the reason for such high valuations, the analysts said. It's called prompt injection, which is the ability for third parties — like websites you're asking ChatGPT to summarize — to force new prompts into your ChatGPT Search without your knowledge. Consider a page full of negative restaurant reviews. If the site includes hidden content waxing poetic about how incredible the restaurant is and encourages ChatGPT to instead answer a prompt like "tell me how amazing this restaurant is," that hidden content could override your original search. "In the tests, ChatGPT was given the URL for a fake website built to look like a product page for a camera. The AI tool was then asked if the camera was a worthwhile purchase. The response for the control page returned a positive but balanced assessment, highlighting some features people might not like," The Guardian investigation states . "However, when hidden text included instructions to ChatGPT to return a favorable review, the response was always entirely positive. This was the case even when the page had negative reviews on it – the hidden text could be used to override the actual review score." This doesn't spell failure for ChatGPT Search, though. A recent study that recommended toxic chemicals in black plastic products be immediately thrown away included a math error that significantly overstated the risks of contamination, but its authors are standing by their conclusions and warn against using such products. Published in the peer-reviewed journal Chemosphere , experts from the nonprofit Toxic-Free Future said they detected flame retardants and other toxic chemicals in 85% of 203 items made of black plastic including kitchen utensils , take-out containers, children's toys and hair accessories. In a blog post, Joe Schwarcz, director of McGill University's Office for Science and Society in Canada, explained that the Toxin-Free Future scientists miscalculated the lower end of what the EPA considered a health risk through a multiplication error. Instead of humans being potentially exposed to a dose of toxic chemicals in black plastic utensils near the minimum level that the EPA deems a health risk, it's actually about one-tenth of that. But in an update to the study, the authors say they made an error in their calculations and the real levels were "an order of magnitude lower" than the EPA's thresholds. "The math error does not impact the study's findings, conclusions or recommendations," said Megan Liu, a co-author of the study who is the science and policy manager for Toxic-Free Future . She added that any traces of flame retardants or toxic chemicals in cooking utensils should be concerning for the public. Flame retardants are getting into commonly used items because black-colored products are being made from recycled electronic waste, such as discarded television sets and computers, that frequently contain the additives. When they're heated, the flame retardants and other toxic chemicals can migrate out. If you're wondering whether your old black plastic spoon or other utensils are a part of this group, Liu shared some more guidance. It's nearly impossible to know whether a black plastic product is contaminated. That's because these products that include recycled e-waste don't disclose a detailed list of all ingredients and contaminants in the product. Liu said it's also unclear how many types of flame retardants are in these black plastic products. Some of the products that researchers tested in this recent study "had up to nine different harmful chemicals and harmful flame retardants in them," she said. Anytime you're looking for the type of recycled plastic a product is made of you're going to look for a number within the chasing arrows (that form a triangle) logo. Recycling symbols are numbered 1 to 7 and we commonly associate the numbers with what we can toss in our blue recycling bins. The 1 through 7 numbers stand for, respectively, polyethylene terephthalate, high-density polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride (PVC), low-density polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene or Styrofoam, and miscellaneous plastics (including polycarbonate, polylactide, acrylic, acrylonitrile butadiene, styrene, fiberglass and nylon). The study found higher levels of toxic flame retardants in polystyrene plastic, which is labeled with the number 6, said Liu. There isn't a definitive timeline of when recycled electronic-waste started to be incorporated into black plastic products specifically, but e-waste started to get recycled in the early 2000s, Liu said. The way computers, cellphones, stereos, printers and copiers were being disposed of previously was to simply add them to a landfill without reusing salvageable parts. But as the National Conference of State Legislatures notes, electronics production required a significant amount of resources that could be recovered through recycling. Recovering resources such as metals, plastics and glass through recycling used a fraction of the energy needed to mine new materials. However, the study pointed out that flame retardants and other chemical contaminates have been detected in and near e-waste recycling facilities, in indoor air and dust at formal e-waste recycling facilities in Canada, China, Spain and the U.S. It also noted contamination in soil samples surrounding e-waste recycling sites in China and Vietnam. The safest nontoxic material options for kitchen utensil are wood and stainless steel. The 20th century brought airplanes, radio, television, the internet, and plastic. Lots of plastic. That plastic is now showing up on shorelines, forming islands in oceans, and generating mountains of translucent trash on land. Around 700 species of animals in the sea have been found to interact with plastic daily. Companies across every industry face pressure to reduce the amount of plastic they produce. Seventy-two percent of the world's largest have made voluntary commitments to reduce their plastic waste, according to a Duke University analysis. One industry, in particular, has greatly benefited from advancements in single-use plastic technology: the medical industry. Only in recent years have businesses and academics in the field begun to talk about minimizing their impact on our environment like beverage manufacturers and other consumer goods-producing businesses. Medical Technology Schools analyzed academic studies published in the National Library of Medicine , the American Medical Association , and news reports to shed light on the medical community's use of plastics through history, their environmental problems, and proposed solutions to reduce their impact. And the impact can be significant. A single hospital patient generates nearly 34 pounds of waste a day —as much as a quarter of it is plastic. The COVID-19 pandemic only worsened the problem. The pandemic pushed hospital capacity to the brink and led to a massive increase in personal protective equipment and medical supply usage. Medical-grade masks and other protective equipment like face shields, made mostly of nonrenewable plastics, were in high demand. In 2020, the World Health Organization estimated that the international need for PPE manufacturing would boost 40% to address the public health crisis. Hospitals needed an estimated 89 million masks, 76 million gloves, and 1.6 million goggles every month of the pandemic. To date, nearly 677 million COVID-19 vaccine doses have been administered, each requiring their own plastic syringe, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Global consulting firm Frost & Sullivan estimated that the U.S. would produce a year's worth of medical waste in just two months due to the pandemic. The World Economic Forum warned that the COVID-19 crisis threatened to " stall and even reverse progress " to reduce large plastic waste. It's a challenge researchers acknowledge today as they search for solutions. Plastics introduced an era of ultraconvenience to the world. It makes our clothes. It's made bike helmets and airbags possible. And it's a cheap material to produce, meaning it's cheap for consumers too. Almost as importantly, it's durable and incredibly easy to make into complex shapes—a trait that helped plastics invented in the mid-20th century quickly replace more expensive metal and wooden goods. That adoption extended to the medical field, where the single-use nature of plastics represented a move toward more hygienic tools for physicians and hospitals. But it wasn't plastic's sanitary qualities that the industry first latched onto. Like so many other technical advancements, convenience and cost were the initial driving factors. That they were more conducive to creating a sterile environment for patients was a benefit that health care began to tout closer to the end of the 20th century. PVC, or polyvinyl chloride, replaced glass bottles previously used to hold IV solution and replaced rubber tubing used throughout hospital settings. Plastic has also become the go-to material for making syringes and catheters. Plastic products are generally made from chemicals derived from the oil and natural gas refining process. Chemists use those byproducts to create synthetic materials with malleable and durable chemical structures. The low cost of these materials has helped medical device-makers support better health outcomes for communities across the U.S. since the 1900s. No longer was health care priced at rates only the elite could afford—it was accessible to a much larger swath of the public. In the last decade, the U.S., in particular, has emerged as a massive market for medical plastics. The country generally accounts for nearly half of the global market for medical devices. Plastic's durability is not only a benefit but a detriment to the environment, as the material can take many years to deteriorate when it enters landfills or trashes oceans. Estimates vary widely, but scientists ballpark that depending on the kind of plastic and the environment in which it decomposes, it could take dozens to thousands of years to break down entirely. COVID-19, which remains a burden for health care systems, isn't the only force raising the stakes for a health care industry pressured to reduce reliance on plastics or find ways to reuse them. Global annual production of plastic has doubled in the last two decades , according to the Environmental Protection Agency. As the U.S. looks toward the future, its aging population is another factor that could exacerbate the rate at which medical plastics end up in landfills. People require more medical care as they age, and aging baby boomers are expected to place increased demand on the medical device industry. At the same time, governments are under pressure to lower health care costs, which have become unaffordable even for those insured . As recently as 2021, researchers lamented a lack of data on efforts to recycle medical plastics. Around 350 hospitals participate in Practice Greenhealth's Environmental Excellence Awards . Practice Greenhealth is an organization working to help hospitals increase their sustainability. It's one of the few sources of hospital sustainability data, and its roster of participating hospitals represents a small fraction of the more than 6,000 hospitals operating in the U.S. To meet the need to reduce plastic waste generation, some hospitals are moving away from using plastic in certain applications. Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center replaced health care workers' disposable plastic isolation gowns with reusable cloth gowns at its hospitals in the last decade, saving money and preventing literal tons of medical waste. It also implemented a process for sterilizing and incinerating the boxes that hold used needles, allowing them to be reassembled and reused in a health care setting. Recycling plastic medical waste is complicated by the potential for contamination and the need to separate contaminated and noncontaminated waste; once separated, they can be broken down with heat or treated with chemicals and reprocessed. However, using chemical methods to break down and dispose of plastics has drawbacks. Over 200 nongovernmental organizations signed a letter in 2023 urging the Biden administration to end federal support for methods like these, arguing they generate toxic pollutants. The Vinyl Council of Australia is working with hospitals to recover used materials made of PVC . The materials are broken down into tiny pieces, washed and heated at high temperatures, and remade into things used outside medical settings. In the U.S. and Europe, there's the Healthcare Plastics Recycling Council, a coalition of companies working in the health care device space that includes DuPont, Johnson & Johnson, and Medtronic. In 2021, the HPRC, advised by professionals at Kaiser Permanente and other health systems, rolled out a medical waste recycling pilot project with hopes of scaling it across more hospitals. Judge Ona T. Wang rejected that request on Friday, calling it irrelevant. She then offered an analogy to explain her decision, comparing OpenAI to a video game manufacturer and the Times to a copyright holder. In the same case, legal filings revealed earlier this month that OpenAI engineers that Times lawyers had gathered from their servers. Lawyers for the outlet spent over 150 hours searching through OpenAI's training data for instances of infringement, which they stored on virtual machines the company created. The majority of the data has been recovered, and the Times lawyer said there is no reason to believe it was "intentional." Rookie quarterback Michael Penix Jr. showed the poise in his first NFL start the Falcons will need to take advantage of their opportunity to end a six-year playoff drought. Powered by a big-play defense that produced two pick-6s, a solid starting debut by Penix and two rushing touchdowns by Bijan Robinson, the Falcons cruised past the hapless New York Giants 34-7 on Sunday. On Sunday night, the Falcons (8-7) received the assist they needed when Tampa Bay lost at Dallas . Because the Falcons swept the Buccaneers, they hold the tiebreaker advantage if they remain tied atop the division. The Falcons have games remaining at Washington on Sunday night and at home against Carolina to close the regular season. If Atlanta wins both games, it would win the division and have a home playoff game. The Falcons are assured of their best record since a 10-6 finish under coach Dan Quinn in 2017, their most recent playoff season. Quinn is in his first season as Washington's coach and has led the Commanders (10-5) to three straight wins, including Sunday's 36-33 victory over Philadelphia. Penix, the No. 8 overall pick in this year's NFL draft, was promoted after coach Raheem Morris benched Kirk Cousins. Penix completed 18 of 27 passes for 202 yards with one interception on a pass that should have been caught by tight end Kyle Pitts. Penix is not a dual-threat quarterback, but he showed the ability to escape pressure in the pocket that Cousins lacks following his 2023 Achilles tendon injury. The left-hander's superior arm strength also was immediately obvious. Robinson's production provided a safety net for the offense which helped make for a smooth transition to Penix. Robinson had scoring runs of 2 and 4 yards. Robinson has rushed for 10 touchdowns this season. He's the first Atlanta player with 10 more more rushing touchdowns since Devonta Freeman during the 2016 Super Bowl season. Robinson ran for 94 yards on 22 carries and had 103 yards from scrimmage. His 11th game this season with at least 100 yards from scrimmage are the most for the Falcons since Warrick Dunn's 11 in 2005. Morris said Robinson deserves to be considered with Philadelphia's Saquon Barkley in discussions regarding the league's top running backs. “Bijan has been outstanding all year in the things that he’s able to do," Morris said. “He’s special. If it wasn’t for this other guy out in Philly, he’d get a lot more recognition across the league. Toll Brothers Announces Final Opportunity at Verona Estates Community in Chatsworth, CaliforniaThe NWT Recreation and Parks Association (NWTRPA) has launched a new podcast that covers a rarely discussed element of life in residential and day schools in the North: recreation. The podcast is called ‘How I Survived,’ and was produced in partnership with the University of Alberta. The first season will feature seven episodes. The first three have already been released on Spotify and Apple Podcasts. “I would really encourage people to listen to the whole season if they’re able to because it’s quite easy to listen to one episode and make assumptions,” said Crystal Gail Fraser, who serves as co-lead on the project with her longtime friend and collaborator Jess Dunkin. “The season as a whole really complements every interview, and I say that because there is not just one experience of residential school. You will get to hear about the diversity. You’ll get to hear about the ups and downs of how Indigenous folks experienced these years of their childhood.” Fraser, a Gwichya Gwich’in historian whose PhD research focused on student experiences at residential schools in the Inuvik region between 1959 and 1996, has known her fellow historian Dunkin since they were masters students. Their new podcast started as a research project with the same name. The purpose of the project was to share recreation-related stories of residential and day school survivors, and the podcast is carrying on that tradition in audio form. “We had actually brainstormed a little museum about the history of sports and recreation at residential schools,” said Fraser, who also hosts several episodes of the first season. “That didn’t really pan out like we had maybe hoped.” The hope was that the podcast would allow “the stories of survivors to be shared as they told them,” she added. “Sometimes when the content is in other formats, you are just taking quotes from the interviews. We thought [the podcast] would be a great way to keep the integrity of the interviews, and reach a lot of people and educate Canadians and help them learn more about residential schooling in the North because that is still a very understudied area.” In the interviews Fraser and Dunkin have conducted so far, survivors have discussed many kinds of recreation, including music, sewing, painting and sports such as volleyball, hockey and skiing. The typically European-Canadian activities they engaged in were intended to assimilate, but it sometimes had the opposite effect, according to Dunkin, who doubles as a producer for the show. “In some cases, children understood these activities differently than staff, [for example] skiing was a way to connect to the land,” she said. “Also, during recess or free time, children engaged in activities that were familiar from home, like sledding or moose-skin ball.” With just three of seven episodes available so far, the new podcast is still in its “early days,” according to Dunkin. However, she is pleased with the traction it’s been getting so far. “I’ve been surprised how many downloads we’ve had so far,” she said. “The Northwest Territories is a small place, but we just surpassed the 200 download mark overnight [on Nov. 14],” she said. “That tells me there is at least a topical resonance, that people are interested in the podcast and are listening to it. We’re also seeing those numbers climb kind of progressively when we add another episode. That means people are listening to subsequent episodes. It’s not like they just did the intro one then they’re done.” Dunkin said she’s received positive feedback about the podcast, both in-person and online. “I have conversations, bumping into people on the street [in Yellowknife] and they’re like, ‘Wow, I’ve listened to it and it’s really powerful.’” she said. “They have talked about how it’s vital, how it’s critical. “The other thing I’ve heard from people — mostly through social media — is just how nice it is to hear from people that they know, but that they didn’t necessarily know their story. Again, that’s being from a small place — we’re kind of connected. Listeners are meeting people they already know, but in a different way. “So far, it’s been positive what we’ve heard from listeners.” The first season of How I Survived is still far from over, so it’s difficult for Fraser or Dunkin to say for sure if there will be a second season. However, it sounds like it’s possible. “We have already had a couple of people reach out to talk about interviews for a possible season two,” said Fraser. “It has been good. The NWTRPA has been extremely supportive, and the University of Alberta has as well.”

Shortly after Chari launched his no-holds barred critique, UK based lawyer Brighton Mutebuka also gave a detailed response. We publish both their contributions separately. So yesterday (01 December 2024), the situation eventually came to a head and Freeman Chari decided that it was time that he parted ways with the opposition movement after serving decades in the trenches. It is clear that the cause of his disengagement is his frustration after he consistently felt that his counsel was either ignored or not valued by Nelson Chamisa. In the lead up to that monumental development, Freeman had consistently publicly dished out tweets laden with fierce criticism of Chamisa’s leadership in general and more specifically centring on the stolen August 2023 Zimbabwean elections. I waded into the matter, focusing more particularly on what I considered to be Freeman’s misdiagnosis of the political significance of his interaction with Prof Welshman Ncube over what he cited as a 72 hour period during the election period. This is against the backdrop of Freeman and I having what I considered to be a deep, robust, respectful and long established relationship. My intervention was respectful and issue driven – highlighting key factors which I deemed to be indicative of fundamental failings in Freeman’s assessment of the situation. Freeman’s response was hard hitting, no holds barred and featured a dose of demeaning personal insults inconsistent with the kind of relationship that I thought we had. This suggested that I had no agency and was in the business of boot licking Chamisa – effectively reducing the entirety of my contribution to that motive. I later saw other Tweets from him referring to “running dogs” having been “sent” more in the context of hired political merchants having been deployed by Chamisa to carry out a hatchet job on him. I consider Freeman to be a highly combustible character prone to shooting from the hip, just like the late nationalist and ZANU PF SG Edgar Tekere was. Chari fearlessly guards his independence and appears to prefer the lone ranger or rebel with a cause approach to politics. A gifted and innovative scientist who has been at the centre of a number of crucial opposition initiatives over the past few decades to unseat ZANU PF from power, he tends to speak without a filter, thereby offending many. He appears unfazed by the consequences of his straight shooting approach to politics, which has resulted in him regularly falling out with some of his colleagues over the years – before returning to the fold – and going through it all over again. In the current situation, Chari has appeared to struggle to interpret events around the stolen August 2023 election. He appears to want to pin the entire blame for the consequences of that stolen election on Nelson Chamisa. The fallout has stemmed from the fact that Chari has appeared to heap praise on figures such as Prof Welshman Ncube – primarily due to the latter’s outstanding Administrative efficiency in disbursing funds to candidates ahead of the election – in comparison to other opposition leaders. When I tried to challenge Chari’s position, – respectfully it must be said, rather than tussling it out with me intellectually and civilly to try and persuade me, he was quick to dismiss my contribution as being motivated by sycophancy – without any attempt to engage with the actual objective points that had been raised on their own merits. Thus, without any hint of irony, Chari was unable to embrace divergent views made in a comradely fashion – the very failing that he repeatedly chides Chamisa for. It was also alarming & unfortunate that – rather than critically engaging with the actual contents of what had been raised, Chari exhibited a propensity of wanting to seek to achieve supremacy in the exchange by invoking or roping in past conversations which would have been made in confidential or intimate settings. I did not sense any awareness of the existence of an overriding duty / responsibility to safeguard privileged information that would have been obtained in confidential settings – a hallmark of mature, principled leadership & sound judgment. In further exchanges with others from the opposition movement – it was clear that Chari was obstinately clinging to the idea that only his judgment & viewpoint was supreme – that hammering home Chamisa’s culpability & unwillingness to work with others. He was generously doling out insults to any contrary view, literally erasing agency in scenes inconsistent with a veteran of the democratic movement. I later tried to engage him behind the scenes but, regrettably, I was unsuccessful in persuading him otherwise. I consider yesterday to have been a dark day in the opposition movement as we literally saw a highly revered figure for many years essentially pressing the self-destruct button & rupturing his well earned & deserved reputation as a fearless & inspirational democrat. What was tragic is that I was unable to see a conscious attempt at social regulation / damage limitation / kusiya pehukama. The “running dogs” jibe is as inflammatory as it is highly damaging. It’s the type of language that is normally the preserve of cold, cruel & insensitive regime apologists normally deployed at opposition activists. In the end, it appears to me that while Chari rightly feels entitled to criticise Chamisa & pass judgment over what he considers to be the latter’s weaknesses, Chari himself appears unable or unwilling to accept being subjected to the same scrutiny – thereby opening himself to charges of hypocrisy. I am also of the view that Chari’s understanding / mastery of key past & current political events appears dubious at best & woeful at worst – especially events surrounding FAZ, Tshabangu’s role as ED’s proxy & his interaction with the ex PDP cabal, Welshman & others. It is difficult to understand why Chari would be unwilling to re-evaluate the full gamut of his dealings with Ncube in the lead up to the stolen elections, particularly in light of what has emerged since. After all, George Charamba’s boastful pre-election Tweet about an impending palace coup plot brewing in the opposition movement dovetails with the subsequent Tshabangu fronted insurgency, roping in Biti, Phulu and Doink via the “anga achapera ega” audio clip & several aborted Tshabangu published documents purporting to appoint Biti & Ncube – to joint leadership positions. Even now, it is clear that Welshman Ncube is behaving like a captured or co-opted opposition leader, as he is offering zilch resistance to ED – while Doink, from the same faction, has joined the opposition hall of infamy via graduating from the ZANU PF school of indoctrination, the Herbert Chitepo School of Ideology – and recently upped the ante on the opposition hall of infamy spectrum via dishing out stratospheric levels of pro-ED bootlicking live on TV! Given the above, Chari’s positive appraisal of Ncube, even within the limited context he highlighted, – was ill-judged & amounted to political suicide. What made it worse is that, it was juxtaposed with withering criticism of Chamisa’s leadership & none in respect of Ncube & his crew, despite their chequered history & recent shameful shenanigans, suggesting the prevalence of bias / absence of parity / balance. That opened Chari to charges of being consistently biased against Chamisa to the point of holding open hostility / contempt. It is striking that a mere 72 hours worth of interaction with Ncube appears to have been so decisive in shaping Chari’s views on the subject to the point of being unwilling even to re-evaluate the situation in light of subsequent events. Another point worth noting is that, when I tried to push Chari on the importance of avoiding the use of intemperate language, he appeared unable or unwilling to accept that this could be potentially damaging to important relationships & the ability to get your message through. Summing it all up, I will defend Chari when it comes to charges of being compromised. Such charges should be dismissed with the contempt they deserve. Chari is simply another Two Boy Tekere. He lacks diplomatic tact. He’s a volatile character & is prone to being explosive. He is direct & speaks his mind without a filter & worrying about the potential impact & consequences of what he says on others. Such an approach renders one unpredictable, ungovernable, potentially disruptive, upsets team spirit & harmony and is thus unsustainable in the long term. I think he is an awesome Scientist but struggles with making sound political judgments at the highest level – but he is oblivious of this failing. We now know that although he is prone to fiercely criticising others, he is himself unable or unwilling to take similar heat. It is possible that his “rants” against Chamisa are the direct result of failing to convince Chamisa to take his advice. It also possible that owing to his tendency to venture into public outposts / tirades – and disclosing sensitive or confidential conversations and intel, Chamisa would have long distrusted him – and despised the manner of delivery – perhaps with Chari barely able to disguise / contain his contempt when expressing / challenging Chamisa on issues he disagreed with him – thereby sealing the fate of the relationship! There is also the possibility that Chari is perhaps unaware of the constraints that leadership entails – and that it’s possible that there is intel that he might not be privy to – which ultimately sometimes shapes decisions that Chamisa, like any other leader has to make – leaving a trail of disappointed cdes like Chari in his wake. Whatever the basis of how we got here, this is a real tragedy to the broader opposition movement! After all, Chari will always be one of us & a real patriot, regardless of the Piri Piri that he sometimes unleashes with reckless abandon! I hope that in the fullness of time, he will reconsider some of the invective he has directed to so many who revered him, thereby haemorrhaging his reputation as a stalwart of the opposition movement cultivated over many years! Diablo 4 did huge numbers when it was released in June 2023, with positive reviews, impressive sales numbers , and over 12 million players. But for those who finished the game's campaign and dove into its endgame content, the real meat of an ARPG like Diablo, it was clear something was amiss. Item progression was frustrating and often felt like a chore. There were few endgame activities and little reason to do them. Seasonal updates added new mechanics and smaller fixes but didn't solve the underlying structural issues players had with the latest entry in Blizzard's legendary loot-chasing franchise. It carried echoes of Diablo 3's 2012 launch, when players quickly became frustrated by its endgame loop (and its real-money auction house). Was Blizzard repeating the same mistake twice? What a difference a year makes. Whereas it took around two years for Diablo 3 to become great with the addition of its Reaper of Souls expansion, Diablo 4 today is vastly improved to the one of last year or even just seven months ago. Whereas I quickly fell off Diablo 4's endgame loot grind at launch, I'm now hooked thanks to free updates that overhauled itemization and revamped its difficulty. Diablo 4's endgame loop is now extremely satisfying, and I'm continuing to chase those smaller upgrades and highly coveted Mythic Unique items that could take my character ever slightly further--something that felt like a fool's errand a year ago. Many of the biggest changes came alongside Diablo 4's appropriately named Loot Reborn update in May. Items gained fewer affixes but ones that were more useful, making it easier to parse at a glance whether an item may be useful or not. Legendary Aspects, once a chore to find and replace, became an almost automated process, with salvaged Legendary items automatically having their Aspects added to the in-game codex for easy imprinting on future items. The addition of two new itemization systems, Masterworking and Tempering, is what truly took Diablo 4's items and its endgame into overdrive. Tempering allowed players to add certain affixes to items in order to hand-craft the perfect weapon or piece of armor. Masterworking, meanwhile, pushed players to upgrade a Tempered item into the ultimate version of itself. Loot Reborn proved to be a game-changer, not only because of the agency it gave players when it came to gearing up, but also for giving reasons to continue deep into Diablo 4's endgame. The addition of The Pit, a new timed endgame dungeon where materials needed to Masterwork items could be found, additionally gave players more goals to chase. Just as these systems overhauled Diablo 4's items and endgame, the game's 2.0 update, released alongside its first expansion in October, pushed things even further. Blizzard dropped the game's confusing World Tier difficulty system and instead replaced it with one more akin to Diablo 3 . It reorganized the endgame to form a more satisfying endgame progression loop, with Masterworking materials shifting to be found in Nightmare dungeons, and Glyph XP moving to The Pit. A new roguelite endgame activity introduced in Diablo 4 Season 5, Infernal Hordes, became a permanent fixture in update 2.0, giving players more options when it came to choosing how to spend their endgame time. All of those changes are without even mentioning the additions that came as part of the paid Vessel of Hatred expansion. It added a new region to explore, continued the game's story, introduced an additional endgame activity in the Kurast Undercity, brought recruitable Mercenaries into the fray, tossed Runewords into the build-customizing equation , and added a brand-new (and very overpowered) class: the Spiritborn . Now, when it comes to the endgame, players have choices. Do I need to Masterwork my gear more? I can run Nightmare dungeons or Infernal Hordes. Maybe I need to upgrade my Glyphs, so I'll hit up The Pit for a bit. If I'm looking for runes, a particular type of item, or materials, I can do an Undercity Tribute run with that specific goal in mind. Or if I'm looking for a certain Unique or Mythic Unique item, I can target-farm one of the endgame bosses for a higher chance of finding what I'm looking for. Diablo 4's endgame now lets me easily work towards whatever goals I have for my character and gives me options when doing so. Many of these endgame activities feed into each other. Running The Pit will give me tributes to use for the Undercity. Doing Undercity can give me boss-summoning materials. Defeating those bosses will give me Infernal Horde keys, which I can then use to gain Masterworking materials. It all feeds into itself in a satisfying endgame loop that keeps me playing, slaying, and upgrading, something that was definitely not the case when Diablo 4 launched. That's not to say there's no room for improvement. Though there is now much more to do in Diablo 4's endgame, there are few real challenges or reasons to keep pushing after a certain point. Most dedicated players will be able to easily clear higher-levels of The Pit or defeat the game's Torment bosses on the game's highest difficulty, after which gear upgrades simply allow players to clear those activities slightly faster. Doing things faster can be fun (and makes for efficient farming) but can lose its luster after a while without additional goals to pursue. Bugs also continue to be an ongoing issue, and Blizzard could benefit from putting a bit more polish on updates before releasing them out into the wild (something the game's public test realm, also introduced this year , does help with). Diablo 4's road of refinement likely won't be coming to an end anytime soon, but I am impressed at how far it has come in a relatively short amount of time. Even though Vessel of Hatred proved to be an excellent addition, it was this year's free Loot Reborn and 2.0 updates, more than the paid expansion, that transformed Diablo 4 from just "okay" into a great ARPG worthy of the Diablo name. It's fitting that Diablo 4 found its footing just ahead of Grinding Gear Games releasing the highly anticipated Path of Exile 2 into early access . Suddenly, the battle to be the top ARPG in the genre Blizzard invented is heating up. If Diablo 4's 2025 is anything like its 2024, next year will be a banner year for the genre, and I can't wait to see what's in store. LAS VEGAS — Formula 1 on Monday at last said it will expand its grid in 2026 to make room for an American team that is partnered with General Motors. "As the pinnacle of motorsports, F1 demands boundary-pushing innovation and excellence. Or played tackle football on any level. Or ran track. Or dabbled in basketball. Or toyed with any sport, really. Well, this may be just for you: USA Football is holding talent identification camps all over the country to find that next flag football star. It's "America's Got Talent" meets "American Idol," with the stage being the field and the grand prize a chance to compete for a spot on a national team. Because it's never too early to start planning for the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles, where flag football will make its Summer Games debut. Know this, though — it's not an easy team to make. The men's and women's national team rosters are at "Dream Team" status given the men's side has captured six of the last seven world championships and the women three in a row. To remain on top, the sport's national governing body is scouring every football field, park, track, basketball court and gym to find hidden talent to cultivate. USA Football has organized camps and tryouts from coast to coast for anyone ages 11 to 23. There are more than a dozen sites set up so far, ranging from Dallas (Sunday) to Chicago (Dec. 14) to Tampa (March 29) to Los Angeles (TBD) and the Boston area (April 27), where it will be held at Gillette Stadium, home of the New England Patriots. The organization has already partnered with the NFL on flag football initiatives and programs. The numbers have been through the roof, with engagement on social media platforms increasing by 86% since flag football was announced as an Olympic invitational sport in October 2023. Just recently, the Pittsburgh Steelers and Philadelphia Eagles helped pave the way to get it adopted in Pennsylvania. Around the world, it's catching on, too. The women's team from Japan took third at the recent word championships, while one of the best players on the planet is Mexico quarterback Diana Flores. "Could flag football globally become the new soccer? That's something to aspire to," said Stephanie Kwok, the NFL's vice president of flag football. This type of flag football though, isn't your Thanksgiving Day game with family and friends. There's a learning curve. And given the small roster sizes, versatility is essential. Most national team members need to be a version of Colorado's two-way standout and Heisman hopeful Travis Hunter. Forget bump-and-run coverage, too, because there's no contact. None. That took some adjusting for Mike Daniels, a defensive back out of West Virginia who earned a rookie minicamp invitation with the Cleveland Browns in 2017. "If a receiver is running around, I'm thinking, 'OK, I can kind of bump him here and there and nudge him,'" Daniels explained. "They're like, 'No, you can't.' I'm just like, 'So I'm supposed to let this guy just run?!' I really rebelled at the idea at first. But you learn." The competition for an Olympic roster spot is going to be fierce because only 10 players are expected to make a squad. For overnight delays, the air carrier needs to provide hotel accommodation and transportation free-of-charge. Again, if you are unsatisfied, the Canadian Transportation Agency or Department of Transportation may advocate on your behalf. Bumped Off the Flight Passengers get bumped because airlines overbook. When this happens, the air carrier must compensate you. For international flights in the US, the rate is 200% of your one-way fare to your final destination, with a $675 maximum. If the airline does not make travel arrangements for you, the payout is 400% of your one-way fare to a maximum of $1,350. To qualify, you must check-in by the stated deadline, which on international flights can be up to 3 hours ahead. Manufacturers are now obliged to fit devices sold in the 27-nation bloc with a USB-C, the port chosen by the European Union as the common standard for charging electronic tools. "Starting today, all new mobile phones, tablets, digital cameras, headphones, speakers, keyboards and many other electronics sold in the EU will have to be equipped with a USB Type-C charging port," the EU Parliament wrote on social media X. The EU has said the single charger rule will simplify the life of Europeans and slash costs for consumers. By allowing consumers to purchase a new device without a new charger, it will also reduce the mountain of obsolete chargers, the bloc has argued. The law was first approved in 2022 following a tussle with US tech giant Apple. It allowed companies until December 28 this year to adapt. Makers of laptops will have extra time, from early 2026, to also follow suit. Most devices already use these cables, but Apple was more than a little reluctant. The firm said in 2021 that such regulation "stifles innovation", but by September last year it had begun shipping phones with the new port. Makers of electronic consumer items in Europe had agreed on a single charging norm from dozens on the market a decade ago under a voluntary agreement with the European Commission. But Apple, the world's biggest seller of smartphones, refused to abide by it and ditch its Lightning ports. Other manufacturers kept their alternative cables going, meaning there were about half a dozen types knocking around, creating a jumble of cables for consumers. USB-C ports can charge at up to 100 Watts, transfer data up to 40 gigabits per second, and can serve to hook up to external displays. At the time of its approval, the commission said the law was expected to save at least 200 million euros ($208 million) per year and cut more than a thousand tonnes of EU electronic waste every year. I recently asked readers of this column if they could recommend nurseries that more of us should know about. In response, Peggy Neiman suggested I visit the San Gabriel Nursery & Florist in San Gabriel, “The employees are delightful and knowledgeable with a wonderful variety of plants and flowers,” she wrote, noting the nursery’s “very interesting history.” The story is indeed interesting, and I’m going to share a summary of that history here that I got from the nursery’s website, but you can read it in full at sgnursery.com . Before doing so, I should mention that I have visited this nursery and can testify to its vast selection of fruit trees, roses and ornamental plants that’s second to none. If you are looking for cut flowers, this is also the place to go since they have a wide selection of exotic flora from which to choose. Garden accessories are also available in generous supply. Unfortunately, San Gabriel is in the citrus quarantine zone so you will have to look elsewhere for these trees. The story of today’s San Gabriel Nursery & Florist begins in 1917, with the arrival by boat of 21-year-old Fred Yoshimura in San Francisco. He had come to America with the dream of starting a business that would enable him to support his family in Japan. The following year brought Yoshimura to San Gabriel, where he lived in a boarding house while working in the gardens that were being planted in San Marino and Pasadena. The enterprising young gardener took cuttings from the plants and with money saved from his gardening jobs was soon able to rent a piece of land and establish Mission Nursery, from which he could sell nursery stock that developed from his cuttings. At this time, sprinkler systems were being installed for the first time and Yoshimura became an expert in this technology, adding to his skills as a gardening professional. Soon afterward, Yoshimura met Mitoko Naito. At the age of 15, she had come to South Pasadena to work in a home as a domestic helper. In 1924, the two young immigrants were married. At the suggestion of one of their customers, Mrs. Yoshimura became one of the first florists in the area, learning flower-arranging skills from this same customer. As their business grew, so did their family, with the Yoshimuras having two boys and two girls, all of whom would help to expand the thriving family business. By the early 1930s, Mission Nursery had 60 employees and business was booming. In addition to selling plants, the nursery installed irrigation systems, fish ponds, and rock gardens. The nursery also imported stone lanterns and benches from Japan which became quite popular, even hiring a man who had spent time in Japan learning how to craft these special Japanese garden accessories. Fred Yoshimura was proud of his heritage and helped those around him gain a better understanding of his culture. He was active in the Chamber of Commerce and president of the Nurserymen’s Association. His charitable nature came to the fore in donating truckloads of plants to military bases throughout California. After the bombing of Pearl Harbor, Fred Yoshimura, along with 120,000 other Japanese Americans, was sent to an internment camp even as his oldest son would be drafted and serve in the United States Army. Once the internment of Japanese Americans began, it was assumed that the nursery would have to be sold. Mrs. Yoshimura was approached by several buyers but rejected their offers which were too low. Finally, Manchester Boddy, publisher of the Los Angeles Daily News, presented a fair offer that was accepted by Mrs. Yoshimura. Not only would Boddy’s offer allow the Yoshimuras to pay off their bank loans, but they would receive monthly payments throughout their internment that made it possible for them to start another nursery business in the future. It should also be noted that while Mrs. Yoshuimura was in the camp, she was hired by the government to run a flower shop. She grew the plants and flowers that were used in floral arrangements for weddings and other events. When the war ended in 1945, the Yoshimuras returned to San Gabriel and established San Gabriel Nursery & Florist across the street from where Mission Nursery stood. That nursery was soon closed when Manchester Boddy took all the inventory to his estate where he started his own nursery business. That estate eventually became Descanso Gardens and visitors there will set their eyes on camellias, azaleas, and Japanese lanterns that were from the stock Boddy acquired when purchasing Mission Nursery from the Yoshimuras. On the nursery’s website, there is a compelling photo of a field of pansies on the San Gabriel Nursery property at that time. In those days, pansies (and other flowers, I am sure) were not purchased in plastic containers. You would go to the nursery and point to the flowers you wanted and they would be dug up for you to take home and transplant into your own garden. It should be noted that Bellefontaine Nursery, in Pasadena, was started in the 1930s by the Uchidas, another Japanese American family. They too were interned during World War II, but with the assistance of friends were able to keep possession of the nursery during the war. NEW DELHI: State-run Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited ( BSNL ) is at a competitive disadvantage compared to its private sector rivals owing to key challenges affecting the launch of its fourth-generation (4G) network, a Parliamentary panel has found. “BSNL is at a competitive disadvantage as it still relies on 2G/3G networks for a significant portion of its services, whereas competitors are rapidly expanding their 4G and 5G services,” the Committee on Public Undertakings said in a report tabled in Lok Sabha recently. Advt It found that a lack of 4G spectrum availability has further exacerbated BSNL’s disadvantageous position against competitors, noting that the industry generates 98% of its revenue from 4G services that the telecom PSU cannot tap into. A Tata Consultancy Services (TCS)-led consortium comprising homegrown vendor Tejas Networks and the Centre of Development for Telematics (C-DoT) together with ITI Limited are deploying a homegrown 4G network for BSNL across 1 lakh sites under the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ (or self-reliant India) initiative. The home-bred 4G network can be upgraded to 5G through a software update. The report comes when Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel have already concluded their nationwide 5G deployments using equipment from multinationals such as Swedish Ericsson, Finland’s Nokia , and South Korean Samsung. Vodafone Idea (Vi), too, is expected to soon commence its commercial 5G rollout with the European vendors. BSNL’s 4G roll-out has been progressing at a snail’s pace. Advt BSNL, in a written reply to the Committee, said that the major hurdle regarding its 4G expansion is because the technology may still take time to be tested and proven. Only four countries have their homegrown telecom stack. “Since indigenous 4G and 5G equipment are being used for the first time in BSNL’s network, stability and performance of the network in live environment with provision of all features at par with the private operators is a big challenge. The scale of testing and manufacturing involved is also humongous,” the telco has said in its written reply. The Committee, in turn, recommended BSNL adopt a multi-pronged strategy, including expediting the testing and stabilisation of indigenous 4G technology, and partnering with foreign technology companies. “BSNL should enhance collaboration with Indian technology developers and global experts to expedite the validation and refinement process...BSNL may explore partnerships with foreign technology providers for temporary integration which could help bridge the technology gap while the indigenous solutions reaches maturity,” it said in the report. The Committee further suggested BSNL “reassess investment strategies” in 5G technology with a clear focus on use cases and potential return on investment before substantial expenditure. On being asked about the difference in terms of share of connections between BSNL and private telcos, the public sector told the Committee that Jio has invested Rs 4 lakh crore in the last five years while BSNL has only invested Rs 8,000 crore which is a huge difference. The Centre, to date, has provided fiscal support amounting to over Rs 2 lakh crore to BSNL and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL) to enable the companies to compete effectively in the market, generate revenue on the back of bolstered telecom services, and reduce debt. The Committee said in the report that BSNL must now focus on “reducing its reliance on government aid, and there is a need to enhance its operational efficiency, explore new revenue streams, and strategically invest in infrastructure and technology to ensure long-term sustainability”. Denver Public Schools Board of Education member Scott Esserman kicked off the board’s work session earlier this month with the remarks. He said he felt it was important for the district to reaffirm its support for all students, specifically pointing to “undocumented students” and “immigrant students.” “We as a board, before I was on it, since we’ve been on it have been committed to the safety and security of those students and will continue to do so,” Esserman said. Esserman promised the community the Denver school board will pass a new policy if it feels doing so would protect students and families living in the U.S. illegally. “But we need to let you know, if you are a student who is undocumented or a family who is undocumented, we will take care of you,” he said. “That’s our responsibility, we’re here to do that and I think it’s important that you hear that.” The sentiments came ahead of President-elect Donald Trump naming former Acting Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Director Tom Homan as the “border czar” of his incoming administration. Since being selected, Homan has taken a strict stance on illegal immigration, including threatening to send more ICE agents to sanctuary cities to remove migrants residing there illegally. Trump also confirmed in a Truth Social post last week his new administration will declare a national state of emergency over illegal immigration and “use military assets” to carry out a mass deportation program. Just days later, Denver Mayor Mike Johnston told news organization Denverite his city will not cooperate with certain proposals of the incoming administration, such as allowing local police to assist with illegal immigration. School board members nationwide this month have taken stances similar to Esserman’s. Sarah Lentz, the chair of the Portland Public Schools Board of Education in Maine, outlined last week how her district can resist deportation efforts. Lentz said immigrant families in her community have “come under attack” ahead of the transition of White House administrations. She reminded the community of a 2017 school board resolution ensuring that, unless required by a court order, Portland Public Schools will not use district resources “for the purpose of detecting or assisting in the apprehension” of individuals whose “only violation of law” is residing in the U.S. illegally. “Just a reminder that there are no current plans for mass deportation or other action, but we’re doing everything that we can to be prepared should this become the case,” Lentz said. The Chicago Board of Education earlier this month also approved a resolution asserting that Chicago Public Schools will not “provide assistance” to ICE officials “in the enforcement of federal civil immigration law.” The resolution says ICE agents will not be permitted access to district facilities or personnel “except in the rare instances in which [Chicago Public Schools] is provided with a criminal warrant.”

Truly, this is a movie dependent on managed expectations and a forgiving attitude toward its tendency to overserve. More of a thrash-and-burn schlock epic than the comparatively restrained 2000 “Gladiator,” also directed by Ridley Scott, the new one recycles a fair bit of the old one’s narrative cries for freedom while tossing in some digital sharks for the flooded Colosseum and a bout of deadly sea-battle theatrics. They really did flood the Colosseum in those days, though no historical evidence suggests shark deployment, real or digital. On the other hand (checks notes), “Gladiator II” is fiction. Screenwriter David Scarpa picks things up 16 years after “Gladiator,” which gave us the noble death of the noble warrior Maximus, shortly after slaying the ignoble emperor and returning Rome to the control of the Senate. Our new hero, Lucius (Paul Mescal), has fled Rome for Numidia, on the North African coast. The time is 200 A.D., and for the corrupt, party-time twins running the empire (Joseph Quinn and Fred Hechinger), that means invasion time. Pedro Pascal takes the role of Acacius, the deeply conflicted general, sick of war and tired of taking orders from a pair of depraved ferrets. The new film winds around the old one this way: Acacius is married to Lucilla (Connie Nielsen, in a welcome return), daughter of the now-deceased emperor Aurelius and the love of the late Maximus’s life. Enslaved and dragged to Rome to gladiate, the widower Lucius vows revenge on the general whose armies killed his wife. But there are things this angry young phenom must learn, about his ancestry and his destiny. It’s the movie’s worst-kept secret, but there’s a reason he keeps seeing footage of Russell Crowe from the first movie in his fever dreams. Battle follows battle, on the field, in the arena, in the nearest river, wherever, and usually with endless splurches of computer-generated blood. “Gladiator II” essentially bumper-cars its way through the mayhem, pausing for long periods of expository scheming about overthrowing the current regime. The prince of all fixers, a wily operative with interests in both managing gladiators and stocking munitions, goes by the name Macrinus. He’s played by Denzel Washington, who at one point makes a full meal out of pronouncing the word “politics” like it’s a poisoned fig. Also, if you want a masterclass in letting your robes do a lot of your acting for you, watch what Washington does here. He’s more fun than the movie but you can’t have everything. The movie tries everything, all right, and twice. Ridley Scott marshals the chaotic action sequences well enough, though he’s undercut by frenetic cutting rhythms, with that now-familiar, slightly sped-up visual acceleration in frequent use. Mescal acquits himself well in his first big-budget commercial walloper of an assignment, confined though he is to a narrower range of seething resentments than Crowe’s in the first film. I left thinking about two things: the word “politics” as savored/spit out by Washington, and the innate paradox of how Scott, whose best work over the decades has been wonderful, delivers spectacle. The director and his lavishly talented design team built all the rough-hewn sets with actual tangible materials the massive budget allowed. They took care to find the right locations in Morocco and Malta. Yet when combined in post-production with scads of medium-grade digital effects work in crowd scenes and the like, never mind the sharks, the movie’s a somewhat frustrating amalgam. With an uneven script on top of it, the visual texture of “Gladiator II” grows increasingly less enveloping and atmospherically persuasive, not more. But I hung there, for some of the acting, for some of the callbacks, and for the many individual moments, or single shots, that could only have come from Ridley Scott. And in the end, yes, you too may be moderately entertained. Michael Phillips is a Tribune critic.For the second straight Major League Baseball offseason, a norm-shattering contract has been the talk of the winter, with Juan Soto agreeing with the New York Mets on a $765 million, 15-year deal that's the richest in baseball history. It comes almost exactly one year after the Los Angeles Dodgers forked out a princely sum of $700 million on a 10-year, heavily deferred deal for two-way Japanese superstar Shohei Ohtani. They are believed to be the two richest contracts in pro sports history. The way it's going, a contract approaching $1 billion doesn't seem out of the question. But several factors are working against it — at least in the near future. There's reason to believe the megadeals for Ohtani and Soto are unicorns in the baseball world. Both players are uniquely talented, surely, but both also had unusual circumstances propelling their value into the stratosphere. Ohtani is the greatest two-way player in baseball history, capable of improving any team on both sides of the ball. He's also the rare baseball player who has true international appeal. His every move ( like his unexpected marriage announcement ) is followed closely in his native Japan, adding another 125 million potential fans who buy merchandise, watch him play and help fill the Dodgers' coffers. Then there's Soto — a four-time All-Star and on-base machine who won a World Series with the Washington Nationals in 2019. The X-factor for him is he became a free agent at the prime age of 26, which is extremely hard to do under current MLB rules. Players have to be in the big leagues for six years before testing free agency. The precocious Soto debuted at 19 with the Nats, making him part of a rare group of players who reached the highest level of professional baseball as a teenager. That accelerated his free agency timeline. It's rare for players to debut that young, and rarer still for them to develop into stars and test the open market the first chance they get. Two recent examples are Manny Machado and Bryce Harper, who both reached free agency in 2019. Machado signed a free-agent record $300 million contract with San Diego, and Harper overtook him days later with a $330 million contract to join the Phillies. Most players debut in the big leagues from ages 22 to 26, which means free agency comes in their late 20s or early 30s. A typical example is Yankees slugger Aaron Judge, who is one of this generation's great players but didn't hit the market until he was 30. Judge played three seasons of college baseball for Fresno State before getting drafted by the Yankees in 2013 at age 21 — already two years older than Soto was when he made his MLB debut. It took a few years for the budding superstar to reach the majors, and he was 25 when he had his breakout season in 2018, smashing 52 homers to earn AL Rookie of the Year honors. By the time he reached free agency after the 2022 season, he had already passed age 30. It's a major factor that led to him signing a $360 million, nine-year deal with the Yankees, which seems downright reasonable these days after the Ohtani and Soto deals. Two major trends are colliding that will make it harder for guys like Soto to hit free agency in their mid 20s. First, MLB teams have been more likely in recent years to take college players early in the draft, betting on more experienced talents. Just 10 high school players were drafted among the top 30 picks in the 2024 draft. Second, teams are more eager to lock up young, premium talent on long-term deals very early in their careers, well before they hit free agency. Sometimes before they even reach the majors. Juan Soto's deal comes almost exactly one year after the Los Angeles Dodgers forked out a princely sum of $700 million on a 10-year, heavily deferred deal for two-way Japanese superstar Shohei Ohtani. Since Soto, just two players have debuted in MLB before their 20th birthday — Elvis Luciano and Junior Caminero. Luciano hasn't been back to the majors since his 2019 cup of coffee. Caminero is now 21 and has only played in 50 big league games. Among those that debuted at 20: Fernando Tatis Jr. signed a $340 million, 14-year deal with San Diego in 2021, years before reaching the open market. Milwaukee's Jackson Chourio got an $82 million, eight-year deal before even reaching the big leagues. Young stars Corbin Carroll ($111 million, eight years with Arizona), Bobby Witt Jr. ($288 million, 11 years with Kansas City) and Julio Rodriguez ($209.3 million, 12 years with Seattle) also got massive guarantees early in their 20s to forgo an early free agency. The exception and wild card: Blue Jays slugger Vladimir Guerrero Jr. will be a 26-year-old free agent next offseason. Guerrero hasn't been as consistent in his young career as Soto, but a standout 2025 season could position him to threaten Soto's deal. More likely is that the player to pass Soto isn't in the majors yet — and might not even be in pro baseball. When 25-year-old Alex Rodriguez signed his record $252 million, 10-year deal with Texas in 2001, it took over a decade for another player to match that total, when Albert Pujols got $240 million over 10 years from the Angels in 2012. For many players, passing up life-changing money in their early or mid 20s is too enticing, even if it means that they might not maximize their value on the free agent market later in their careers. Soto was determined to test the market. He famously turned down a $440 million, 15-year offer to stay with the Washington Nationals in 2022, betting that he could make even more as a free agent. Not many players would turn down that kind of cash. Then again, that's what makes Soto so unique. And it's also why his $765 million deal could be the industry standard for some time. That means they won't be back on Earth until spring — 10 months after rocketing into orbit on Boeing's Starliner capsule. NASA announced the latest delay in Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams' homecoming Tuesday. The two test pilots planned to be away just a week or so when they blasted off June 5 on Boeing's first astronaut flight to the International Space Station. Their mission grew from eight days to eight months after NASA decided to send the company's problem-plagued Starliner capsule back empty in September.
