He believes small parties need to be strategic, and the Social Democrats can position themselves as authoritatively on universal access to healthcare as his namesake has managed to do on housing. He adds that he believes Sláintecare would be “transformative” not only for healthcare but for citizens’ relationship with society and the state in Ireland. “I’ve seen a one-tier health system in Sweden, when I lived there. I didn’t need health insurance, and a trip to the doctor was a tenner,” the Soc Dems’ Ó Broin says. “It gives everybody a sense that they’re getting something back. They don’t have this unfortunate bitterness which exists [among] those who are above thresholds.” He believes the Irish system of means-tested thresholds for medical cards is a “Victorian charity” approach, whereas universal access would be “a game changer we need in Ireland for people to feel that we’re all in this together.” The Soc Dems’ Ó Broin completed a PhD in energy systems modelling in Sweden, before undertaking postdoctoral research in France. With his background in environmental science, he was a member of the Green movement when he lived in Sweden, but he believes the Green Party do not sufficiently prioritise housing and workers’ rights. However at another house (also voting Sinn Féin) he criticises the government for not consulting with the local community on a nearby accommodation centre for people seeking international protection. He tells a couple who say they’re concerned about the safety of women in the area that “a lot of concerns that you have, which are genuine concerns, can be addressed” through immigration being “properly managed”. “It’s the fear of not knowing what’s going on in your own community, and that’s why, for me, community engagement and consultation is key, right? People are gonna come, right? You can’t stop people coming, but what you have to make sure is when people arrive to claim international protection, there’s a proper process,” Ó Broin tells them. It is understood there have not been any incidents affecting the safety of local residents involving residents of this accommodation centre. Sinn Féin’s immigration manifesto, launched last week, promises to take the provision of accommodation for international protection applicants into complete state control, and pledges that new purpose built centres will not be located in deprived communities. Sinn Féin’s Ó Broin explains that to protect “community cohesion”, good quality accommodation has to provided in communities that “have capacity”, not in those that have been marginalised, and which are struggling already with a lack of basic infrastructure. He says these areas are identifiable using the produced by Pobal, the state’s social inclusion agency. By that metric, would areas in this constituency be suitable for new centres – in, say, Lucan, much of which is classified as “affluent” or “very affluent” by Pobal? Ó Broin seems to accept this could indeed by the case, telling that “the definition of ‘deprived’ is objective, and it has to be”, and adding that “large parts of Dublin city” would be deemed suitable for new centres under Sinn Féin’s plan. He acknowledges that on healthcare and childcare the two parties’ policies “chime”, but claims Sinn Féin’s housing and other policies are more comprehensive. The apparent lack of transparency about the situation has fueled conspiracy theories and raised national security concerns that a foreign entity may be behind the mysterious sightings. The government’s dismissal of witness reports is also irking residents who believe the government's answers are insufficient. Some have threatened to take matters into their own hands and shoot them down. "Every time someone comes out of the top secret briefing, we get the same answer," Bramnick said. "’Well, we need more information,’ but apparently it's not a threat. Now, I don't know how they're determining that. The Defense Department must be speaking to someone because they're surely not speaking to any of the residents in New Jersey." He notes that the Garden State only has two state helicopters , and when one of those choppers was sent up to investigate a drone, its lights turned off and it fled. "Now, that's an indication that the drone is not here for a good purpose, otherwise I assume somebody operating the drone would tell the state police what they're doing. The Tampa Bay Rays will be playing a very grueling schedule in 2025, largely due to their enforced move from Tropicana Field. Major League Baseball announced a pair of changes to the Rays’ previously-announced regular season schedule for 2025 on Monday, via the Associated Press . The Rays will play a home series in Tampa against the Los Angeles Angels from Apr. 8-10 after originally being scheduled to play that series in California. As a result, the Angels-Rays series that had been scheduled to be played in Tampa from Aug. 4-6 will be moved to Anaheim on Aug. 5-7. The Rays’ two series against the Minnesota Twins will also be flipped. They will host the Twins in late May and then travel to Minnesota in early July. The league made the changes out of consideration for potential weather issues in Florida. Since the Rays will be playing outdoors at Steinbrenner Field, MLB sought to account for the summer rainy season in Florida by getting as many home games out of the way early in the year. The changes will have consequences for the Rays and their travel schedule. 47 of the team’s first 59 games will be at home, followed by a run of 69 of their final 103 games on the road. The Rays were left with no choice but to play outdoors after Hurricane Milton ripped apart the roof of Tropicana Field in October, knocking the venue out of commission until 2026 at the earliest. The Rays did not have to go far for a suitable stadium, but without the benefit of a roof, weather may be a big issue for them next season. Given these changes, one could argue it already is. On Sunday morning at approximately 6:30, a concerned witness called police after spotting the woman entering an unlocked vehicle in the area of Ailsa Place and Pond Mills Road. A description was provided, but the woman fled on foot before police could get there. Police say that the owner of the vehicle reported that his wallet had been stolen, and his credit card used at a nearby business. Video surveillance at the business captured the suspect entering the store and using the stolen credit card. According to police, the woman was located nearby, and upon being searched was found with the stolen property, and drugs. A 26-year-old now faces charges of possession of property obtained by crime under $5000, unauthorized use of credit card data, resist a peace officer and, possession of a schedule I substance. Notably, BJP already won 10 seats unopposed in the state as the opposition failed to field any contestant on all these 10 seats. Sikkim: The ruling Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) increased its tally to 31 seats in the Assembly elections 2024, up from 17 in 2019. In March, the BJP had called off its alliance with the SKM describing it as “corrupt”. On the other hand, the Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF), which ruled the state for 25 years in a row till 2019, won one seat. In 2019, the party had won 15. This follows the trend of the SDF’s decline from 2009 when it won all seats in the State. Since 2014, when SDF first contested in the elections, the party has unseated the SKM from the Assembly. The BJP contested in 31 assembly seats but failed to win a single one in Sikkim where it had 12 members in the outgoing House. The BJP could secure only 5.18 per cent of the votes in the Himalayan state. The saffron party decided to go alone in the Sikkim Assembly polls after severing its alliance with the Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) led by Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang after the seat-sharing talks broke down on the latter's reluctance to meet the BJP's demand for a respectable number of seats. Andhra Pradesh: It was a landslide victory in the Andhra Pradesh legislative assembly polls as the Chandrababu Naidu-led TDP-BJPJSP alliance routed the YSR Jagan Mohan Reddy regime, winning 165 out of 175 seats. The TDP alone cleared the majority mark with 136 seats, cementing former CM Naidu’s position as he makes his comeback after his party’s crushing defeat in the 2019 assembly polls, months after he was arrested under allegations of being involved in the Skill Development Corporation scam. In the polls, Patnaik's BJD was defeated by the Bharatiya Janata Party in the state elections, dethroning Patnaik after five terms in power. The BJP stormed to power in Odisha, ending the 24-year rule of the BJD, by winning 78 seats in the 147-member assembly. The Patnaik-led party, on the other hand, bagged 51 seats, while the Congress won 14 constituencies, the CPI (M) one. Three Independent nominees also emerged victorious. thE BJD failed to win any of the Lok Sabha seats in the state, with the BJP bagging 20 and the Congress one. Jammu and Kashmir: BJP won 29 seats in Jammu and Kashmir elections surpassing its previous highest tally of 25 seats in the 2014 election. As per Election Commission of India data, BJP secured 25.64 per cent vote share. After a decade, Jammu and Kashmir has elected its representatives for the legislative Assembly. The Union Territory’s people have given a historic mandate to the National Conference (NC)-Congress-CPI(M) alliance, with 49 of the 90 Assembly seats. The last time any party or pre-election bloc crossed the majority mark was in the 1996 Assembly election. Haryana: The BJP on Tuesday won a historic third consecutive term in Haryana after winning 48 of the 90 seats. The saffron party became the first to achieve a hattrick of wins in Haryana. Maharashtra: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has scripted a landslide victory in Maharashtra. It has won (leading) in over 130 seats on its own while the Mahayuti alliance got 225 seats - way more than the required halfway mark of 145. This was in stark contrast to BJP's big setback during the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. Just six months back, Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led BJP had an ambitious target of 400 plus seats. But the party failed terribly and the saffron party could not even cross the majority mark, winning only 240 seats in the Lok Sabha, down from 303 in 2019.
