NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. stock indexes are drifting lower Tuesday in the runup to the highlight of the week for the market, the latest update on inflation that’s coming on Wednesday. The S&P 500 dipped by 0.2% in late trading, a day after pulling back from its latest all-time high . The index is on track for its first back-to-back losses in more than three weeks, as momentum slows following a big rally that has it on track for one of its best years of the millennium . The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down by 7 points, or less than 0.1%, with roughly an hour remaining in trading, and the Nasdaq composite fell 0.3%. Tech titan Oracle dragged on the market and sank 7.8% after reporting growth for the latest quarter that fell just short of analysts’ expectations. It was one of the heaviest weights on the S&P 500, even though CEO Safra Catz said the company saw record demand related to artificial-intelligence technology for its cloud infrastructure business, which trains generative AI models. AI has been a big source of growth that’s helped many companies’ stock prices skyrocket. Elon Musk is hoping his ethically dubious generative AI tool , Grok, will help stem the continuing exodus from his social media site X. Musk has launched a free version of the AI chatbot Grok to X users without Premium accounts. Digital market intelligence company Similarweb estimates that the number of daily active users on X has dropped from 32.3 million to 29.6 million , an 8.4% decrease, since early October in the U.S. The exodus coincides with Musk’s takeover of the @America handle on Oct. 6 , in order to promote Donald Trump’s presidential run. The social media company has become a cesspool of right-wing hate and misinformation since Musk acquired it in October 2022 for $44 billion. It has shed around 80% of its value since Musk took over, and has continued to bleed users ever since . Numerous news organizations and journalists fled the site in November , in anticipation of dubious changes to X’s terms of service. At the same time, other social media spaces like Meta’s Threads and Bluesky have seen millions of new users flood their apps, and Musk is clearly feeling the deficit. Grok, which was launched in late November , and only available to premium subscribers at the time, was seen as a way for X to boost its piddling subscription sales. The free version allows users to ask Grok up to 10 questions every two hours and get several image analysis and generations per day. You can not use the chatbot without an X account. But Grok has serious downsides. Musk not only needs to stop the bleeding of X users, he needs to inflate his number of Grok users to compete in the AI space with more established companies like OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Meta’s AI assistant which boast hundreds of millions more users . To that end, Musk has allowed users to create and promulgate fake images on X using Grok , a violation of the company’s own rules against misinformation. Government spending on AI systems has increased greatly in recent years and Musk might also be feeling the need to create the appearance that his site and his generative AI are robust enough to be considered for government contracts. Contracts that he, as co-head of Trump’s Department of Government Efficiency agency, might have influence on . Trump seeks to have Georgia election case dismissed, citing presidential immunityBy Lucia Mutikani WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics' leadership was to blame for a series of missteps this year that put the agency under scrutiny, a report said on Tuesday, noting that its shortcomings included being insufficiently focused on economic data releases, communication with users and providing adequate training. But the report from a team of experts made up of government and private sector members said none of the incidents were related to the quality or accuracy of the agency's core data work. No dishonest or nefarious underlying motives had been found, the report added. Acting Labor Secretary Julie Su ordered an inquiry after three incidents, including the early release of a portion of the Consumer Price Index for April. "I want to emphasize that throughout their conversations with me, the team emphasized that overall, their investigation revealed a really excellent organization with a highly capable staff, deeply committed to their mission and their agency," BLS Commissioner Erika McEntarfer told reporters. "My first hope and expectation is that you will see a seamless data release process. We've already taken a number of steps to further mitigate risk." The BLS compiles economic reports such as the closely followed monthly employment report and consumer price data. In May, the BLS reported that a subset of files had been inadvertently loaded to its website approximately 30 minutes prior to the scheduled 8:30 a.m. ET release for April's CPI and Real Earnings data. McEntarfer said there was no noticeable movement in the U.S. Treasury market on the day some of the CPI data was released early. Months earlier, a BLS economist was reported to have been sharing undisclosed technical calculations underlying some of the data from the CPI series with private-sector economists who were dubbed super-users. "It was an idiosyncratically collected group of emails of people who had been asking him questions that he put together against policies and procedures that BLS outlined, so, yeah, it was limited to one person and ceased at the moment its attention was brought to the agency," McEntarfer said. In August, the release of the preliminary annual benchmark revision for the nonfarm payrolls report was delayed for more than 30 minutes after its scheduled 10 a.m. release time, but it still found its way onto social media platforms before the agency posted it. The investigation found that the agency's technology and software modernization had been hampered by underfunding and a lack of multi-year funding to enable it to ensure its processes and systems kept pace with technological advancements. USE OF CONTRACTORS The panel of investigators recommended among other things that the BLS re-imagine enterprise training for front-line staff, communicate earlier and more frequently with users about upcoming revisions to survey methodologies in a manner that is appropriate for both expert and more general users, and revise contingency planning to mitigate the risk of untimely releases. "BLS management mandated accountability at the supervisory and manager levels, and added standards for those two levels in performance management plans," said Jonathan Schwabish, a member of the committee that conducted the inquiry into the BLS' procedures and practices. Schwabish, who is a senior fellow at the Urban Institute, also said the BLS had removed contractors from critical roles and limited those functions to federal staff. "So prior to these incidents, certain releases either had input or help from federal contractors, and so BLS, after these incidents, removed the contractors from those roles." CLEVELAND (AP) — Shortly after doing a face-down snow angel, firing a few celebratory snowballs and singing “Jingle Bells” on his way to the media room, Jameis Winston ended his postgame news conference with a simple question. “Am I a Brown yet?” he asked. He is now. And who knows? Maybe for a lot longer than expected. Winston entered Cleveland football folklore on Thursday night by leading the Browns to a 24-19 win over the division rival Pittsburgh Steelers, who had their five-game winning streak stopped. Winston's performance at Huntington Bank Field, which transformed into the world's largest snow globe, not only made him an instantaneous hero in the eyes of Browns fans but added another wrinkle to the team's ever-changing, never-ending quarterback conundrum. In his fourth start since Deshaun Watson's season-ending Achilles tendon injury, Winston made enough big plays to help the Browns (3-8) get a victory that should quiet conjecture about coach Kevin Stefanski's job. Some wins mean more than others. In Cleveland, beating the Steelers is as big as it gets. But beyond any instant gratification, Winston has given the Browns more to consider as they move forward. Watson's future with Cleveland is highly uncertain since it will still be months before the team has a grip on whether he's even an option in 2025, his fourth year since signing a $230 million, fully guaranteed contract that has proven calamitous. It's also possible the Browns will cut ties with Watson. They signed Winston to a one-year contract to be Watson's backup. Manhattan police have obtained a warrant for the arrest of 26-year-old Luigi Nicholas Mangione , suspect in the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson . Mangione was arrested at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania, while carrying a gun, mask and writings linking him to the ambush. Mangione is being held without bail in Pennsylvania on charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm, forgery and providing false identification to police. Late Monday, Manhattan prosecutors charged him with five counts, including murder, criminal possession of a weapon and criminal possession of a forged instrument. A felony warrant filed in New York cites Altoona Officer Christy Wasser as saying she found the writings along with a semi-automatic pistol and an apparent silencer. But the report from a team of experts made up of government and private sector members said none of the incidents were related to the quality or accuracy of the agency's core data work. No dishonest or nefarious underlying motives had been found, the report added. Acting Labor Secretary Julie Su ordered an inquiry after three incidents, including the early release of a portion of the Consumer Price Index for April. "I want to emphasize that throughout their conversations with me, the team emphasized that overall, their investigation revealed a really excellent organization with a highly capable staff, deeply committed to their mission and their agency," BLS Commissioner Erika McEntarfer told reporters. "My first hope and expectation is that you will see a seamless data release process. We've already taken a number of steps to further mitigate risk." The BLS compiles economic reports such as the closely followed monthly employment report and consumer price data. In May, the BLS reported that a subset of files had been inadvertently loaded to its website approximately 30 minutes prior to the scheduled 8:30 a.m. ET release for April's CPI and Real Earnings data. McEntarfer said there was no noticeable movement in the U.S. Treasury market on the day some of the CPI data was released early. Months earlier, a BLS economist was reported to have been sharing undisclosed technical calculations underlying some of the data from the CPI series with private-sector economists who were dubbed super-users. "It was an idiosyncratically collected group of emails of people who had been asking him questions that he put together against policies and procedures that BLS outlined, so, yeah, it was limited to one person and ceased at the moment its attention was brought to the agency," McEntarfer said. In August, the release of the preliminary annual benchmark revision for the nonfarm payrolls report was delayed for more than 30 minutes after its scheduled 10 a.m. release time, but it still found its way onto social media platforms before the agency posted it. The investigation found that the agency's technology and software modernization had been hampered by underfunding and a lack of multi-year funding to enable it to ensure its processes and systems kept pace with technological advancements. USE OF CONTRACTORS The panel of investigators recommended among other things that the BLS re-imagine enterprise training for front-line staff, communicate earlier and more frequently with users about upcoming revisions to survey methodologies in a manner that is appropriate for both expert and more general users, and revise contingency planning to mitigate the risk of untimely releases. "BLS management mandated accountability at the supervisory and manager levels, and added standards for those two levels in performance management plans," said Jonathan Schwabish, a member of the committee that conducted the inquiry into the BLS' procedures and practices. Schwabish, who is a senior fellow at the Urban Institute, also said the BLS had removed contractors from critical roles and limited those functions to federal staff. "So prior to these incidents, certain releases either had input or help from federal contractors, and so BLS, after these incidents, removed the contractors from those roles."
