ATLANTA — The U.S. government’s premier research body has made an important discovery that could help create new drugs to lower “bad” cholesterol, and hopefully prevent heart attacks and stroke. But the interesting part of that story isn’t just the discovery itself, but the technology responsible for it: a relatively new type of microscope that essentially froze LDL cholesterol molecules, allowing researchers for the first time to get a detailed view of the structure of LDL and find new ways to approach stopping LDL buildup into body. The technology, cryo-electron microscopy, allowed National Institutes of Health scientists to view how LDL accumulates in the blood. The microscope’s inventors won the Nobel Prize in 2017, and the tech promises breakthroughs of all kinds in science. Research with this tool is going to have serious health benefits, the NIH said, because it allowed them for the first time to see how “bad” cholesterol, known as low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol or LDL-C, builds up in the body, and causes heart attacks and strokes in people who have genetically high LDL cholesterol. That condition is known as familial hypercholesterolemia. The genetic disorder causes LDL (bad) cholesterol levels to spike and remain elevated. The condition begins at birth and can cause heart attacks at an early age, according to the U.S. National Institutes of Health. The researchers hope the breakthrough will help scientists cure FH, which affects 1 in 250 Americans, and increases their likelihood of dying from coronary artery disease at a younger age. Presently, most people who have FH treat it by taking statins or other drugs. But until the NIH discovery in December, which allowed them to take a sort of freeze-frame photo of the molecule, the actual way in which LDL accumulated in the body wasn’t completely understood. The findings provide new insights that one day can lead to new types of drugs, said Dr. Alan Remaley , senior investigator in lipoprotein metabolism at the NIH. “Our findings provide a potential new strategy for increasing the ability of the LDL receptor for binding and removing LDL from the circulation,” Remaley explained. Dr. Aditi Das and Dr. MG Finn, both with Georgia Tech’s School of Chemistry and Biochemistry, explained in an email that the technology represents a revolution in biology and biochemistry because it allows scientists to determine the structures of biological molecules in great detail. How molecules function is determined by their structures. “When we know their structures, we have a big clue as to how they work, how to fix them if they are defective, or how to stop them if they cause harm. Nature is the supreme molecular architect, and we need techniques like cryo-EM to see the details of what she builds,” Finn explained. Why LDL is bad The breakthrough came when the NIH was able to preserve the LDL’s structure, creating a sort of freeze-frame that literally trapped LDL in a form of ice that allowed it to be seen by an electron microscope. The images were sent to a computer algorithm that then built a 3D model of the molecule. Cryo-electron machines cost between $2 million and $3 million per device, and have become essential tools for modern biological and biomedical research, Finn said. Atlanta has two of them: one at Georgia Tech , the other at Emory . The fact that LDL cholesterol contributes to cardiovascular disease has been known for some time, but until the NIH finding, researchers couldn’t quite observe the process. LDL causes fatty deposits, known as plaque, to build up in the walls of arteries, which is a major cause of heart disease. LDL’s purpose isn’t entirely harmful: it’s job is to transport cholesterol to cells for energy, repair or hormone production. But excess LDL is harmful, and the liver produces too much LDL when we eat unhealthy fats (like saturated and trans fats), which contributes to cardiovascular risk. Excess LDL in the bloodstream can get stuck in the arteries, triggering inflammation and narrowing the blood vessels. Over time, this plaque buildup can reduce blood flow or rupture, forming clots that block blood supply to the heart or brain, leading to heart attacks or strokes. Saturated fats are found naturally in animal products (like butter, cheese, fatty meats) and some tropical oils (like coconut and palm oils). Overeating foods high in saturated fat can raise LDL cholesterol. Trans fats are found in margarine, shortening, baked goods and fried foods. They raise LDL cholesterol significantly while lowering HDL (good) cholesterol, making them much more harmful, according to the American Heart Association. For heart health, it’s best to replace these fats with unsaturated options like those found in fish, nuts, seeds, avocados and plant-based oils, said Dr. Danny J. Eapen, of the Cardiac Rehabilitation Center at Emory St. Joseph’s Hospital and Emory University School of Medicine. NEW ORLEANS (AP) — New Orleans tight end Taysom Hill is likely to miss the rest of the season after injuring his knee in the Saints' loss to the Los Angeles Rams. “It looks like an ACL tear,” interim coach Darren Rizzi said Monday. “He’ll probably get a second opinion, but it looks like it will be season-ending.” Hill, who is listed at tight end but plays a variety of roles, was carted off the field after taking a hard hit to his left knee while converting a fourth down on a direct snap in the Saints’ 21-14 loss Sunday to the Rams. Upton died Wednesday at a hospital in Los Gatos, California, after suffering a bout of pneumonia, said Kathleen Farley, the California state chair of the Sons and Daughters of Pearl Harbor Survivors. Israeli troops forcibly remove staff and patients from northern Gaza hospital, officials say DEIR AL-BALAH, Gaza Strip (AP) — Israeli troops stormed one of the last hospitals operating in northern Gaza on Friday, forcing many staff and patients outside to strip in winter weather, the territory’s health ministry said. The army denied claims it had entered or set fire to the complex and accused Hamas of using the facility for cover. Kamal Adwan Hospital has been hit multiple times over the past three months by Israeli troops waging an offensive against Hamas fighters in surrounding neighborhoods, according to staff. Court rules Georgia lawmakers can subpoena Fani Willis for information related to her Trump case ATLANTA (AP) — A judge has ruled that the Georgia state Senate can subpoena Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis as part of a inquiry into whether she has engaged in misconduct during her prosecution of President-elect Donald Trump but is giving Willis the chance to contest whether lawmakers' demands are overly broad. Fulton County Superior Court Judge Shukura Ingram filed the order Monday, telling Willis she has until Jan. 13 to submit arguments over whether the subpoenas seek legally shielded or confidential information. Ingram wrote that the would issue a final order later saying what Willis had to respond to. Willis, though, wants the ruling overturned. “We believe the ruling is wrong and will appeal,” former Georgia Gov. The Georgia Court of Appeals panel said in a 2-1 ruling that because of the romantic relationship Willis had with special prosecutor Nathan Wade “this is the rare case in which disqualification is mandated and no other remedy will suffice to restore public confidence in the integrity of these proceedings.” US homelessness up 18% as affordable housing remains out of reach for many people The United States saw an 18.1% increase in homelessness this year, a dramatic rise driven mostly by a lack of affordable housing as well as devastating natural disasters and a surge of migrants in several parts of the country, federal officials said Friday. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development said federally required tallies taken across the country in January found that more than 770,000 people were counted as homeless — a number that misses some people and does not include those staying with friends or family because they do not have a place of their own. That increase comes on top of a 12% increase in 2023, which HUD blamed on soaring rents and the end of pandemic assistance. The 2023 increase also was driven by people experiencing homelessness for the first time. The numbers overall represent 23 of every 10,000 people in the U.S., with Black people being overrepresented among the homeless population. “No American should face homelessness, and the Biden-Harris Administration is committed to ensuring every family has access to the affordable, safe, and quality housing they deserve,” HUD Agency Head Adrianne Todman said in a statement, adding that the focus should remain on “evidence-based efforts to prevent and end homelessness.” Among the most concerning trends was a nearly 40% rise in family homelessness — one of the areas that was most affected by the arrival of migrants in big cities. Earlier this year, New Hampshire voters experienced this firsthand when a deepfake mimicking President Joe Biden’s voice urged them to skip the polls ahead of the primary. The deepfake likely needed only several seconds of the president's voice to create the clone. According to multiple AI voice cloning models, about 10 seconds of an actual voice is all that is needed to recreate it. And that can easily come from a phone call or a video from social media. "A person's voice is really probably not that information-dense. It's not as unique as you may think," James Betker, a technical staff member at OpenAI, told Scripps News. Betker developed TortoiseTTS, an open-source voice cloning model. "It's actually very easy to model, very easy to learn, the distribution of all human voices from a fairly small amount of data," Betker added. How AI voice cloning works AI models have been trained on vast amounts of data, learning to recognize human speech. Programs analyze the data and train repeatedly, learning characteristics such as rhythm, stress, pitch and tone. "It can look at 10 seconds of someone speaking and it has stored enough information about how humans speak with that kind of prosody and pitch. Enough information about how people speak with their processing pitch and its weights that it can just continue on," Betker said. Imagine a trained AI model as a teacher, and the person cloning the voice to be a student. When a student asks to create a cloned voice, it starts off as white noise. The teacher scores how close the student is to sounding correct. The student tries again and again based on these scores until the student produces something close to what the teacher wants. While this explanation is extremely simplified, the concept of generating a cloned voice is based on bit-by-bit, based on probability distributions. "I think, at its core, it's pretty simple," Betker said. "I think the analogy of just continuing with what you're given will take you pretty far here." There are currently some AI models that claim to only need two seconds of samples. Connor Kasin was a 12th grade student at Massapequa High School, Fox News reported on Sunday. The outlet noted that first responders were called to the scene when the incident occurred. When the young man collapsed, several people at the game performed CPR until first responders arrived to take over: In a letter to faculty and students, the school said, “It is heartbreaking to report that Connor did not survive. His passing is devastating to the Massapequa community, and we offer our deepest condolences to Connor’s family and friends.” Kasin apparently lost consciousness between periods of the game at the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center in Bethpage, Long Island, per SILive.com: Kasin was rushed to the hospital as well before it was announced he had passed away. Greg Gumbel, a longtime CBS sportscaster who broke barriers during his career calling some of the biggest sporting events, has died from cancer, according to a statement from family released by the news network on Friday. “He leaves behind a legacy of love, inspiration and dedication to over 50 extraordinary years in the sports broadcast industry; and his iconic voice will never be forgotten,” his wife Marcy Gumbel and daughter Michelle Gumbel said in a statement. In March, Gumbel missed his first NCAA Tournament since 1997 due to what he said at the time were family health issues. Gumbel was the studio host for CBS since returning to the network from NBC in 1998. Gumbel signed an extension with CBS last year that allowed him to continue hosting college basketball while stepping back from NFL announcing duties. In 2001, he announced Super Bowl 35 for CBS, becoming the first Black announcer in the U.S. to call play-by-play of a major sports championship. David Berson, president and CEO of CBS Sports, described Gumbel as someone who broke barriers and set standards for others during his years as a voice for fans in sports, including in the NFL and March Madness. “A tremendous broadcaster and gifted storyteller, Greg led one of the most remarkable and groundbreaking sports broadcasting careers of all time,” Berson said. Gumbel had two stints at CBS, leaving the network for NBC when it lost football in 1994 and returning when it regained the contract in 1998. He hosted CBS’ coverage of the 1992 and 1994 Winter Olympics and called Major League Baseball games during its four-year run broadcasting the national pastime. In 1995, he hosted the World Figure Skating Championships and the following year hosted NBC’s daytime coverage of the Olympic Summer Games in Atlanta. But it was football and basketball where he was best known and made his biggest impact. Gumbel hosted CBS’ NFL studio show, “The NFL Today” from 1990 to 1993 and again in 2004-05. Earlier this year, Gumbel recalled replacing Brent Musburger as host of “The NFL Today” in 1990, describing it as intimidating and daunting. “The fact that I got to sit in the same chair and do the same thing or try to do the same thing that he did was an incredible honor,” he said. Gumbel also called NFL games as the network’s lead play-by-play announcer from 1998 to 2003, including Super Bowl 35 and 38. He returned to the NFL booth in 2005, leaving that role after the 2022 season. “Like all who knew and loved him, I too am saddened by his death, yet also so very grateful to have known him in my life,” Clark Kellogg, a CBS Sports college basketball game and studio analyst, said in a statement. “What a gift to be touched by such a good man and partner.” Gumbel was the older brother of Bryant Gumbel, the host of NBC’s “Today” show and “Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel” on HBO. Bryant Gumbel received a lifetime achievement award at the Sports Emmys in 2003. Greg Gumbel grew up in Chicago and graduated from Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa, in 1967 with a degree in English. He had plans to become an English teacher, but after his brother got into sportscasting, he auditioned at WMAQ-TV, an NBC affiliate in Chicago in 1973, according to the book “You Are Looking Live!: How The NFL Today Revolutionized Sports Broadcasting.” He was soon offered a position as weekend sports anchor. “I’m kind of surprised I got the job. I certainly wasn’t anyone who was polished,” he said in the book. “By my own reckoning, it took me a good year to start to feel comfortable in front of a camera.” Gumbel also worked for ESPN and the Madison Square Garden network. James Brown, who currently hosts “The NFL Today,” described Gumbel on Friday as “Mr. Versatility and also very telegenic.” “It was my pleasure to call him a friend and one who could do anything that was given to him in the wake of an assignment,” he added. Gumbel won local Emmy Awards during his long career and was the recipient of the 2007 Pat Summerall Award for excellence in sports broadcasting. Outside of his career as a sportscaster, he was affiliated with the March of Dimes for three decades, including as a member of its board of trustees.
