The FDA approved acellular tissue engineered vessel-tyod (Symvess, Atev; Humacyte Inc) for use in adults as a vascular conduit for extremity arterial injury when urgent revascularization is needed to avoid imminent limb loss and when autologous vein graft is not feasible. The approval follows positive results from the pivotal phase 2/3 V005 (NCT03005418) clinical trial. Image credit: JHVEPhoto | stock.adobe.com Humacyte Human Acellular Vessel (HAV) in Patients With Vascular Trauma NCT03005418 Humacyte, Inc. September 1, 2027 Symvess is a first-in-class bioengineered human tissue that is designed to be a universally implantable vascular conduit for use in arterial replacement and repair. Because harvesting vein from a trauma patient can take time during surgery, Symvess is available off-the-shelf, which does not require potential further injury to the patient to obtain vascular repair material via an invasive surgery. The Symvess trauma program was granted regenerative medicine advanced therapy designation by the FDA in May 2023, and in February 2024, it received a priority review. “The approval of a vascular conduit that resists infection and remodels into native arteries is an extraordinary technological advancement that will have a huge impact on the quality of trauma care around the world,” Charles J. Fox, MD, FACS, director of Vascular Surgery at the University of Maryland Capital Region, said in a news release. “Symvess is perfectly sized to treat most injuries, has excellent handling properties, and reduces time necessary to save both life and limbs.” The V005 (NCT03005418) trial, also called CLN-PRO-V005, is a prospective, multicenter, multi-cohort, non-randomized phase 2/3 study which enrolled patients with life- or limb-threatening vascular trauma which requires surgical repair. A limb cohort includes patients who require repair of a vessel contained to the upper or lower extremity, and a torso cohort includes patients who require repair of vessels within the thorax (excluding the heart), abdomen, and retroperitoneum. No control arms are included in this study. All patients received the investigational Symvess, which were used for arterial bypass or reconstruction. The device is implanted using a standard vascular surgical technique, similar to those used to place predicate peripheral vascular prostheses. The primary outcome measures are primary patency (defined as the interval from the time of access placement until any intervention designed to maintain or reestablish patency, access thrombosis or the measurement of patency), which was assessed at 30 days, and frequency and severity of adverse events (AEs), which was assessed at 36 months. A total of 69 patients with a mean age of 33.5 years were enrolled in the trial, of which the majority were male (n = 38). At day 30, the primary patency was approximately 84.3% (95% CI, 72.0%-91.8%) and secondary patency was 90.2% (95% CI, 79.0%-95.7%). Additionally, amputation rate was about 9.8% (95% CI, 4.3%-21.0%). Infection and death rates were also low, occurring in about 2.0% (95% CI, 0.4%-10.3%) and 5.9% (95% CI, 2.0%-15.9%) of patients, respectively. “I believe that Symvess will revolutionize vascular trauma care and be profoundly beneficial to our patients,” Rishi Kundi, MD, surgical critical care of vascular surgery at the University of Maryland Medical System, said in the news release. “From my experience so far, Symvess will allow reconstructions that are currently impracticable because of contamination and infection. It will make reconstructions that we now perform with prosthetic or even biologic grafts more successful.” Overall, AEs and serious AEs were frequent in V005 consistent with patients with acute injuries. According to the investigators, AEs of special interest, including thrombosis, rupture, aneurysm, and pseudoaneurysm, occurred at acceptable rates that were consistent with reports of other vascular conduits, including autologous vein and synthetic grafts. At 30 days, AEs of interest were reported for 8 patients and included thromboses and occlusions (resolved or unresolved), nonspontaneous rupture (n = 1), and infection of the conduit (n = 1). Additionally, all enrolled patients receiving Symvess presented multiple risk factors that could lead to wound infection, of which 20 patients developed 1 or more infectious events by day 30 (eg, bacteremia, fungemia, sepsis, and osteomyelitis). “The FDA approval of Symvess will make it the preferred conduit for complex vascular injuries, and particularly those at risk for infection,” Ernest E. Moore, MD, FACS, director of Research at the Ernest E. Moore Shock Trauma Center at Denver Health, said in the news release.

Forest head coach Nuno Espirito Santo said the midfielder is still struggling with the foot injury he sustained against Crystal Palace last month. Anderson, 22, started the subsequent game against Leicester City and came off the bench in the last two Forest fixtures, against West Ham United and Newcastle United . Advertisement “We took advantage of the international break to try to manage some players who were struggling, and Elliot was one of them. Let’s see how he is tomorrow. But for now, we still have to assess him,” said Nuno at his pre-match press conference earlier on Thursday. The Portuguese coach said that, otherwise, Forest’s international players had all — with the exception of Paraguay international Ramon Sosa , who was yet to fly back to England — arrived back in Nottingham without injury issues. But both Murillo and Chris Wood will be given more rest ahead of the weekend, having travelled half way around the world to join up with Brazil and New Zealand. Murillo did not get any game time as Brazil drew 1-1 both in Venezuela and at home to Uruguay. But Wood scored twice in an 8-1 win over Vanuatu and a hat-trick as New Zealand won in Samoa. Nuno says the training levels of all the international players — and particularly Murillo and Wood — will be monitored to ensure they get as much rest as possible ahead of the weekend. “We will give them more time to rest. This is what we believe is better. We will not immediately try to prepare them. We will have players with jetlag and we have to manage that. Our approach is always that doing less is more,” said Nuno. (Mike Egerton/PA Images via Getty Images)
The Balatro Takeover Has Only Just BegunPress freedom advocates are urgin Apple to ditch an "immature" generative AI system that incorrectly summarized a BBC news notification that incorrectly related that suspected UnitedHealthcare CEO shooter Luigi Mangione had killed himself. Reporters Without Borders (RSF) said this week that Apple's AI kerfuffle, which generated a false summary as "Luigi Mangione shoots himself," is further evidence that artificial intelligence cannot reliably produce information for the public. Apple Intelligence, which launched in the UK on December 11, needed less than 48 hours to make the very public mistake. "This accident highlights the inability of AI systems to systematically publish quality information, even when it is based on journalistic sources," RSF said. "The probabilistic way in which AI systems operate automatically disqualifies them as a reliable technology for news media that can be used in solutions aimed at the general public." Because it isn't reliably accurate, RSF said AI shouldn't be allowed to be used for such purposes, and asked Apple to pull the feature from its operating systems. "Facts can't be decided by a roll of the dice," said Vincent Berthier, head of RSF's tech and journalism desk. "RSF calls on Apple to act responsibly by removing this feature. "The automated production of false information attributed to a media outlet is a blow to the outlet's credibility and a danger to the public's right to reliable information on current affairs," Berthier added. It's unknown if or how Apple plans to address the issue. The BBC has filed its own complaint, but Apple declined to comment to the British broadcaster publicly on the matter. According to the BBC, this doesn't even appear to be the first time Apple's AI summaries have falsely reported news. The beeb pointed to an Apple AI summary from November shared by a ProPublica reporter that attributed news of Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu's arrest (which hasn't happened) to the New York Times, suggesting Apple Intelligence might be a serial misreader of the daily headlines. Google's AI search results have also been tricked into surfacing scam links , and have also urged users to glue cheese to pizza and eat rocks . Berthier stated, "The European AI Act - despite being the most advanced legislation in the world in this area - did not classify information-generating AIs as high-risk systems, leaving a critical legal vacuum. This gap must be filled immediately." The Register has reached out to Apple to learn about what it might do to address the problem of its AI jumping to conclusions about the news, and RSF to see if it's heard from Apple, but we haven't heard back from either. ®LOS ANGELES — Doctors are stumped about what is plaguing Brandi Glanville. In a Tuesday interview with ET, the "Real Housewives of Beverly Hills" alum said the face-altering condition she has been investigating for the past year feels like something "s–ing or having babies in my face." Glanville said the mystery ailment has left her with recurring facial swelling, speech problems, missing teeth and a reluctance to go out in public. "I've been on meds this whole year. I don't socialize. I don't go out," Glanville told ET, estimating that her total medical costs — including medications, doctor visits, MRIs, X-rays, and CT scans — have surpassed $70,000. She said that at one point, she was on IV antibiotics that helped her facial swelling but were too expensive to maintain. The "Brandi Glanville Unfiltered" host added that she's consulted "every doctor under the sun," from immunologists to rheumatologists to infectious disease doctors. While none have supplied a definitive explanation, some have suggested her issues could stem from a "new parasite." Glanville told ET she could have contracted the parasite while filming in Morocco for "The Real Housewives Ultimate Girls Trip" in January 2023. On set, she said, "We had food sitting out for hours on end, and some of it was meat." Glanville's face swelling and speech struggles began six months later, she said, "and we're still here, trying to figure it out." Bravo did not reply immediately Thursday to The Times' request for comment. The "Real Housewives Ultimate Girls Trip" in question, which would have been the spinoff series' fourth, never aired. While Bravo did not confirm why they axed the season, People reported at the time of filming that cast members Glanville and Caroline Manzo left the set early after an alleged incident. Manzo later filed a lawsuit accusing Glanville of harassment during last year's filming, according to court documents reviewed by The Times. Glanville said that her medical issues, combined with the lawsuit from Manzo, have prevented her from taking on new work in recent years. "Generally, I'm the first call [for Bravo gigs]," she said. "But now I have, like, a scarlet letter and the medical stuff so even if I could go to work, my face would be doing gymnastics." Medical interventions have been noninvasive so far, Glanville said, but surgery could be next. The reality star joked that contrary to popular belief, she has not yet had plastic surgery on her face. "I can't afford it if I wanted it," she said. ©2024 Los Angeles Times. Visit latimes.com . Distributed by Tribune Content Agency, LLC.
Potential TikTok bidder seeks a CEO, prepares business overhaulBEAVERTON, Ore.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec 20, 2024-- After gaining momentum throughout the year, last month spot truckload freight volumes retreated to their lowest point since January, said DAT Freight & Analytics, which operates the DAT One freight marketplace and DAT iQ data analytics service. This press release features multimedia. View the full release here: https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20241220897542/en/ DAT: November truckload volumes lagged robust October (Photo: DAT Freight & Analytics) The DAT Truckload Volume Index (TVI) declined for all three equipment categories compared to October: Van TVI: 246, down 18% Refrigerated TVI: 204, down 11% Flatbed TVI: 242, down 23% The TVI was higher year over year only for reefer freight, up 7% compared to November 2023. The van and flatbed TVI were down 1% and 5%, respectively. “Shippers moved so much freight into the U.S. earlier this year, ahead of potential tariffs and port strikes, that we didn’t see the volumes we might expect in November,” said Ken Adamo, DAT Chief of Analytics. “The exception was reefer freight. The late Thanksgiving gave grocers a few extra shipping days for fresh and frozen goods.” Spot reefer rate strengthened ahead of the holiday The national average spot rate for reefer freight increased 6 cents to $2.45 a mile, the most since January. The van rate was unchanged at $2.02 and the flatbed rate fell 5 cents to $2.37. The van linehaul rate averaged $1.64 a mile, up 1 cent compared to October. The reefer rate was $2.04, up 7 cents, and the flatbed rate slipped 3 cents to $1.93. Rates are about 5% higher year over year. Contract rates dipped but show signs of strength National average contract rates were changed little last month: Contract van rate: $2.40 per mile, down 1 cents but 11 cents lower year over year Contract reefer rate: $2.74 a mile, unchanged and down 18 cents year over year Contract flatbed rate: $3.03 a mile, down 1 cent and 11 cents lower than last year At 0.3%, the DAT iQ New Rate Differential (NRD) for van freight was above zero for the third month in a row for the first time since Spring 2022. The NRD measures changes in the contract market by comparing rates entering the market to those exiting; a positive NRD signals a tightening market and higher rates for shippers. “The NRD suggests that truckload pricing for contract freight is moving higher,” Adamo said. “We don’t expect bold changes quickly, but all indications point to steady rate growth into the first half of 2025.” About the DAT Truckload Volume Index The DAT Truckload Volume Index reflects the change in the number of loads with a pickup date during that month. A baseline of 100 equals the number of loads moved in January 2015, as recorded in DAT RateView, a truckload pricing database and analysis tool with rates paid on an average of 3 million monthly loads. DAT benchmark spot rates are derived from invoice data for hauls of 250 miles or more with a pickup date during the month reported. Linehaul rates subtract an amount equal to an average fuel surcharge. About DAT Freight & Analytics DAT Freight & Analytics operates both the largest truckload freight marketplace and truckload freight data analytics service in North America. Shippers, transportation brokers, carriers, news organizations, and industry analysts rely on DAT for market trends and data insights based on more than 400 million annual freight matches, and a database of $150 billion in annual freight market transactions. Founded in 1978, DAT is a business unit of Roper Technologies (Nasdaq: ROP), a constituent of the Nasdaq 100, S&P 500, and Fortune 1000. DAT is headquartered in Beaverton, Ore. December 20, 2024 This article has been reviewed according to Science X's editorial process and policies . Editors have highlightedthe following attributes while ensuring the content's credibility: fact-checked peer-reviewed publication trusted source proofread by Suzi Morales, University of Texas at Austin In 2022, U.S. grocers wasted 5 million tons of food, with 35% of it going to landfills, according to the food waste nonprofit ReFed. More than half of that waste—2.7 million tons—was past the labels' expiration dates. But there's a potential technological solution to the waste problem, according to new research from Texas McCombs. By moving from paper shelf labels to digital ones, supermarkets can easily lower prices and move older stock from their shelves to consumers' homes. " Inventory Information Frictions Explain Price Rigidity in Perishable Groceries " is published in Marketing Science . Using technology to quickly change prices on labels, a process known as dynamic pricing , benefits more than just consumers, says Ioannis Stamatopoulos, associate professor of information, risk, and operations management. "Everyone is better off when dynamic pricing is enabled," he says. "There's less food waste and less emissions from food ending up in landfills." Grocers save time and money, too. They can change digital labels—also called electronic shelf labels—with a few keystrokes on a tablet, compared with printing physical labels and sticking them onto shelves. When it's easier and cheaper to update prices, Stamatopoulos says, grocers should do it more often. How much is more often? To find out, Stamatopoulos—with Naveed Chehrazi of Washington University in St. Louis and Robert Sanders of the University of California, San Diego—analyzed two unnamed European grocery chains as they installed the tags. One, in the United Kingdom, introduced digital labels for 940 perishable products. The labels displayed the base price and added discounts as products got closer to expiring. The researchers found the stores changed prices 54% more often. Raising the bar for barcodes The second supermarket chain, in the European Union, adopted electronic labels but added a second technology: expanded barcodes. Unlike a standard barcode, an expanded one can hold inventory details such as packaging dates, lot numbers, and expiration dates. When inventory nears its "sell-by" date, a store can lower prices to stimulate buying. After the EU stores installed the two technologies, the researchers found, they increased price change frequency 853%. Rapid price changes aid shoppers, says Stamatopoulos. "If you're a consumer who really, really cares about price, then you can buy the blueberries that will expire two days later and consume them today." By better managing inventories, the barcodes also boost stores' bottom lines, he adds. "Because the grocery store can put things on discount when they're about to expire, they can afford larger orders, so they take advantage of economies of scale in ordering." The price of dynamic pricing Although dynamic pricing has long-term benefits, it faces short-term obstacles. One is consumer fear that retailers will jack up prices when demand is high—as ride-hailing companies such as Uber do. In February, when the fast-food chain Wendy's announced it would roll out dynamic pricing, it drew backlash . It quickly clarified that it would cut prices during slow periods but not raise them during busy periods. Discover the latest in science, tech, and space with over 100,000 subscribers who rely on Phys.org for daily insights. Sign up for our free newsletter and get updates on breakthroughs, innovations, and research that matter— daily or weekly . But unlike restaurants, it's hard for grocers to pinpoint hours of high demand for individual products, Stamatopoulos notes. "For retailers to estimate demand very finely and dynamically respond accordingly, so as to squeeze every dollar out of it, I think that's kind of impossible," he says. Another barrier is cost. Grocers must invest in digital labels and tablets, while employees must update data daily for thousands of items. Europe is ahead of the U.S. on adopting these technologies, but that could be changing. In June, Walmart announced it will transition to digital price labels in 2,300 stores by 2026. Amazon Fresh and the Midwestern chain Schnuck's are also using them. To speed the transition, Stamatopoulos suggests government subsidies, like those for solar panels and electric vehicles. "Somebody needs to break this equilibrium," he says. "Then things will move to a new era where everybody's using the additional information." FedEx is taking steps to streamline its operations by prioritizing its DRIVE program and separating FedEx Freight into a standalone, publicly traded company. These decisions were announced by FedEx President and CEO Raj Subramaniam Thursday (Dec. 19) during the company’s second-quarter earnings call, which saw the company’s total sales of $22 billion slip 1%. Amid these challenges, Subramaniam highlighted the ongoing success of FedEx’s DRIVE program, which he said is critical to the company’s operational improvements. Originally conceived as a structural cost optimization initiative, DRIVE has grown into a broader strategy that fosters efficiency and enhances decision-making across the business. DRIVE: A Catalyst for Growth “I’ve talked about DRIVE as our structural cost optimization program,” Subramaniam said to analysts. “The reality is that within FedEx, DRIVE has evolved to be so much more. It’s a new data and technology driven business architecture that has changed how we work across our entire enterprise, introducing more rigor and accountability to every decision we make, leading to a continuous cycle of efficiency and optimization. ” DRIVE, he added, “has clearly evolved to be how we work in this company. We have established an overarching market-leading approach to overall governance that leads to disciplined execution. This is going to stand us in good stead as a foundation for FedEx to execute as we go forward. The second thing is we also adopted a data-first digital mindset in solving problems while creating differentiation in our service offerings. The underlying technological innovation and transformation that we have created is quite profound.” The challenges faced during the quarter, including a soft global industrial economy and competitive pricing pressures, were closely linked to the need for continuous improvements, particularly through DRIVE’s data-driven approach to cost management, according to Chief Financial Officer John Dietrich . “We remain confident in our ability to offset these headwinds with the $2.2 billion from incremental DRIVE savings,” Dietrich said. “This expectation further highlights how DRIVE is fundamentally changing the way we do business. We’re improving our cost structure to enable us to profitably grow with eCommerce and are well-positioned to see significant incremental margins on our priority services once global industrial production improves.” FedEx Freight’s Separation and Future Outlook During the earnings call, FedEx also announced its decision to fully separate FedEx Freight, creating two publicly traded companies. This move aims to unlock value for shareholders while allowing the two businesses to remain strategically aligned, Subramaniam said. Each company will be able to sharpen its focus and competitiveness, better executing its priorities while continuing to invest in growth and return capital to shareholders. Each company will benefit from enhanced focus and competitiveness, he added, allowing them to execute their strategic priorities and continue investing in profitable growth while returning capital to shareholders. “We’re excited to create a leading LTL [less than truckload] pure-play, the largest carrier by revenue with the broadest network and the fastest transit times,” Subramaniam said. “FedEx Freight has deep relationships with customers who turn to us for our reliability, simplicity and choice of services. Freight has maintained its leading market share position for a long time and increased operating profit nearly 25% on average per year over the last five years.” As a separate company, Freight will be better positioned to unlock its full value potential, Subramaniam added. “Areas where we see the greatest opportunity include: first, an expanded dedicated LTL sales force led by Tom Connolly, our new VP of LTL Sales, who has nearly 30 years of experience,” he said. “We’ve already begun to build out this team and we expect to add more than 300 LTL specialists by the time of separation. “Second, an enhanced LTL-specific pricing and invoicing system that drives faster speed to market, more intuitive contracts and is more tailored to this market,” he added. “Third, improved Freight and FedEx network efficiencies focused on accelerating speed, improving coverage, optimizing touches and lowering our cost to serve. “And four, an LTL-focused automation, which will drive efficiency and reduce outside vendor spend. FedEx Freight’s portfolio of solutions, which includes both priority and economy services, is also well-positioned to benefit from the long-term market dynamics shaping the LTL industry,” Subramaniam said.North America Hand Sanitizer Market Size: Strong Growth Ahead (2024-2032)

A former wide receiver for the Buffalo Bills is accused of intentionally infecting a woman, and others, with an incurable STD, according to a new lawsuit. In the lawsuit, the woman says Eric Moulds kept quiet about having herpes during their monthslong romantic relationship in 2023. After they exchanged messages over Instagram in January 2023, Moulds offered her “an all-expenses paid trip” and flew her out to see him in Charlotte, North Carolina, according to a complaint filed Dec. 10 in New York State Superior Court. They began a sexual relationship during this trip, the complaint says. Moulds, as a Buffalo Bills player from 1996 to 2005, played in the NFL’s Pro Bowl three times and has a football training facility in Charlotte, according to the Buffalo News, which first reported on the lawsuit. According to the complaint, the woman continued to visit Moulds, who paid for her flights, until November 2023, which was the last time they were intimate and had unprotected sex. Moulds never told her that he had herpes, the complaint says. Instead, his pregnant fiancée did when she contacted the woman in December 2023 and suggested that she get tested for STDs “because she, along with other women whom (Moulds) had relationships with, had been transmitted diseases by him,” according to the complaint. The woman, who didn’t know Moulds had been in a relationship with his fiancée for eight years, tested positive for herpes simplex virus type 2 that month, the complaint says. The woman, of Erie County, New York, is suing Moulds, who lives in Rock Hill, South Carolina, on claims of negligence and for purposefully giving her an STD. Moulds hasn’t been officially served with the lawsuit as of Dec. 12, but is aware of it, according to his attorney Frank LoTempio III. “We are in the process of preparing a response and possibly a motion to dismiss,” LoTempio told McClatchy News via email on Dec. 12. “We will be fully defending this action against him.” Tried ‘to buy her silence’ According to the lawsuit, Moulds first reached out to the woman over Instagram in 2018 and they would occasionally message each other before reconnecting over the social media platform in January 2023. After her herpes diagnosis, the complaint says the woman learned Moulds “also engaged with multiple women besides (her) via social media.” He’s accused of targeting “single mothers who were Buffalo Bills fans living in Western New York.” According to the complaint, Moulds used his “celebrity status” as an NFL star to meet women online and initiate sexual conversations before later offering “all-expenses-paid invitations to see him in person to convert the online relationship into (an) intimate sexual relationship.” The woman isn’t the first to similarly sue Moulds, the complaint says. Moulds is accused of giving other women herpes and paying them to drop lawsuits they filed against him, according to the complaint, which says he had them sign non-disclosure agreements. The woman suing him now says she hadn’t been intimate with anyone else throughout her relationship with Moulds. “In the wake of another potential lawsuit, (Moulds) offered money in an attempt to buy her silence,” the complaint says. The woman seeks an unspecified amount in damages with her lawsuit. The herpes simplex virus 2 can lead to recurring “painful blisters or ulcers” in the genital area, according to the World Health Organization. Though incurable, the disease’s symptoms can be treated. Most people who have herpes don’t experience symptoms or only have mild symptoms, the WHO says online. “(Moulds’) conduct was outrageous and extreme as it put his own sexual desires over (the woman’s) permanent health,” the complaint says.Labor minister claims 'three fatal errors' in Peter Dutton's nuclear plan, as costs revealed

Maeda saves point for Celtic against Club Brugge after Carter-Vickers errorThe Virginia women's basketball program has received what it is calling a "transformational gift" from Alexis Ohanian that will help the Cavaliers' recruiting and retention efforts. The school announced the gift from Ohanian, the co-founder and former executive chairman of the social media site Reddit and a 2005 graduate of UVa's McIntire School of Commerce, on Thursday. The specific amount that Ohanian is giving to the program was not revealed, but the school said in a release that it is the largest gift in the history of the Virginia women’s basketball program and the second largest gift to women’s athletics in UVa history. The school also said Ohanian's gift will span multiple years and will help with the program's "recruiting and retention of championship-level talent" in the new era of college sports where athletes can earn compensation through their name, image and likeness rights and revenue sharing. “Alexis’ commitment to women’s sports is unparalleled,” Virginia Director of Athletics Carla Williams said in a release. “He sees the value and he is willing to invest. His support will help attract championship talent to the University of Virginia and specifically, to UVa women’s basketball. I am extremely grateful for his foresight and commitment to the future of women’s athletics at the University of Virginia.” Thursday's announcement of Ohanian's gift came a week after the Virginia football program announced that it had received a multimillion-dollar gift from an anonymous donor to help coach Tony Elliott and his staff improve the Cavaliers' roster. Serena Williams, her husband Alexis Ohanian and daughter Adira River look on in Paris, France, during the opening ceremony of the 2024 Summer Olympics on Friday, July 26, 2024. Ohanian, a 2005 Virginia graduate, has given a "transformational gift" to the Virginia women's basketball program. Ohanian, who is the husband of tennis legend Serena Williams, is well regarded for his investments in women's sports. He was the founding owner of Angel City FC, the Los Angeles franchise in the National Women's Soccer League before selling his controlling stake in the club to Disney CEO Bob Iger and his wife Willow Bay. Earlier this year, Ohanian and his venture capital firm Seven Seven Six put together a women's track and field event called Athlos, which offered the biggest prize purse ever for a track and field meet. Event winners earned $60,000, while second-place finishers took home $25,000, and third place got $10,000 Now Ohanian is making a big investment in women's basketball at his alma mater, and he is confident it will produce winning results. “It’s probably the question I get the most often these days — when are you going to make moves in women’s basketball?” Ohanian said in a release. “I am proud to support the women’s program at my alma mater with this donation. It’s time to bring the nation’s best hoops talent to Charlottesville and win some championships in the next four years.” John Shifflett jshifflett2@dailyprogress.com @John_Shifflett on X Get local news delivered to your inbox!
