Trudeau, Carney push back over Trump’s ongoing 51st state comments

How Blake Lively once complicated her advocacy against Hollywood predatorsTwo senior members of the federal cabinet were in Florida Friday pushing Canada’s new border plan with Donald Trump’s transition team, a day after Trudeau himself appeared to finally push back at the president-elect over his social media posts about turning Canada into the 51st state. Both Trudeau and former Bank of Canada governor Mark Carney, who Trudeau has been courting to become Canada’s next finance minister, shared posts on X Thursday, a day after Trump’s latest jab at Canada in his Christmas Day message. It isn’t clear if Finance Minister Dominic LeBlanc, who has repeatedly insisted Trump’s 51st state references are a joke, will raise the issue with Trump’s team when he and Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly meet with them in Palm Beach. The two are there to discuss Canada’s new $1.3 billion border plan with just under four weeks left before Trump is sworn in again as president. He has threatened to impose a new 25 per cent import tariff on Canada and Mexico the same day over concerns about a trade imbalance, as well as illegal drugs and migration issues at the borders. The broad strokes of Canada’s plan were made public Dec. 17, including a new aerial intelligence task force to provide round-the-clock surveillance of the border, and improved efforts using technology and canine teams to seek out drugs in shipments leaving Canada LeBlanc’s spokesman, Jean-Sébastien Comeau, said the ministers will also emphasize the negative impacts of Trump’s threatened tariffs on both Canada and the U.S. Comeau said the ministers will build on the discussions that took place last month when Trudeau and LeBlanc met Trump at Mar-a-Lago just days after Trump first made his tariff threat. It was at that dinner on Nov. 29 when Trump first raised the notion of Canada becoming the 51st state, a comment LeBlanc has repeatedly since insisted was just a joke. But Trump has continued the quip repeatedly in various social media posts, including in his Christmas Day message when he said Canadians would pay lower taxes and have better military protection if they became Americans. He has taken to calling Trudeau “governor” instead of prime minister. Trudeau had not directly responded to any of the jabs, but on Thursday posted a link to a six-minute long video on YouTube from 2010 in which American journalist Tom Brokaw “explains Canada to Americans.” The video, which originally aired during the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, explains similarities between the two countries, including their founding based on immigration, their trading relationship and the actions of the Canadian Army in World War 2 and other modern conflicts. “In the long history of sovereign neighbours there has never been a relationship as close, productive and peaceful as the U.S. and Canada,” Brokaw says in the video. Trudeau did not expand about why he posted a link to the video, posting it only with the words “some information about Canada for Americans.” Carney, who is at the centre of some of Trudeau’s recent domestic political troubles, also called out Trump’s antics on X Thursday, calling it “casual disrespect” and “carrying the ‘joke’ too far.” “Time to call it out, stand up for Canada, and build a true North American partnership,” said Carney, who Trudeau was courting to join his cabinet before Chrystia Freeland resigned as finance minister last week. Freeland’s sudden departure, three days after Trudeau informed her he would be firing her as finance minister in favour of Carney, left Trudeau’s leadership even more bruised than it already was. Despite the expectation Carney would assume the role, he did not and has not made any statements about it. LeBlanc was sworn in as finance minister instead the same day Freeland quit. More than two dozen Liberal MPs have publicly called on Trudeau to resign as leader, and Trudeau is said to be taking the holidays to think about his next steps. He is currently vacationing in British Columbia.

41,715 Shares in The Kraft Heinz Company (NASDAQ:KHC) Acquired by Segall Bryant & Hamill LLCGlobal stocks mostly rose Tuesday, with US and German indices posting records, as markets weighed Chinese stimulus hopes, political tensions in France and the US interest-rate outlook. Germany's blue-chip DAX stock index jumped above 20,000 points for the first time and Paris rebounded even as France braced for new political turmoil. In New York, both the S&P 500 and Nasdaq narrowly rose to finish at records, while the Dow pulled back. Oil prices jumped more than two percent following reports that crude exporters were near an agreement to extend production limits. A closely-watched labor market report showed an increase in US job openings in October, but also a decline in new job postings during the month, a less upbeat sign. Samuel Tombs, chief US economist at Pantheon Macroeconomics, said the data overall provides "good grounds" for the Federal Reserve to lower interest rates again this month. Still, the choppiness of Tuesday's trading session in New York points to reticence among US investors following a series of post-election records that many pundits believe have left stocks overvalued. "There wasn't a lot of conviction behind the upside moves," said Briefing.com . "The overall vibe in the market was more negative." Stocks in Paris edged higher even as France headed into a new political crisis as opposition lawmakers vowed to topple the minority government of Prime Minister Michel Barnier in a no-confidence vote after just three months in office. Germany's DAX, meanwhile, scored a fresh milestone, defying multiple headwinds battering Europe's biggest economy. The German economy, hit hard by a manufacturing slowdown and weak demand for its exports, has struggled in 2024. Yet the DAX has advanced in large part because companies in the index do heavy business abroad. In addition, the euro's recent weakness has boosted Germany's export-oriented companies, while easing interest rates both in the eurozone and the United States have also helped sentiment. Investors greeted a Bloomberg report that China's top leaders, including President Xi Jinping, would hold a two-day economic work conference next week to outline their targets and stimulus plans for next year. The report followed manufacturing activity data on Monday that suggested China's economic struggles may be coming to an end, but investors are looking for Beijing to step up support for the economy. The news helped push Hong Kong and Shanghai stock markets higher despite Washington announcing new export restrictions taking aim at Beijing's ability to make advanced semiconductors. The moves step up existing US efforts to tighten curbs on exports of state-of-the-art AI chips to China. Beijing hit back by saying it would restrict exports to the United States of some key components in making semiconductors. Oil prices jumped ahead of a meeting Thursday of members of the OPEC oil cartel and its allies "The forecast is that they will announce an extension until the end of the first quarter of 2025, and this should help put a floor under prices," said Trade Nation analyst David Morrison. The new year will bring a new administration, and I'll be watching to see if President-elect Donald Trump's team finally puts an end to the worldwide taxation of individual Americans' income. Fixing this is imperative. It would not only be sound fiscal policy, but could keep millions of law-abiding Americans living overseas from being treated like financial pariahs. Trump seems to agree. "I support ending the double taxation of overseas Americans," he promised in a campaign statement. This problem is rooted in America's bizarre worldwide tax system. Most people don't realize it, but if you're a U.S. citizen, the IRS wants to know about all the dollars or euros you earn, no matter where in the world you earn them. This isn't about jetsetters or Americans hiding money in offshore accounts. It's a tax grab that applies even if you haven't lived here for decades and pay your fair share in another country. It's like having the IRS follow you around the globe, demanding an account of every paycheck, bank account or investment. Here is how it works: If you live and work exclusively outside of the United States, you must file a U.S. tax return reporting your income, foreign bank accounts containing over $10,000, retirement accounts, investments and other financial details. You're responsible for paying U.S. taxes on income above certain thresholds and navigating complex forms and rules to avoid or minimize double taxation. This is not only unfair but uniquely so. The United States is the only developed nation that taxes based on citizenship rather than residency. We are in terrible company. As the Cato Institute's Adam Michel writes, "Eritrea's brutal dictatorship is the only other country to come close, imposing a 2 percent levy on all expatriates." Double taxation most commonly sets in when you live in one of the many countries not covered by a tax treaty, or for foreign-earned income not protected by the Section 911 exclusion (which currently exempts up to $126,500) or other provisions that "allow foreign tax credits to offset similar taxes paid to other governments," Michel explains. Common financial activities that are tax-advantaged in one's country of residence (like retirement accounts or home sales) may still trigger U.S. tax liability. Americans living abroad must essentially maintain two parallel tax lives and shoulder a higher burden than either U.S.-based taxpayers or those in their country of residence. The better alternative is a territorial tax system, based on the principle that income should be taxed where it's earned. Under such a system, if you are an American living and working in Singapore, the income you earn there is taxed only in Singapore. Territorial taxation is a fundamental concept of sound tax policy that the U.S. citizenship-based system violates. In fact, Trump's tax reform of 2017 changed the worldwide taxation of corporations to quasi-territorial. But the worst of it lies in how remarkably difficult banking has become for many Americans overseas. Thanks to the misguided Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act, foreign financial institutions often choose to deny services to U.S. citizens living abroad rather than deal with the complex reporting requirements. These individuals can thus encounter enormous difficulty in opening bank accounts, getting mortgages and participating in local investment and retirement plans. To recap, Americans abroad must pay taxes in their country of residence, file and potentially pay additional U.S. taxes on the same income and can't always expect adequate financial services, all despite typically receiving very few U.S. government services. Some who face these burdens maintain minimal ties to the United States. The penalties for noncompliance are wildly disproportionate. Simple filing mistakes can result in tens of thousands of dollars in fines, even when no tax was owed. Complexity makes such mistakes easy to commit, even with professional help. While the administration has tools to limit FATCA enforcement, altogether ending it would require congressional repeal. The best way, of course, would be for Trump and Congress to work together. As for the underlying problem of worldwide taxation, the U.S. should join the rest of the developed world and adopt a residence-based tax and reporting system. This would address all the aforementioned problems and stop treating solid citizens like criminals -- all while maintaining the ability to tax U.S. residents on their worldwide income and combat actual tax evasion. Such a reform would also save government resources wasted on processing complex returns from Americans abroad who ultimately owe no taxes. It would encourage global mobility for U.S. citizens, including many who are abroad promoting U.S. companies, and make American workers more competitive internationally. Amid reports that Gaza cease-fire talks may be resuming, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz expressed optimism that “this time, we can truly advance a hostage deal.” A Qatari newspaper reported that an Israeli delegation—headed by Shin Bet chief Ronen Bar—was set to travel to Cairo on Dec. 5 for talks on a potential deal over hostages and a cease-fire. Katz, speaking to soldiers at an air force base in central Israel, attributed the improved outlook to Israeli military pressure on Hamas. The development comes after a Lebanon cease-fire began on Nov. 27. On Dec. 2, President-elect Donald Trump said there would be “hell to pay” in the Middle East if hostages held in Gaza were not released before his inauguration. Trump’s nominee for national security adviser, Mike Waltz, was set to meet with Israeli Minister of Strategic Affairs Ron Dermer on Dec. 4. Hezbollah, which had previously refused to consider a cease-fire unless Israel pulled out of Gaza, was hard hit in recent months. The Israeli army eliminated many of the terrorist group’s top leaders, including longtime head Hassan Nasrallah, with targeted air strikes. And in an audacious strike on Sept. 17, thousands of pagers exploded on their Hezbollah users simultaneously—followed by a second wave of exploding handheld radios the next day—further crippling its leadership ranks. At least 39 people were killed in the blasts, and Lebanon said nearly 3,000 others were wounded. Hamas, in more than a year of warfare started by its Oct. 7 attack on Israel, has suffered the same kinds of losses. Trump’s impending return to power may be loosening a diplomatic logjam lasting more than a year. The United States, Egypt, and Qatar have tried unsuccessfully to broker a cease-fire and Israeli withdrawal from Gaza in exchange for the return of around 100 hostages, a third of whom are believed dead, still held by Hamas after having been taken captive on Oct. 7, 2023. “Those responsible will be hit harder than anybody has been hit in the long and storied history of the United States of America,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu thanked him in a Dec. 3 post on X. “I want to thank President Trump for his strong statement yesterday about the need for Hamas to release the hostages, the responsibility of Hamas, and this adds another force to our continued effort to release all the hostages.” Israeli ministers also thanked the president-elect. “How refreshing it is to hear clear and morally sound statements that do not create a false equivalence or call for addressing ‘both sides’, but rather clarify who are the good and who are the bad,” said Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich. “This is the way to bring back the hostages: by increasing the pressure and the costs for Hamas and its supporters, and defeating them, rather than giving in to their absurd demands,” he said. Foreign Minister Gideon Saar said simply on X: “Thank you, President Trump.” A senior Hamas official interpreted Trump’s words as directed at Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Basem Naim said Netanyahu had sabotaged all efforts to secure a deal that involved exchanging the hostages for Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli prisons. Naim said Trump’s message was intended to pressure Netanyahu to “end this evil game.” A Gaza political analyst, Ramiz Moghani, said Trump’s words might embolden Israel not only to expel Palestinians from Gaza but also to annex the West Bank, which many Israelis refer to as Judea and Samaria. An eight-day cease-fire took place in late November 2023, during which more than 100 Israeli hostages were released. Since then, little progress has been made, with each side blaming the other. Meanwhile, fighting has continued across Gaza. On Dec. 4, an Israeli strike on a camp housing hundreds of thousands of displaced people near Khan Yunis killed 21 people and wounded 29, a Palestinian health official said. Gaza health authorities do not distinguish between civilians and fighters from Hamas and other terrorist groups such as Palestinian Islamic Jihad. Fighting was also reported in Rafah and near a hospital in Beit Lahiya in northern Gaza. Further Hamas threats against the hostages have come to light. In an internal statement on Nov. 22, Hamas told its operatives Israel intended to carry out a hostage rescue operation and threatened to “neutralize” the captives in that event. Hamas told its operatives not to consider any repercussions of following the instructions.US President-elect Donald Trump filed a brief Friday urging the Supreme Court to pause a law that would ban TikTok the day before his January 20 inauguration if it is not sold by its Chinese owner ByteDance. "In light of the novelty and difficulty of this case, the court should consider staying the statutory deadline to grant more breathing space to address these issues," Trump's legal team wrote, to give him "the opportunity to pursue a political resolution." Low melting point fiber technology innovation changes the textile industry 12-20-2024 06:50 PM CET | Associations & Organizations Press release from: ABNewswire In recent years, the textile industry [ https://www.xmdxlfiber.com/ ] has witnessed a major shift towards the adoption of low melting point fibers (LMPF), a development that promises to revolutionize fabric manufacturing and sustainability. These specialty fibers, which melt at relatively low temperatures, are being incorporated into applications ranging from fashion to industrial textiles, offering unique advantages that traditional fibers cannot match. Typically made from polymers such as polycaprolactone or certain types of polyester, LMPFs [ https://www.xmdxlfiber.com/]are particularly valuable because they can be bonded to other materials without the use of additional adhesives. This feature not only simplifies the production process, but also improves the durability and performance of the final product. As manufacturers seek to reduce waste and increase efficiency, the use of LMPFs has become increasingly attractive. One of the most exciting applications for low-melt point fibers is in the field of sustainable fashion. Designers are using these fibers to create innovative garments that are not only fashionable but also environmentally friendly. By using LMPF, brands can reduce the water and energy consumed in the production process to meet the growing consumer demand for environmentally friendly products. In addition, the ability to bond fabrics at lower temperatures minimizes the risk of damaging delicate materials, allowing for more creative designs. The automotive and aerospace industries are also exploring the potential of LMPF. These fibers can be used in composites to provide lightweight yet strong solutions for improved fuel efficiency and performance. As companies strive to meet stringent emissions and sustainability regulations, LMPF offers a promising avenue for innovation. As research in this field continues to advance, the future of low-melt point fibers looks bright. ROSEN, A LEADING LAW FIRM, Encourages ASP Isotopes Inc. Investors to Secure Counsel Before ...US added a strong 227,000 jobs in November in bounce-back from October slowdown WASHINGTON (AP) — America’s job market rebounded in November, adding 227,000 workers in a solid recovery from the previous month, when the effects of strikes and hurricanes had sharply diminished employers’ payrolls. Last month’s hiring growth was up considerably from a meager gain of 36,000 jobs in October. The government also revised up its estimate of job growth in September and October by a combined 56,000. Friday’s report also showed that the unemployment rate ticked up from 4.1% in October to a still-low 4.2%. The November data provided the latest evidence that the U.S. job market remains durable even though it has lost significant momentum from the 2021-2023 hiring boom, when the economy was rebounding from the pandemic recession. Federal appeals court upholds law requiring sale or ban of TikTok in the US A federal appeals court panel on Friday unanimously upheld a law that could lead to a ban on TikTok in a few short months, handing a resounding defeat to the popular social media platform as it fights for its survival in the U.S. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit ruled that the law - which requires TikTok to break ties with its China-based parent company ByteDance or be banned by mid-January — is constitutional, rebuffing TikTok’s challenge that the statute ran afoul of the First Amendment and unfairly targeted the platform. TikTok and ByteDance — another plaintiff in the lawsuit — are expected to appeal to the Supreme Court. Stock market today: Wall Street hits more records following a just-right jobs report NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. stocks rose to records after data suggested the job market remains solid enough to keep the economy going, but not so strong that it raises immediate worries about inflation. The S&P 500 climbed 0.2%, just enough top the all-time high set on Wednesday, as it closed a third straight winning week in what looks to be one of its best years since the 2000 dot-com bust. The Dow Jones Industrial Average dipped 0.3%, while the Nasdaq composite climbed 0.8% to set its own record. Treasury yields eased after the jobs report showed stronger hiring than expected but also an uptick in the unemployment rate. Killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO spotlights complex challenge companies face in protecting top brass NEW YORK (AP) — In an era when online anger and social tensions are increasingly directed at the businesses consumers count on, Meta last year spent $24.4 million to surround CEO Mark Zuckerberg with security. But the fatal shooting this week of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson while walking alone on a New York City sidewalk has put a spotlight on the widely varied approaches companies take to protect their leaders against threats. And experts say the task of evaluating threats against executives and taking action to protect them is getting more difficult. One of the primary worries are loners whose rantings online are fed by others who are like-minded. It’s up to corporate security analysts to decide what represents a real threat. Police believe the gunman who killed UnitedHealthcare's CEO quickly left NYC on a bus after shooting NEW YORK (AP) — Police officials say the gunman who killed the CEO of the largest U.S. health insurer likely left New York City on a bus soon after fleeing the scene on a bicycle and hopping in a cab. Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny says video of the gunman fleeing Wednesday’s shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson showed him riding through Central Park and later taking a taxi to a bus terminal, directly across from New Jersey. Police have video of the man entering the bus station but no video of him exiting. Investigators on Friday found a backpack in Central Park that was carried by the shooter, police said. USDA orders nationwide testing of milk for bird flu to halt the virus The U.S. government has ordered testing of the nation’s milk supply for bird flu to better monitor the spread of the virus in dairy cows. The Agriculture Department on Friday said raw or unpasteurized milk from dairy farms and processors nationwide must be tested on request starting Dec. 16. Testing will begin in six states — California, Colorado, Michigan, Mississippi, Oregon and Pennsylvania. The move is aimed at eliminating the virus, which has infected more than 700 dairy herds in 15 states. Words on ammo in CEO shooting echo common phrase on insurer tactics: Delay, deny, defend A message left at the scene of an insurance executive’s fatal shooting echoes a phrase commonly used to describe insurer tactics to avoid paying claims. The words “deny,” “defend” and “depose” were written on the ammunition used to kill UnitedHealthcare's CEO. That's according to two officials who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Thursday. The words are similar to the phrase “delay, deny, defend.” That's how attorneys describe insurers denying services and payment, and the title of a 2010 book critical of the industry. Police haven’t officially commented on the words. But Thompson’s shooting and the messages on the ammunition have sparked outrage on social media and elsewhere, reflecting frustration Americans have over the cost and complexity of getting care. Michigan Democrats move to protect reproductive health data before GOP takes control of House LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Democrats in Michigan are pressing to pass reproductive health care legislation before the party loses its majority with the new legislative session next year. A bill to protect digital reproductive health data including data logged on menstrual cycle tracking apps is a Democratic priority as lawmakers meet this month. Democratic women and supporters of the legislation say they are acting with new urgency before President-elect Donald Trump takes office because they don't believe his campaign promise to leave abortion to the states. The rush is also a reaction to Republicans taking control of the state House in January. Democrats kept control of the state Senate in the November election. Japan's Nippon Steel sets sights on a growing overseas market in its bid to acquire US Steel KASHIMA, Japan (AP) — The signs at Nippon Steel read: “The world through steel,” underlining why Japan’s top steelmaker is pursuing its $15 billion bid to acquire U.S. Steel. Japan's domestic market isn't growing, so Nippon Steel has its eyes on India, Southeast Asia and the United States, where populations are still growing. Nippon Steel gave reporters a tour of one of its plants in Japan on Friday. The bid for U.S. Steet is opposed by President-elect Donald Trump, President Joe Biden and American steelworkers. If the deal goes through, U.S. Steel will keep its name and its headquarters in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, but become subsidiary of Nippon Steel. China's ban on key high-tech materials could have broad impact on industries, economy BANGKOK (AP) — China has banned exports of key materials used for a wide range of products, including smartphones, electric vehicles, radar systems and CT scanners, swiping back at Washington after it expanded export controls to include dozens of Chinese companies that make equipment used to produce computer chips. Both sides say the controls are justified by national security concerns. Analysts say they could have a much wider impact on manufacturing in many industries and supply chains, depending on the ability of each side to compensate for loss of access to strategically important materials, equipment and components. Here's why this could be a tipping point in trade conflict between the two biggest economies.

As we age, our cognitive and motor functions degrade, reducing our independence and overall quality of life. Research efforts to mitigate or perhaps eliminate this have resulted in technologies that hold a lot of promise. Now, scientists led by Friedhelm Hummel at EPFL have identified an important factor affecting an individual’s responsiveness to atDCS. The team looked at how native learning abilities determine the effect of brain stimulation applied while learning a motor task. Their findings suggest that individuals with less efficient learning mechanisms benefit more from stimulation, while those with optimal learning strategies might experience negative effects. Among these is non-invasive brain stimulation: a term encompassing a set of techniques that can affect brain functions externally and noninvasively, without the need for surgery or implants. One such promising technique, in particular, is anodal transcranial direct current stimulation (atDCS), which uses a constant, low electrical current delivered via electrodes on the scalp to modulate neuronal activity. However, studies exploring atDCS have produced inconsistent results, which has prompted researchers to explore why some people benefit from atDCS while others don’t. The problem seems to lie in our understanding of factors that may influence responsiveness to brain stimulation, leading to responders and non-responders; among these, age has been suggested as one important factor. Some studies suggest further factors such as baseline behavioural abilities and previous training might be important considerations, but an interplay of these factors with behaviour has not been determined in detail, pointing to the need of refined predictive models of the effects of atDCS. The researchers recruited 40 participants: 20 middle-aged adults (50-65 years old) and 20 older adults (over 65). Each group was further divided into those receiving active atDCS and those receiving placebo stimulation. Over ten days, participants practised a finger-tapping task designed to study motor sequence learning at home while receiving atDCS. The task involved replicating a numerical sequence using a keypad, trying to be as fast and as accurate as possible. The team then used a machine-learning model trained on a public dataset to classify participants as either “optimal” or “suboptimal” learners, based on their initial performance. This model aimed to predict who would benefit from atDCS, based on their ability to integrate information about the task efficiently early during training. The study found that suboptimal learners, who were seemingly less efficient at internalizing the task at the early stages of learning, experienced an accelerated accuracy improvement while performing the task when receiving atDCS. This effect was not limited to people of a certain age (e.g., older adults), with suboptimal learners being found among younger individuals as well. In contrast, participants with optimal learning strategies, regardless of age, even showed a negative trend in performance when receiving atDCS. This difference suggests that brain stimulation is more beneficial for individuals who initially struggle with motor tasks. As such, atDCS seems to possess a restorative rather than an enhancing quality, with important implications for rehabilitation. “By leveraging different methods in Machine learning, we were able to untangle the influence of different factors on the individual effects of brain stimulation,” said Pablo Maceira, the study’s first author. “This will pave the way to maximize the effects of brain stimulation in individual subjects and patients.” The study implies that, in the long run, personalized brain stimulation protocols will be developed to maximize benefits based on an individual’s specific needs, rather than a common trait such as age. This approach could lead to more effective brain stimulation-based interventions, targeting specific mechanisms supporting learning, especially in the view of neurorehabilitation, for which the main basis is the re-learning of lost skills due to a brain lesion (e.g., after a stroke or a traumatic brain injury). “In the future, clinicians could apply a more advanced version of our algorithm to determine whether a patient will benefit from a brain stimulation-based therapy, to enhance the effects of neurorehabilitation and personalize treatment,” said Hummel. (AP Photo/Luca Bruno) FLORENCE, Italy (AP) — Inter Milan beat Como 2-0 to cement third place in Serie A and close the gap on top two Atalanta and Napoli on Monday. Carlos Augusto got the opener when he headed home a corner kick in the 48th minute. Marcus Thuram scored the second in stoppage time with a potent strike into the roof of the net. It was the first time these teams have played each other in the top division since 2003 and although Inter had lost only one league game all season it struggled to impose itself on 15th-placed Como. However, it won without exerting itself and the three points were enough to take Simone Inzaghi’s men within three points of leader Atalanta and within one of Napoli. Inter has a game in hand over both clubs. Fiorentina misses chance to rise Fiorentina missed a chance to go fourth when it lost at home to Udinese 2-1. The Florence club won a record eight consecutive Serie A games before losing to Bologna 1-0 on Dec. 15, and it looked to be back on track when Moises Kean converted a penalty after eight minutes to become the first Fiorentina player to reach double figures in the league since Federico Chiesa in the 2019-20 season. However, Udinese was a different prospect after the break. Lorenzo Lucca equalized with the aid of sloppy defending four minutes into the second half and then Florian Thauvin found space on the edge of the box to curl in the second eight minutes later. The result left Udinese in ninth place and Fiorentina in fifth. The match was a special one for Edoardo Bove, the Fiorentina player whose collapse with a heart issue led to the suspension of its game with Inter Milan on Dec. 1. Bove was fitted with a defibrillator implant soon after and sat on the Fiorentina bench for the first time since his collapse. He is not allowed to play but his position on the sideline alongside coach Raffaele Palladino was seen as a step towards normality for the 22-year-old midfielder. ___ AP soccer: https://apnews.com/hub/soccer The Associated Press See a typo/mistake? ( MENAFN - IANS) London, Dec 1 (IANS) Bukayo Saka scored once and provided two assists as Arsenal thrashed West Ham United 5-2 to moved up to second in the Premier League table. All of the goals came in a remarkable opening period at London Stadium, where Gabriel Magalhaes, Leandro Trossard, Martin Odegaard and Kai Havertz put Arsenal 4-0 up inside 36 minutes. But quickfire strikes from Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Emerson gave West Ham hope, though their chances of a comeback were quashed when Saka, who also provided two assists, added Arsenal's fifth on the stroke of half-time. It is only the fourth time in Premier League history that there have been seven goals scored in a single half, but the Gunners put in a more measured display after the interval to ensure there was no hint of further drama. Arsenal now sit six points behind leaders Liverpool, who face a heavyweight clash with Manchester City on Sunday, while West Ham remain in 14th. Saka created Arsenal's first two goals, with his 10th-minute corner headed home by Gabriel, before the England winger laid it on a plate for Trossard to tuck in a second before the half-hour. In so doing, Saka became the first player to reach double, Premier League reports. Arsenal seemed to seal the win with two quick goals. Odegaard converted a penalty after Lucas Paqueta fouled Saka, and Havertz capitalized on poor defending to score past Lukasz Fabianski. In stoppage time of the first half, Gabriel was punched by Fabianski, and after a VAR review, the penalty was confirmed. Saka stepped up and fired the ball past Fabianski to restore Arsenal's three-goal lead in the stoppage time of the first half. Michail Antonio almost cut the deficit again after the break, though his effort deflected narrowly wide, while West Ham substitute Danny Ings could only drill wide after rounding David Raya late on as Arsenal held out for an emphatic triumph. "We made it crazy. We played so well at the start of the game. We scored three early goals and then they score one immediately after kick-off and then another one - then it was game on. We have to manage the game - we did that really well. The last two games were tricky and to score goals is a big one," Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta said after the win. US budget airlines are struggling. Will pursuing premium passengers solve their problems?

Iowa quarterback Cade McNamara released a statement Friday slamming the "100% false" media reports that suggested he had thrown his final pass for the Hawkeyes. McNamara has been sidelined since sustaining a concussion during the Oct. 26 win against Northwestern. Backup quarterback Brendan Sullivan has started the last two games for the Hawkeyes (6-4, 4-3 Big Ten) but is out with an ankle injury for Saturday's game at Maryland (4-6, 1-6). Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz said earlier this week that Jackson Stratton will be the likely starter against the Terrapins if McNamara is unavailable. McNamara's cloudy status prompted speculation on a podcast this week that he was "not mentally ready to play." The podcast hosts from the Des Moines Register and The Athletic also suggested that McNamara -- who played three years at Michigan (2020-22) before transferring to Iowa -- is not "fit to play quarterback in the Big Ten right now." "We don't want to bury his career yet, but it does seem like that interception against Northwestern was his last snap as a Hawkeye," Leistikow said. McNamara, who passed for 1,017 yards with six touchdowns and five interceptions in eight games this season, released a statement updating his current status. "My status is the same as it's always been -- a proud member of this football team," he said. McNamara said he has not yet been cleared to play. He said he was cleared to practice on Sunday but suffered an "adverse reaction" and was unable to practice this week and therefore unable to travel with the team to Maryland. "I have been working with the University of Iowa doctors and trainers, a concussion specialist focused on vision training, as well as engaging in hyperbaric treatments as frequently as possible," McNamara said. "I have every intention to play versus Nebraska next Friday night and I am confident that my teammates will return from Maryland with a win." Including his time with the Wolverines, McNamara has completed 60.9 percent of his passes for 4,703 yards with 31 touchdowns and 15 interceptions in 34 games. --Field Level MediaDeWayne Carter jumped right back into the defensive line rotation for the Buffalo Bills on Sunday. The rookie third-round draft choice played 24 snaps during the team’s 44-42 loss to the Los Angeles Rams at SoFi Stadium. That was 31% of the defensive total. Carter made his return to the lineup after missing five games with a wrist injury suffered in Week 7 against Tennessee. The Bills have sunk to 25th in the NFL on third-down defense, allowing opponents to convert 43.2% of their opportunities into first downs. Buffalo allowed the Rams to convert 11 of 15 third-down chances in Sunday’s 44-42 loss. He did not register any statistics in his return to the lineup. Here are four more takeaways from the Bills’ snap counts in their Week 14 loss. 1. Lewis Cine played special teams in his Bills debut. Called up from the practice squad Saturday, Cine played 16 snaps on special teams against the Rams, which was 48% of the team total. 2. Dawson Knox was busy. Down Dalton Kincaid and Quintin Morris at the position, Knox played 49 snaps, which was 82% of the team total. That was the highest amount for any player on offense, with the exception of quarterback Josh Allen and the starting offensive line. Knox had one catch for 5 yards. Bills linebacker Matt Milano attempts to make a tackle on Rams receiver Puka Nacua during Sunday's game. 3. Matt Milano played a healthy amount again. In his second game back from injury, Milano played 65 defensive snaps, which was 84% of the team total. Milano finished with three tackles, including one for a loss. Cooper led the Bills with 14 targets, more than doubling his previous high of five targets in his five games with the team since coming over in a trade with the Cleveland Browns in October. Cooper finished with six catches against the Rams for 95 yards, both of which are his best in a game for the Bills. “I thought there were some flashes from Matt,” head coach Sean McDermott said. “He’s getting his legs back underneath him.” 4. Ray Davis never touched the ball. The rookie running back played 13 offensive snaps (22%), but did not receive a carry and was not targeted in the passing game. Player of the game: Josh Allen Obviously. The Bills’ quarterback became the first player in NFL history to ever record three rushing and three passing touchdowns in the same regular-season game. It’s hard to believe that perhaps the best two games Allen has ever played – the “13 seconds” postseason game against the Chiefs and this one – both resulted in losses. He deserved so much better Sunday. Three questions on our mind after Sunday’s loss by the Bills to the Los Angeles Rams. Quote of the game “I hate losing. If you lose by two, you lose by 100, it doesn't matter, you're still losing. Offensively, we've got to find ways to score before the half and score after the half, so didn't do our part, either. Just trying to go out there and execute the play call to the best of our ability, and we didn't do that well enough tonight. I don't know the stats. I don't know how well we were on third down or completion percentage. I don't know any of that. I just know it wasn't good enough to win a football game.” – Allen, who shouldered way more blame for the loss than he needed to, which is what a true leader does. Stat of the game: 245-0 The record of teams to score at least six touchdowns and not turn the ball over in the Super Bowl era (dating back to 1970) before the Bills became the first team to lose such a game. If you are invested in the S&P 500 or even a global equities fund, you must be sitting on some very good profits. Returns from the MSCI World Index were also very good, only just slightly lower. The World Index too did well, largely driven by US stocks, which make up more than 70 per cent of the index. But what can investors expect from 2025 and how should they be positioned? Genevieve Cua, wealth editor of The Business Times speaks with Hou Wey Fook, chief investment officer of DBS Bank on the latest episode of WealthBT to garner his thoughts. Significant developments of 2024 First, the US presidential election - which saw Trump winning again - has potential implications for 2025 investment strategies. Secondly, the Federal Reserve pivoted from years of rate hikes to rate cuts. Lastly, the ongoing breakthroughs and the rise of artificial intelligence are impacting not just the technology sector, but all sectors of the global economy. With the enthusiasm surrounding AI lifting many US stocks, investors might wonder if it’s time to trim their US positions. Wey Fook shares insights on this question pointing out that companies such as NVIDIA, Amazon, Microsoft, and various software services and cybersecurity firms are leading the innovation charge. Asian market opportunities In contrast, Asian stocks also have their role, particularly in the manufacturing of complex chips by companies in Taiwan and Korea. Moreover, Asia is a fertile ground for dividend-yielding stocks like Singapore banks and Reits (Real Estate Investment Trusts), which offer consistent dividend payouts. Genevieve brought up the topic of risk premium and its current status given recent market performances. Wey Fook explained that risk premium is the additional return over cash deposits captured from bonds or stocks. While the risk premium has decreased, not all sectors are affected equally. Exploring the barbell approach Shifting to investment strategies, specifically the barbell approach which Wey Fook has long advocated. This approach involves constructing a portfolio with oversized positions in income-generating assets. He further expands on this in the podcast including how the strategy can withstand risk. He also shared valuable lessons from his 30 years of investment experience cautioning against frequent trading, which can lead to anchoring bias—where investors lock in profits too soon and miss out on greater long-term gains. Portfolio rebalancing In conclusion, strategists are emphasising the importance of maintaining US exposure while managing expectations for future returns. Individual portfolios should reflect unique objectives and proper asset allocation. Rebalancing portfolios by trimming equities can keep investments aligned with strategic goals. As the year unfolds, keeping a balance of risky growth assets and secure investments remains crucial. When Seuk Kim took off from Maryland last weekend with three small dogs aboard his plane, it was the latest of many volunteer flights he had made to rescue animals in need. After realizing a childhood dream of becoming a pilot, Kim transported cats and dogs from disaster areas, overcrowded shelters and other misfortunes — including a dog trapped for days in a shipping container — to rescue groups. He lined up other aviators to do the same. But Sunday's flight to New York was his last. Kim's 1986 Mooney M20J crashed in the snowy woods of the Catskill Mountains, killing the 49-year-old pilot and one of the dogs, authorities said. The other two pups survived and were recovering Tuesday. “There are very few people like Seuk in this world. He has no ulterior motives. He never needed recognition,” said Sydney Galley, a fellow rescue flight volunteer. “He just wanted to help.” RELATED STORY | 'Need all the help I can get': Hurricane-related IV shortage landed woman in hospital for 6 weeks Whiskey — a 4-month-old Labrador-mix puppy who was found huddled in the snow with two broken legs — was doing well while awaiting surgery at Pieper Memorial Veterinary emergency and specialty hospital in Middletown, Connecticut. Videos showed the tawny pup getting belly rubs, licking a staffer’s face and, later, calmly looking around while having a leg bandage changed. The other surviving dog, an 18-month-old Yorkshire terrier mix called Pluto, was found Monday with minor injuries. By Tuesday, Pluto was at the Animal Shelter of Schoharie Valley, the New York organization that had been set to receive all three dogs. The third was a 5-pound (2.3-kg) puppy named Lisa, Galley said. The Federal Aviation Administration said Tuesday that the aircraft crashed under unknown circumstances in mountainous terrain. National Transportation Safety Board investigators were at the crash site. Greene County Sheriff Peter Kusminsky has said visibility was poor Sunday and that Kim sought permission to change his altitude because of turbulence before the plane went down in early evening. Galley said the aircraft — Kim's third plane, purchased in recent months — was equipped with technology to help locate it in an emergency. Still, it took authorities until about midnight Sunday to find the aircraft, which was in about a foot of snow a couple of miles from the nearest road, the sheriff said. Kim lived with his wife and their three children in Springfield, Virginia. Originally from South Korea, he “came to this country with little but a dream, and through hard work and perseverance, he built a life of meaning and generosity,” cousin Christine Kim said in a Facebook message. “Witty, spontaneous, and full of boundless generosity,” he combined a caring heart with a sense of adventure, the Kim family said in an online obituary. RELATED STORY | 'Need all the help I can get': Hurricane-related IV shortage landed woman in hospital for 6 weeks Seuk Kim had worked in fields including public relations and marketing. His family said he had pastimes including cooking and following baseball, but he had long aspired to fly. He eventually made that wish come true, and Galley said Kim recently told friends that he had landed a job with a charter flight company. “He was on top of the world,” she said. Kim started flying rescue dogs about four years ago and became a dedicated volunteer who handled as many as three flights a week and helped line up other pilots, Galley said. Unfazed by huge dogs, cats that other pilots didn't want to fly, or animal potty accidents, he responded to virtually any request with a smile and “sure, I can do that,” she recalled. Earlier this year, he flew “Connie the container dog,” the canine found in a shipping container at the Port of Houston, according to Galley and to a post on his memorial website. After Hurricane Helene struck parts of the Southeast this fall, Kim helped fly planeloads of generators and other supplies to hard-hit western North Carolina and even acquired a pickup truck to drive in hay for farms, Galley recalled. Penny Edwards of Forever Changed Animal Rescue, one of the groups Kim helped with Helene response, called him “a huge asset to not just us but the entire rescue community.” “Our hearts are shattered,” she wrote in an email Tuesday. Maggie Jackman Pryor, the Animal Shelter of Schoharie Valley’s executive director, said Kim helped save hundreds of animals over the years. Among them were a dog and her five puppies that he flew in October to Cathy West of Kuddles & Kisses K9 Rescue in Baltimore. The mixed-breed dog had been on a list to be euthanized at an overfilled shelter in Tennessee, West said. “He was so involved in trying to get the word out to volunteer, to other pilots — that this is a good thing to save these dogs so that they don’t die in shelters,” she said. On Sunday, Galley said, Kim picked up four dogs at a Virginia airport where her husband had just transported them from Georgia. After excitedly telling her husband about his new charter-plane job, Kim took off, dropped a big dog at a small airport in Maryland, and headed on with the rest toward Albany, New York. She imagines that he apologized to his canine passengers as the plane went down. “He always,” she said, “put everybody ahead of himself.”NoneBournemouth star on Liverpool radar responds to Tottenham Hotspur interest

Donald Trump said a former Republican lawmaker belongs in jail, but that man isn't backing down against the president-elect's threats. Trump recently said members of Jan. 6 committee that investigated him during the final days of his first term "should be jailed," according to the Washington Post . “Everybody on that committee ... for what they did, yeah, honestly, they should go to jail,” Trump said in an interview, according to the Post. ALSO READ: The Medicare Advantage trap: What they don’t tell you Former Republican Representative Adam Kinzinger, of Illinois, a member of that committee, responded on Sunday. In an article entitled " Bring It On, Donald: The January 6 Committee Stands on Truth ," Kinzinger argues that the president-elect's "latest threat to 'jail' members of the January 6 Committee is nothing more than the desperate howl of a man who knows history will regard him with shame." "Let me be clear: we did nothing wrong," he then added. "The January 6 Committee's work was driven by facts, the Constitution, and the pursuit of accountability—principles that seem foreign to Trump." He continued: "If Donald wants to pursue this vindictive fantasy, I say bring it on. I’m not intimidated by a man whose actions on January 6th showed a cowardly disregard for democracy and the rule of law. A man too frightened to serve in the military, and who requires a strong man like Putin to feel secure. While his supporters were attacking the Capitol, Trump sat in the White House , watching in glee as law enforcement and elected officials scrambled to protect our republic." Kinzinger goes on to argue that the findings of the committee "cannot be erased by threats or political theater." "Our hearings laid bare the reality: this was no spontaneous protest. It was an assault on the foundations of our democracy, encouraged and abetted by the former president himself," he added. Ahead of Ohio State's appearance in the College Football Playoff, head coach Ryan Day received a vote of confidence from his athletic director despite the Buckeyes' latest loss to Michigan. Ohio State AD Ross Bjork appeared on 97.1 The Fan in Columbus on Thursday, where a radio host asked him whether Day would be the Buckeyes' coach at the start of next season regardless of how the playoffs shake out. "Absolutely," said Bjork, who came to Ohio State from the same role at Texas A&M in July. "Coach Day and I have just hit it off so well. I've been really, really impressed. Every single time I've talked to him, I've learned something. He's innovative. He recruits at the highest level. He's got a great staff. There's always tweaks. There was tweaks after last year, right? You're always going to tweak things. You're always going to make adjustments. You're always going to make improvements." Bjork continued by addressing the "championship or bust" attitude held by some of the fanbase. "This whole mentality about -- and look, we live it, and we sign up for it -- but if you get fixated on the end result and not have the process fully baked every time, you're going to lose," Bjork said. "The mindset's going to lose because you're only fixated on one thing. And so what we have to do is this whole ‘championship or bust' mentality, you want that as the goal, but it has to be about the process. "To me, we've got to maybe change some conversations a little bit. I think we need to maybe just approach things a little bit differently." Day is 66-10 as Ohio State's coach and led the Buckeyes to one national championship game appearance, a 52-24 loss to Alabama to cap the 2020 season. Ohio State went 10-2 in the regular season but missed out on a place in the Big Ten championship game when rival Michigan defeated the Buckeyes 13-10 on Nov. 30. It was Michigan's fourth straight win in The Game, and Day is now 1-4 as a head coach against the Wolverines. At the time, Bjork released a statement of support for Day, and he doubled down during Thursday's radio hit. "He's great to work with. He totally gets it. He loves being a Buckeye, and so we're going to support him at the highest level throughout," Bjork said. "But here's the thing too, and the reason why we needed to say something after that game is we're still breathing. They're still alive. The season's not over. The book is not closed, right? And so we've got to have confidence. I mean, Ohio State should be confident every single day. We're Ohio State. "But we also have to make sure we stay to our values and we stick to what we believe in. And so to me, it's the process as much as it is about the end result." --Field Level MediaIn the Shadow of Fists and the Gleam of Swords: Wang Xijing's New Series of Chinese Martial Arts Paintings 11-22-2024 10:52 PM CET | Business, Economy, Finances, Banking & Insurance Press release from: Getnews / PR Agency: Press Release Agency Following the success of his previous series on African figures, dancers, and opera characters, artist Wang Xijing has launched a new collection dedicated to Chinese martial arts figures, presenting a fresh and original viewpoint. Each time I observe his work, I am impressed by the depth of his concentration and commitment. His series are executed with remarkable skill and precision, showcasing his unwavering dedication to achieving artistic excellence. With years of experience in figure painting, Wang Xijing has consistently pursued a path of discovery and innovation, both in terms of subject matter and artistic style. He moves forward with confidence and assurance, continuously producing new works that are brimming with creative energy. Image: https://www.wdwire.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/image-57-1024x789.png Image: https://www.wdwire.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/image-58-1024x490.png The theme of Chinese martial arts, when presented as a series, results in paintings that are rich in content, featuring natural and lively forms, as well as bold and expressive brushwork. This is a unique accomplishment in the history of Chinese painting. Wang Xijing possesses a distinctive vision, recognizing the beauty within the intense and dynamic movements of martial arts, where the rhythm and harmony of form and speed are seamlessly integrated. He captures the transient beauty of these moments with the discerning eye and skilled hand of an artist, a true test of his artistic talent and ability to convey form. In my opinion, Wang Xijing has met this challenge with great success. Image: https://www.wdwire.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/image-59-1024x490.png Martial arts have always been a manifestation of humanity's fundamental ability to survive and protect themselves, a skill honed since ancient times. It represents the collective wisdom gained through the challenges of hunting for sustenance and competing with rival tribes. During the era of cold weapons, the development of unarmed combat and the use of various weapons led to the creation of techniques designed to counter these threats. Over time, these techniques evolved into the martial arts we recognize today, a concept not exclusive to any single culture but shared across many societies. However, China's unique historical depth, expansive land, diverse ethnic groups, and rich cultural legacy have allowed martial arts to flourish in distinct ways. The exchange of martial arts practices and experiences across different regions has given rise to numerous schools and styles, each with its own characteristics. These schools not only focus on the practical effectiveness of combat but also align with the body's natural capabilities. Guided by ancient philosophies, Chinese martial arts have developed a range of rational principles, such as advancing and retreating, speed and slowness, expansion and contraction, and hardness and softness, all aimed at achieving victory in the present moment. Moreover, the emphasis on flexibility and coordination in body movements has endowed Chinese martial arts with a unique aesthetic quality, where the harmony and rhythm of human motion are beautifully expressed. As society transitioned to the age of firearms and eventually modern weaponry, the importance of individual combat diminished. Nonetheless, martial arts continue to be a valuable skill for physical fitness and self-defense. Furthermore, the diversity of Chinese martial arts schools and the variety of weapons used have imbued it with an inherent aesthetic and performative quality, which has been integrated into the art of Chinese opera. As a result, martial arts performances are widely admired and cherished by the public. The exceptional abilities of highly skilled martial artists, who push the limits of human physicality to extraordinary levels, have fostered a sense of mystery and reverence for martial arts masters. This is often reflected in literature, particularly in martial arts novels, which have captivated the hearts of many readers. While Chinese martial arts also encompass profound theoretical foundations, I will not delve into these as I am not an expert. However, it is not an overstatement to consider martial arts as a significant branch of Chinese culture, and I hold it in the highest regard. Image: https://www.wdwire.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/image-60-1024x490.png The allure of martial arts lies not only in its dynamic movement and embodiment of health but also in the powerful fusion of strength and speed. More importantly, it represents the spirited expression of the human soul and the beauty of a well-conditioned body. While spectators may be awed and inspired by martial arts performances, it is the artist's discerning eye that captures those ephemeral moments of beauty and brings them to life on the canvas. This ability is the result of a harmonious blend of the eye, heart, and hand, honed through years of diligent practice and training. The introduction of sketching and drawing techniques in the 20th century has significantly advanced the development of figure painting in China, and its positive impact is clear. Sketching and drawing hone the artist's visual and manual skills, while the practice of drawing from memory enhances their ability to conceptualize and recall images. Furthermore, the artist's imagination and creativity are not in conflict with their capacity for realistic representation, particularly in the realm of figure painting. Wang Xijing's accomplishments in this field, including his various series of character paintings, vividly demonstrate that an artist with innate talent, coupled with rigorous training and years of experience, can achieve remarkable heights in the pursuit of artistic excellence. It is undeniable that the pursuit of precision in form, often described as "vivid and lifelike," is not the sole criterion for evaluating a painting. Since the advent of photography in the 19th century, it has presented a formidable challenge to Western realism in art. Today, with the rapid progress of technology and the seemingly boundless capabilities of artificial intelligence, even the most skilled painters who can match machines in technical skill face a daunting challenge. In this context, Chinese figure painters possess distinct and enduring advantages. The emphasis on the spirit of free expression in Chinese painting, along with the unique aesthetic techniques of Chinese ink, grants Chinese artists greater freedom in their subjective expression and aesthetic choices. The unexpected joys that arise during the process of ink painting ensure that Chinese painting will continue to hold a significant place in the future of the art world. Image: https://www.wdwire.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/image-61-1024x490.png From this perspective, I find myself both appreciating and contemplating Wang Xijing's diverse series of figure paintings, particularly his works that depict martial artists. It is evident that the artist not only exhibits exceptional technical prowess but also captures the true essence of his subjects. Each piece seems to resonate with the breath of the warrior and the sound of air being swiftly sliced by hands or weapons. Wang Xijing, with his remarkable ability to shape forms, not only conveys the swift and dynamic beauty of martial arts movements but also delves into the depiction of the characters' inner emotions and spirit. The ancient adage "conveying the spirit through the eyes" and the emphasis on "a combination of form and spirit" set a high bar for figure painters. Reflecting on the works of the ancients, it is clear that achieving this is no simple task, and it is not something we should expect of contemporary artists. However, upon closer examination of Wang Xijing's paintings, the expressions in the eyes of his figures and the open-mouthed shouts truly capture the explosive burst of vitality in a martial artist. The challenge of achieving "a combination of form and spirit" in painting is significant, and I believe that Wang Xijing, with his training in sketching, has successfully met this challenge. On the other hand, Chinese painting requires the skillful manipulation and control of brush and ink to achieve the beauty of ink. Creating depth, lightness, dryness, and wetness on white raw paper, and expressing form and meaning freely, is even more challenging. However, the beauty of ink lies in these subtle and nuanced changes, which are the result of decades of refinement and practice by Chinese painters, as seen in the works of many veteran artists. It is commendable that Wang Xijing, despite having reached the respected status of an elder artist in terms of age and experience, has not only achieved the mature stage of "the person and the work both mature" (as described by Sun Guoting in "The Book of Calligraphy") but also maintains a vibrant creative passion. He continues to produce new works and steadily advances on his path toward the pinnacle of art. With the summit in sight, his future creations are highly anticipated. Sun Ke October 2024 Born in Xi'an, Shaanxi in August 1946, Wang Xijing is a member of the Chinese Painting Art Committee of the China Artists Association, the Vice President of the Chinese Painting Society, and the Vice Chairman of the Shaanxi Provincial Federation of Literary and Art Circles. He also serves as the Deputy Director of the Culture, History, and Study Committee of the Shaanxi Provincial Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, the Honorary Chairman of the Shaanxi Artists Association, and the President of the Shaanxi Chinese Painting Society. Additionally, he holds the position of Honorary Dean at the School of Art at Xi'an University of Architecture and Technology. He is a concurrent professor at several institutions, including the Chinese National Academy of Arts, Xi'an Jiaotong University, Northwest University, Yunnan University, and Xi'an Academy of Fine Arts. He has previously served as a member of the 12th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and as a deputy to the 9th and 10th National People's Congress. He holds the title of a national first-class artist and has been honored by the State Council as a "National Outstanding Expert". He has received numerous accolades, such as "Pioneer of the Chinese Era", "One of the Top Ten Most Influential New Figures of China's Reform", "Red Flag Figure of Shaanxi", "Industry Leader of Shaanxi", "Outstanding Communist Party Expert of Shaanxi", and "Model Worker". Over the past fifty years, he has published over 20,000 works in various domestic and international newspapers and magazines, and has released more than 500 collections of his works and essays. He has successfully held over 60 solo exhibitions in countries including the United States, France, Russia, Singapore, Malaysia, Japan, the United Kingdom, Thailand, and South Korea, as well as in regions such as Hong Kong, Taiwan, Macau, Shenzhen, Dalian, Beijing, Guangzhou, Zhengzhou, and Hefei. He has been appointed as a visiting professor at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts in Singapore, the Malaysian Institute of Art, and the Oriental Academy in Thailand. I don't know anything else about this. In 2000, Wang Xijing was awarded the "International Academy Award" and the "Order of Cultural Merit" by the Japanese government. In 2002, he won the "International Contribution Award" at the "Seoul International Art Exhibition" and the "Special Olympic Gold Medal" for the "Olympic Movement of the People's Republic of China". In 2003, he secured the Gold Award at the "International Art Festival Exhibition" in China, Japan, and Korea, as well as the "Special Award" at the "Beijing International Art Festival". In 2004, he created a large-scale work titled "Spring Tide" for the Chairman Mao Memorial Hall. In 2005, he was honored with the "Special Award" at the "French International Art Salon Exhibition". In 2008, he created a large-scale work titled "Assembly of Sages" for the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. In 2013, he created a large-scale work titled "Yellow River, Mother River" for the Great Hall of the People. In 2015, he created the monumental artwork "Picture of Taihua Mountain Amidst Rising Clouds" for the Tiananmen Rostrum and was awarded the "Knight of the Legion of Honor" by France in the same year. In 2016, he brought out "Picture of Radiant Autumn Glow" for the Central Military Commission Building. In 2018, he received the "Lifetime Achievement Award of the Autumn Salon in Paris", the "Sino-French Outstanding Cultural Ambassador Contribution Award", and the "Medal of Honorary Citizen of Paris, France". “Shocked” Strictly Come Dancing fans have said they are “gutted” as week 10 results have been leaked online, with some branding the decision as “a joke”. Newsquest will not reveal the details of which two celebrities found themselves in the bottom two since these results have not been verified (and to not spoil tonight's programme). During last night’s show (November 23), two couples found themselves at the top of the leaderboard, with the combined scores from their dance routines and points from the Samba-Thon. JLS star JB Gill and Love Island favourite Tasha Ghouri (along with their professional dance partners) ended the night with a score of 46 each. During their lively Charleston to Yes Sir! That’s My Baby by Firehouse Five Plus Two, JB flipped Lauren Oakley upside down and in a cartwheel spin and showed off his quick footwork before completing a series of dramatic lifts. Head judge Shirley Ballas thanked JB for bringing “so much joy” to the dance floor, while Craig Revel Horwood praised the routine as “pure class”. As the results show for Strictly is filmed on the same night as the rest of the show, but broadcast a day later, it allows people who are in the crowd for filming to know who is eliminated ahead of time. Due to this, the results were leaked on social media late last night and those who found out which celebrity left in week 10 “gasped” and claimed "wrong person to go". A post shared by BBC Strictly (@bbcstrictly) This person wrote on X: “oh i GASPED that’s so insane???” “No way what the hell,” tweeted another. “Shocked !! What the hell,” shared this account. Someone else added: “Noooo omg wrong person to go.” One fan posted: “Neither should have been in dance off. That's a shame.” Recommended reading: In agreement, a viewer commented: “Disgraceful neither should have been there!!!!” Others said they were “gutted for them” and “no way...this is a joke!!” The Strictly Come Dancing result show will air on Sunday, November 24 on BBC One and iPlayer at 7.20pm.

The Place next April will open the biggest expansion in its five-year history when it opens The Launchpad, a 50-unit apartment complex designed to provide permanent housing for youths until they can find somewhere to live themselves. Young adults ages 18-25 will sign one-year leases on apartments in the $20 million project on the west side of Colorado Springs, where they will receive help with education, employment and mental health so they remain self-sufficient, said Joey Macasero, grants and communications coordinator for The Place. The building will be staffed around the clock by direct care specialists, a case manager and a program manager, he said. “Tenants will receive support to re-enroll in school, get a GED (general educational development) certificate or seek higher education. We are already working with other organizations to provide health care, and they will have access to (a variety of) other resources,” Macasero said. “When a tenant signs a one-year lease at Launchpad, we expect they will be ready to be on their own,” but no one will be forced to leave when their lease expires. The Place now offers housing services to homeless youth ages 15-24, offering them a safe and stable place to live, through 70 housing units scattered across the Colorado Springs area as well as intensive case management for physical and mental health care, educational and employment support and development of family and life skills. The nonprofit agency will continue to operate its housing program after The Launchpad opens, Macasero said. The agency also sends its Outreach Team to places where homeless teens gather, such as Acacia and Dorchester parks, to develop rapport with youth, offer them needed supplies as well as case management services, Macasero said. The team tells youths they meet about the agency’s drop-in center near downtown Colorado Springs, where hot meals, showers, shelter, essential supplies and employment services are available. The Place operates an emergency overnight shelter that can accommodate up to 20 homeless young people and serves three meals daily. Shelter clients must arrive before the 7 p.m. curfew and most leave by 10 a.m. for work or to attend school, Macasero said. During the fiscal year ended Sept. 30, The Place helped 562 youth through its Outreach Team, drop-in center or emergency shelter. He said the largest share of financial help was spent on rental assistance for youth in the agency’s housing program. The Place is supported mostly from foundation grants and individual contributions — the agency’s largest fundraising event, the Off the Street Breakfast, attracted 962 participants in July. The Place became a separate nonprofit in 2019 after opening 19 years as part of Urban Peak, which provides similar services in the Denver area to give the local nonprofit more flexibility in addressing issues specific to Colorado Springs. The agency selected Becky Treece as its CEO in March from a field of 85 applicants; she had previously served as interim CEO and chief development officer for the organization and had worked for several other local nonprofits. “Between getting you a job, getting you your vital documents, getting you an ID, getting you transportation to doctor’s appointments, to getting you set up with a doctor, there are so many things that they (The Place) help with, more than just food and being somewhere you can actually be sheltered,” said Jasmine, a Place client.

The San Francisco 49ers claimed running back Israel Abanikanda off waivers from the New York Jets on Tuesday, one day after placing running backs Christian McCaffrey and Jordan Mason on injured reserve. The Jets released Abanikanda on Monday after adding Kene Nwangwu to the active roster. Nwagwu had been a practice-squad elevation for the Jets last Sunday against Seattle and returned a kickoff for a touchdown in the game. Abanikanda, 22, was a fifth-round draft pick by the Jets in 2023. After running 22 times for 70 yards and catching seven passes for 43 yards in six appearances as a rookie, Abanikanda did not play a regular-season game for New York in 2024, buried on the depth chart behind Breece Hall and others. When the Niners placed McCaffrey and Mason on IR, rookie Isaac Guerendo was left as the only healthy running back on their active roster. In Sunday night's loss at the Buffalo Bills, McCaffrey left the field in pain in the second quarter and was diagnosed with a posterior cruciate ligament injury in his right knee. Mason also suffered a high ankle sprain in the game. McCaffrey was playing in just his fourth game of the season after missing the first eight because of Achilles tendinitis in both legs. He was the NFL Offensive Player of the Year last season, when he led the league with 2,023 yards from scrimmage: a league-leading 1,459 rushing yards and 14 touchdowns plus 67 catches for 564 yards and seven scores. Mason is the leading rusher for San Francisco (5-7) this season with 789 yards and three touchdowns on 153 carries. It was his third season in the league. --Field Level Media49ers claim RB Israel Abanikanda off waivers from Jets

Read unlimited articles for free today: Already have an account? SEATTLE (AP) — The Seattle Seahawks took a bumpy path to sole possession of first place in the NFC West. Sunday’s 26-21 win over the Jets featured several special teams miscues, including a 99-yard kickoff return for a touchdown by New York. On the flip side, the Seahawks got their second pick-6 in as many weeks and just enough production by Geno Smith and the offense. The Seahawks’ uneven performance was characteristic of a season in which they started 3-0, then lost five of six before winning another three in a row to take command of their underachieving division. Seattle (7-5) leads Arizona by one game, with a matchup against the Cardinals looming next weekend. Zach Charbonnet gave Seattle its first lead of the day on an 8-yard touchdown run with 5:37 to go, and the Seahawks’ defense capped another strong outing with a game-sealing stop on fourth down. After a sack by Leonard Williams gave the Jets a fourth-and-15 at the 34-yard line, Aaron Rodgers threw a desperation pass to Garrett Wilson that fell incomplete, giving Seattle the ball with 33 seconds left. What’s working Williams is on a tear. After losing out on NFC defensive player of the week honors last week to teammate Coby Bryant despite 2 1/2 sacks and four quarterback hits, “Big Cat” had an even better game. Williams finished with two sacks, three tackles for loss, a 92-yard interception return for a touchdown that was the longest pick-6 in NFL history by a defensive lineman, and a blocked extra point. The touchdown was the first of Williams’ career. He became the first player since 1982 with multiple sacks, an interception return for a touchdown and a blocked kick in a game. Maybe this week the league will agree he was the NFC’s best defender. What needs help The special teams could not have been much worse in the first half. The Seahawks fumbled three kickoffs, losing two, and allowed Kene Nwangwu’s 99-yard kickoff return for a TD. Dee Williams fumbled on a kickoff in the first quarter to give New York the ball at the 27-yard line, and four plays later, Rodgers hit Isaiah Davis for a touchdown to give the Jets a 14-0 lead. Laviska Shenault Jr. muffed two kicks and fumbled at the Seattle 38-yard line in the second quarter. Seattle also had an extra point blocked. Stock up Smith led his third game-winning drive of the season and his 11th since he became Seattle’s starting quarterback in 2022. Facing the team that drafted him in 2013, Smith went 20 of 31 for 206 yards and a touchdown. For the first time in five weeks, he was not intercepted. The Seahawks trailed by 14 points on two occasions, but Smith brought Seattle back while avoiding the untimely picks that dogged him recently. He threw a 12-yard touchdown pass to A.J. Barner in the second quarter, and led the Seahawks on a go-ahead nine-play, 71-yard touchdown drive late in the fourth quarter. Stock down Coach Mike Macdonald and his staff have to address the problem with their kick returners, Shenault and Dee Williams. Two lost fumbles and several muffs could have easily cost Seattle the game. Injuries WR DK Metcalf left the game briefly with a knee issue but returned. ... P Michael Dickson was unavailable in the fourth quarter because of back spasms. Key number 38 — The Seahawks decided to go for it on fourth-and-6 at their own 33-yard line with 9:34 left in the game. A primary reason was that Dickson was unavailable to punt because of back spasms. Winnipeg Jets Game Days On Winnipeg Jets game days, hockey writers Mike McIntyre and Ken Wiebe send news, notes and quotes from the morning skate, as well as injury updates and lineup decisions. Arrives a few hours prior to puck drop. The Jets were flagged for having 12 men on the field after sending a punt returner out, which gave Seattle fourth-and-1 at the 38. The Seahawks got a first down after Jets cornerback Quantez Stiggers was flagged for pass interference on Metcalf, and eight players later, Charbonnet scored to put Seattle ahead. Without going for it on fourth down from their own 38, the Seahawks likely would’ve lost. Up next The Seahawks will seek a season sweep of the Cardinals. ___ AP NFL: https://apnews.com/hub/nfl Advertisement Advertisement

Sydney Punchard Email: Sydney.Punchard@blackrock.comThe move could usher in an end to a protracted political crisis in the European Union country following the annulment of a presidential election by a top court. Parliament approved the new administration in a 240-143 vote in Romania’s 466-seat legislature. The new coalition is made up of the leftist Social Democratic Party (PSD) the centre-right National Liberal Party (PNL), the small ethnic Hungarian UDMR party and national minorities. It caps a month-long period of turmoil in which far-right nationalists made significant gains in a parliamentary election on December 1 a week after a first-round presidential race saw the far-right outsider Calin Georgescu emerge as the front-runner. “It will not be an easy mandate for the future government,” Mr Ciolacu, whose PSD party topped the polls in the parliamentary election, said in a statement. “We are aware that we are in the midst of a deep political crisis,” he said. “It is also a crisis of trust, and this coalition aims to regain the trust of citizens, the trust of the people.” Romania’s 16 ministerial positions will be shared among the parties, which will hold a slim majority in the legislature. It is widely seen as a tactical partnership to shut out far-right nationalists whose voices found fertile ground amid high living costs and a sluggish economy. Mr Ciolacu, who came third in the first-round presidential ballot despite polls indicating he would win the most votes, has served as prime minister since June 2023. After parliament’s approval, President Klaus Iohannis swore in the new government and warned the new Cabinet that it is entering a “difficult new period” in which “for many Romanians, there are major concerns”. Romania was plunged into turmoil after Mr Georgescu’s surprise success in the presidential race, after allegations of electoral violations and Russian interference emerged. Days before the December 8 run-off, the Constitutional Court made the unprecedented move to annul the presidential race. “We go through complicated times, but I think we all learned from mistakes of the past,” Mr Ciolacu said. “I hope that together with my colleagues in the coalition, we’ll find the best solutions to get past the challenges we have in front of us.” Mr Ciolacu said that the new government would aim to quickly organise the rerun of the presidential election in which the new coalition has agreed to put forward an agreed common pro-European candidate. Cristian Andrei, a political consultant based in Bucharest, said that the new government made up of the same political parties will likely embrace “soft populist” rhetoric such as economic patriotism, anti-austerity, and a peace solution in neighbouring Ukraine to counter the rise of far-right populism. “This will be a way to answer the concerns of many Romanians who voted for populists... but will not solve the fundamental problem of trust,” he said. “The only decisive factor now will be who and how convincing the pro-European candidates will be against this popular revolt.” George Simion, the leader of the far-right Alliance for the Unity of Romanians, which came second in the parliamentary election, said that all politicians from his party on Monday would vote against the Ciolacu government. In 2021, the PSD and the PNL also formed an unlikely but increasingly strained coalition together with UDMR, which exited the Cabinet last year after a power-sharing dispute.Greece's former royal family expresses 'deep emotion' after reclaiming citizenship - 50 years on from being forced into exile when the monarchy was abolished Members of Greece 's former royal family have applied for Greek citizenship READ MORE: Greek royal family hold a private thanksgiving service for the life of King Constantine a day after Windsor service led by Queen Camilla By ELEANOR DYE and GINA KALSI Published: 20:15, 23 December 2024 | Updated: 20:16, 23 December 2024 e-mail 3 View comments Members of Greece 's former royal family expressed 'deep emotion' on Monday following the decision to reinstate their citizenship. The late King Constantine II and his family members were stripped of Greek citizenship in 1994 in a dispute with the government over formerly royal property and over claims that he refused to renounce any right to the Greek throne for his descendants. The Greek monarchy was abolished by referendum in December 1974, when voters overwhelmingly backed a republican constitution, months after the fall of a seven-year military dictatorship. The exiled royals then lived in England for many years. In a decision published in the government gazette, dated Friday, citizenship was granted to 10 members of the former royal family. They include the five children of the late king and former Queen Anne-Marie as well as to five of their grandchildren. The royal family's statement was shared by Crown Prince Pavlos - Constantine's eldest son - to his Instagram account and was posted in both Greek and English. The official statement read: 'It is with deep emotion that, after 30 years, we hold the Greek citizenship again. The law of 1994 deprived us of our citizenship, rendering us stateless with all that this entails in terms of individual rights and great emotional distress. 'Our father and our family fully respected the result of the 1974 referendum. Pictured: Crown Princess Marie-Chantal, Crown Prince Pavlos and Maria Olympia in 2018 Citizenship was granted to the five children of the late king and former Queen Anne-Marie (pictured in September) as well as to five of their grandchildren 'However, the provision of the 1994 law on citizenship, a result of the political status at the time, was not befitting of a former head of the Greek state and an institution that served the country faithfully. The passing of our father marked the end of an era.' Constantine's five children are Alexia, 58; Pavlos, 56; Nikolaos, 54; Theodora, 40; and Philippos, 37. Pavlos' five children were also granted citizenship: Maria-Olympia, 27; Constantine-Alexios, 25; Achileas-Andreas, 23; Odysseas-Kimon, 19; and Aristidis-Stavros, 15. 'After 50 years since democracy's restoration, we have a strong democracy and protected constitution that can defend itself, with laws that apply without any footnotes or exceptions,' government spokesman Pavlos Marinakis said Friday before the decision was published. Interior Ministry official Athanasios Balerpas said that relatives of the late king, who died last year at the age of 82, signed a declaration on Thursday acknowledging the republican government. They are also adopting a new surname, 'De Grece' - which is French for 'of Greece'. Members of the royal family lived in exile for decades before Constantine returned as a private citizen in his seventies. They were stripped of their Greek citizenship in 1994 during a legal battle over the former royal estate, which is now state-owned. They had previously refused to adopt a surname, distancing themselves from the name Glucksburg, assigned in a 1994 law, which they saw as linking them too closely to their German ancestry and making them seem less legitimately Greek. Princess Theodora - who recently got married in July - has reportedly requested Greek citizenship The full statement was posted on the Greek Royal Family's website on Monday Prince Philippos is pictured with his wife Nina Flohr celebrating the wedding of Theodora of Greece and Matthew Now that the decision has been published in the official government gazette, they can apply for state identity cards and Greek passports. Some politicians from centre-left and left-wing opposition parties objected to the surname chosen by the former royal family members, arguing it sounds like a title rather than a standard surname, but did not oppose their right to citizenship. Mr Balerpas said on the state-run radio station: 'A historically pending matter is being resolved. 'Let's look to the future now. I think it's a good moment because it closes an account from the past and we can now look forward as a people.' The family got together at the end of September to celebrate Princess Theodora's wedding to LA-based lawyer, Matthew Kumar. The couple had a four-year delay in tying the knot, but finally had a lavish ceremony at the Metropolitan Cathedral of Athens. Theodora is the goddaughter of the late Queen Elizabeth II and has close ties to both the Danish and Spanish royal families. The Prince of Wales was King Constantine's godson. Several members of the latter households, including the bride's paternal aunt Queen Sofia of Spain and her maternal aunt Princess Benedikte of Denmark, as well as the Greek Royal Family, attended the glittering occasion a couple of months ago. King Charles and Queen Camilla missed the nuptials as they were in Scotland for the 25th anniversary of Parliament at the time. However, in October 2021, when Theodora's brother Prince Philippos of Greece married Nina Flohr, the daughter of a billionaire, both Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie were in attendance, as well as Beatrice's husband Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi. The Greek royals suffered heartache earlier this year when Prince Michael of Greece and Denmark, who was Prince Philip 's first cousin, died at the age of 85 in July. Prince Michael was the last remaining grandson of George I with a lineage to the House of Bourbon through his mother's side of the family. Pictured in November 2023 He was well known for his devotion to his wife Marina Karella and his turbulent personal life which saw him tragically lose his father at the age of just one. Prince Michael had to give up his rights to the Greek throne to marry Marina in 1965 as despite being an acclaimed painter and sculptor, she was not a member of the royal family . Their marriage took two years to negotiate, with Michael forced to give up his rights to the Greek throne in order to marry a commoner. But when they did tie the knot on February 7, 1965, at the Royal Palace in Athens it was an event to be remembered, with the guest list including Queen Frederica, King Constantine, Queen Anna-Maria and, the Count and Countess of Paris. He later said he 'didn't hesitate' to give away his birthright for love, adding that by doing so it 'gave me a sense of freedom' and meant he was no longer beholden to the Royal Family, allowing him to choose his own profession. 'It was love at first sight – it has never, ever changed,' he said, adding: 'Now we are married 58 years ... Marina and my country Greece are the same.' Pressure is on the Albanese government to make headway on its long list of stalled legislation before the federal election. Housing will be back in spotlight during the final sitting week of 2024, with the Help to Buy government equity scheme and incentives for build-to-rent to be brought to a final vote in the Senate. The two housing bills have struggled to attract the support of the opposition or the Greens, with Labor knocking back fresh demands from the latter. Central to the Greens’ updated position is funding for 25,000 “shovel-ready” homes not given the go-ahead under the first round of the Housing Australia Future Fund. Labor insists the demand is unlawful and would result in the construction of million-dollar homes that are not value for money. Greens housing spokesman Max Chandler-Mather said his party had designed “a compromise offer that is popular, achievable and easy to accept, it requires no new legislation and sits broadly within government policy”. With 30 or so bills still before the parliament, the government has been ramping up pressure on the Greens and the coalition to co-operate. “This is a week where we will see the colour of the eyes of Peter Dutton and the Greens party,” Employment Minister Murray Watt told reporters on Sunday. A friendless crackdown on misinformation and disinformation has been shelved and gambling reforms have been pushed into next year. Though the government is expecting wins on its aged care reforms and its social media age limit, with the former expected to attract opposition support. Under world-first legislation, Australians younger than 16 will be banned from social media platforms including Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Reddit and X (formerly Twitter). Labor will also be spruiking its Future Made in Australia plan, with its hydrogen and critical minerals production tax incentives to be introduced to parliament on Monday. Economic management will likely get some airtime after monthly inflation figures are released on Wednesday, with headline inflation expected to once again land within the Reserve Bank of Australia’s target band. But with the central bank’s preferred underlying gauge – stripped of the volatility inflicting the headline number – likely to remain above the two-three per cent band, keenly-anticipated interest rate cuts are likely to stay on ice. The Green Bay Packers might be the best third-place team in NFL history. The Packers can’t win the division despite an 11-4 record, because the Detroit Lions or Minnesota Vikings are each 13-2 and one of them has to win (or they tie) when they meet in Week 18. But the Packers are on the short list of teams that can win a Super Bowl. Green Bay didn’t have a tough challenge on Monday night against a depleted New Orleans Saints team, but they did what elite teams do and thoroughly dominated a bad team. The Packers scored touchdowns on each of their first three drives and it was practically over after that. A Saints team that had Spencer Rattler, Kendre Miller and Foster Moreau as their top playmakers wasn’t coming back from a 21-0 hole. Green Bay throttled down in the second half and cruised to a 34-0 win. The Packers' shutout was the first in the NFL this season. The Saints came in having been shut out just once in their previous 369 games, according to ESPN. The Packers have been good all season. They haven’t lost to a team all season with worse than a 12-3 record. They’ve just been overshadowed in their own division. But with QB Jordan Love looking as healthy and sharp as he has all season, and Josh Jacobs on a tear scoring touchdowns, the Packers aren’t a team anyone will want to face, even if they’re a No. 6 seed in the NFC. It’s sad watching the Saints late this season. Against Green Bay they were without Derek Carr, Alvin Kamara, Chris Olave, Rashid Shaheed and Taysom Hill on offense. It’s hard to compete while missing that many key players on one side of the ball. On Monday night, the Saints looked like a team that was not enjoying the Lambeau Field cold, knew it couldn’t compete and just wanted to get things over as soon as possible. There were some clock management issues at the end of the first half. The Saints were slow to call a timeout with less than a minute left, then lost 24 seconds when they didn’t realize the clock was running after a fumble out of bounds. That’s on interim coach Darren Rizzi. Then Spencer Rattler took a 14-yard sack when he held the ball too long, which cost New Orleans a chance to at least get a field goal. Not that the mishandling of timeouts mattered much. The Packers were up 21-0 with more than six minutes left in the second quarter. There’s no mercy rule in football, but the only thing keeping the Saints from getting beat by 50 was that Packers coach Matt LaFleur had no reason to rub it in. The Packers’ offense has been adjusting as the season has gone on. They seem to have finally settled on their identity. Love has been good but he hasn’t been a high-volume passer lately. The Packers are funneling a lot through Jacobs, who scored again Monday. He has a touchdown in six straight games. Love is perfectly capable when the Packers need to lean on him, especially now that he looks completely over some early-season injuries. He was 12 of 18 for 127 yards in the first half on Monday night. Josh Jacobs' weekly routine: 1. Get dressed 2. Score TDs 📺: on ESPN/ABC 📱: Stream on — NFL (@NFL) Green Bay is mostly tuning up for the playoffs, since the only real intrigue left for the Packers is what wild-card seed they end up with. It’s helping, because as each week passes the Packers look more and more like a serious threat in the NFC. The Packers weren’t really tested on Monday. The Saints are nowhere near a playoff-level team. But Green Bay has been showing the past few weeks that it's capable of beating anyone in the NFL. The Packers stopped the Saints one last time and finished the game in victory formation to complete the 34-0 shutout, the first in the NFL this season. With the win, Green Bay has clinched a wild-card berth at 11-4 with two weeks remaining in the regular season. A dominant effort on both sides of the ball secures Green Bay's fifth playoff berth in six seasons. Tough to see. Saints guard Lucas Patrick went down in pain in the throes of garbage time. Held his left knee after contact and was eventually able to limp off the field. With Malik Willis at QB, the Packers added another touchdown on a seven-play, 48-yard drive for a 34-0 lead. Emanuel Wilson punches it in from 1 yard. Nine Packers players have carried the ball for 191 yards and three touchdowns on 5.1 yards per carry. The only flaw on that last drive: Green Bay left 2:41 on the game clock. Emmanuel Wilson finds the end zone! The Saints just failed to convert on fourth down, and backup quarterback Malik Willis has replaced Packers starter Jordan Love. Green Bay leads, 27-0 with 5:44 remaining and the ball. The Packers extend their lead to 27-0 with a 46-yard field goal. 7:13 remains in regulation. Packers fans are feeling it — and not adhering to protocol. Earlier, the wave broke out. Now, they break out a "Bears still suck" chant. Both times with Green Bay on offense. Loud "Bears still suck" chant breaks out and the stadium PA tells fans to keep quiet while the Packers are on offense. — Matt Schneidman (@mattschneidman) The Packers have the ball back after a Saints punt with a 24-0 lead and a clear mission: Run the clock. Packers running back Josh Jacobs has remained on the sideline after a hot start. No reports of an injury. Makes sense for Green Bay to rest their starting running back in a blowout. Eight different players have carried the ball for the Packers tonight. The Packers failed to gain a first down near midfield, and the Saints will go for their first points on a drive starting from their own 34. The third quarter's over, and the Packers have a 24-0 lead and the ball heading into the fourth. Will they keep their shutout intact? Everything continues to go wrong for the Saints. Their best drive of the night (to the Green Bay 22) ends with a Spencer Rattler interception to Zayne Anderson near the end zone. Green Bay keeps the shutout intact and takes over with a 24-0 lead at its own 20. A pick! 📺: on ESPN/ABC 📱: Stream on — NFL (@NFL) Packers receiver Christian Watson returned to the game after a first-half visit to the sideline medical tent. But Green Bay is now listing him as questionable with a knee injury. Here's guessing that his night is done in a blowout. WR Christian Watson has a knee injury and is questionable to return. — Green Bay Packers (@packers) Brandon McManus is good on a 60-yard field goal extend Green Bay's lead to 24-0. The only drama left in this one is whether or not the shutout holds. New Orleans punts after gaining 14 yards on its the first possession of the third quarter. New Orleans is still seeking to crack the scoreboard. The Saints have the ball to start the second half. Will they score this time — or at all, tonight? This is about as dominant as one NFL team looks against another. Jordan Love: 12 of 18, 127 yards, 1 touchdown, 0 turnovers Spencer Rattler: 4 of 8, 56 yards, 0 touchdowns, 1 lost fumble Josh Jacobs: 10 carries for 53 yards; 4 catches for 38 yards, 1 touchdown Kendre Miller: 5 carries for 12 yards Tucker Kraft: 3 catches for 63 yards Foster Moreau: 2 catches for 33 yards Packers total yards: 222 on 6.2 yards per play Saints total yards: 81 on 3.5 yards per play Packers first downs: 15 Saints first downs: 6 Packers turnovers: 0 Saints turnovers: 1 Saints head coach Darren Rizzi was not aware that the game clock restarts after a fumble out of bounds. Saints receiver Kevin Austin Jr. fumbled out of bounds after a gain to the Green Bay 34 with 39 seconds left in the half. Officials stopped the clock, then started it again after the ball was put back in play, as they're supposed to. The Saints apparently expected the clock to remain stopped and didn't call one of their two remaining timeouts until 15 seconds remained on the game clock. Spencer Rattler took a sack on the next play, and the Saints came away scoreless after a Hail Mary on third-and-22 hit the turf. A terrible half of Saints football ends in complete mismanagement with Green Bay leading, 21-0. The Saints also wasted a bunch of time earlier in the drive that started with 1:49 remaining in the half. Complete mismanagement by New Orleans. Rizzi eplained the gaffe to ESPN as a "miscommunication with officials" on his way to the halftime locker room. The Packers just punted after scoring touchdowns on each of their first three drives. The Saints have a chance to salvage some respectability with the ball back inside the 2-minute warning. Packers wide receiver Christian Watson is back on the field after spending some time in the sideline medical tent.60 Years Before Wicked, a Movie Musical That Made Your Eyes Sing

TOWSON, Md. (AP) — Tyler Tejada scored 18 points as Towson beat Bryant 70-65 on Sunday. Tejada had five rebounds for the Tigers (5-8). For more than a decade, the United States has sought to keep out of Syria's political debacle, seeing no viable partner. Islamist rebels' toppling of strongman Bashar al-Assad has forced a change of tune -- and a debate over just what US interests are. Donald Trump, who returns to the White House in little more than a month, on the eve of Assad's fall called Syria "a mess" and stated in his plain-speaking style that the United States should not be involved. Joe Biden's administration, after putting Syria on the backburner in a turbulent region, has offered a tacit rebuttal by stating that clear US interests are at stake -- including preventing Syria from fragmenting and avoiding a resurgence of the Islamic State extremist group. Steven Cook, a senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations, said Trump's and Biden's statements could be combined and "together they make a kind of decent policy." The United States needs to address real concerns about the Islamic State group and Al-Qaeda but "as far as getting involved in arranging the politics of Syria, I think that no good can come from it," Cook said. Since the presidency of Barack Obama, the United States has walked a fine line on Syria that critics often derided as a non-policy. The United States questioned the legitimacy of Assad, demanding accountability for brutality in one of the 21st century's deadliest wars, but stopped short of prioritizing his departure due to suspicions about the main rebels. The Islamist movement Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), which has now led Assad's ouster, traces its roots to Syria's Al-Qaeda branch and is considered a terrorist organization by the United States. Since Obama's time, the United States instead has allied itself in Syria with a smaller fighting force of the Kurdish minority -- over strenuous objections of neighboring Turkey, which backs HTS -- with a narrow mission to counter the Islamic State group. Some 900 US troops remain in Syria. Assad fell in a lighting surprise offensive as his protector Russia is bogged down in its invasion of Ukraine and after Israel's military heavily degraded Assad's other key supporters -- Iran and Lebanese militia Hezbollah. Robert Ford, the last US ambassador to Syria, helped spearhead the terrorist designation of HTS in 2012 but said that the group since then has not attacked US or Western targets and has instead fought Al-Qaeda and Islamic State forces. Ford also pointed with hope to post-victory statements by rebel chief Abu Mohammed al-Jolani, including welcoming international monitoring of any chemical weapons that are discovered. "Can you imagine Osama bin Laden saying that?" said Ford, now a senior fellow at the Middle East Institute. "I'm not saying 'trust Jolani.' He's obviously authoritarian. He's obviously an Islamist who doesn't believe that Christians have an equal right to power as Muslims. But I sure as hell want to test him on some of these things," Ford said. He said that the United States should encourage HTS, as well as other Syrian actors, to reach out and reassure the country's diverse communities including Christians, Kurds and Alawites -- the sect of the secular-oriented Assad. Beyond that, Washington should take a back-seat and let Syrians sort out their future, he said. "We should learn from the experience in Iraq that trying to impose exiles on a population traumatized by a brutal dictatorship and war is not a recipe for success," Ford said. Outgoing Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Tuesday offered US recognition to a future government that is "credible, inclusive and non-sectarian." Trump in his first term, at the urging of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, abruptly said he would pull troops out of Syria. He backtracked after intense criticism at home and appeals from French President Emmanuel Macron, who pointed to the risk of Islamic State filling the vacuum. Trump has not indicated how he would change Syria policy this time. But he has shown no reluctance in the past to negotiate with foreign adversaries on the US blacklist, from Afghanistan's Taliban to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said there was no legal restriction on US contact with designated terrorists, although he indicated there was no direct dialogue with HTS. Natasha Hall, a senior fellow at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, said Syria could face "devastating economic and humanitarian consequences" unless the United States reconsiders the terrorist designation of HTS, which impedes aid groups. "That said," she said, "if there isn't sort of an established framework for negotiations and good behavior now, before that designation is lifted, that could potentially also be a major mistake down the line for Syria's future." sct/smsPHOENIX — Like it was for much of the 2024 season, Rutgers will be short-handed for its final game of the campaign. Between multiple injuries, three transfers and one opt-out, the Scarlet Knights (7-5, 4-5) will be down more than one dozen players for their meeting with Kansas State (8-4, 5-4) at the Rate Bowl on Thursday. The Big Ten did not release an availability report for Rutgers, but here is what NJ Advance Media noticed during pregame preparation: Rutgers will be without starting cornerback Eric Rogers and one-time starting safety Desmond Igbinosun. The secondary members were not dressed during warm-ups, wearing street clothes as they cheered their teammates on. Star running back Kyle Monangai, an NFL draft hopeful, opted out of playing in the game, but he will be on the sideline coaching his teammates alongside position coach Damiere Shaw. He helped coach the unit in warm-ups as well. Of course, Rutgers will be without the multiple players who suffered season-ending injuries earlier this season — including tight ends Kenny Fletcher and Logan Blake, left guard Bryan Felter, running back Samuel Brown and linebackers Mohamed Toure and Abram Wright — and those who transferred out during the transfer portal window, including defensive end Wesley Bailey, safety Thomas Amankwaa and wide receiver Chris Long. Rutgers will look to remain undefeated against the Wildcats in what is their second-ever meeting. The Scarlet Knights previously defeated Kansas State, 37-10, in the 2006 Texas Bowl. No matter who is on the field, the Wildcats expect a fight. “(When I think of Rutgers), I think of a well-coached, physical discipline team,” Kansas State coach Chris Klieman said earlier this week at Rate Bowl media day. “I think it’s a great challenge, and I think it’s fun.” Thank you for relying on us to provide the journalism you can trust. President Joe Biden plans to formally block the $14.1 billion sale of United States Steel Corp. to Nippon Steel Corp. on national security grounds once the deal is referred back to him later this month, people familiar with the matter said. The Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States panel, which has been reviewing the proposed takeover for much of this year, must refer its decision to Biden by Dec. 22 or 23, said the people, who asked to not to be identified discussing a confidential process. It’s not clear exactly what the CFIUS review will say. However, any referral to the president suggests at least one member of the panel sees the deal posing a risk. Nippon Steel and US Steel are poised to pursue litigation over the process if Biden decides to block the merger, some of the people said. The White House and Treasury Department declined to comment. “This transaction should be approved on its merits,” US Steel spokeswoman Amanda Malkowski said. Shares of the company were halted for volatility after falling 8.8% in New York. “It is inappropriate that politics continue to outweigh true national security interests — especially with the indispensable alliance between the US and Japan as the important foundation,” Nippon Steel said in a statement. “Nippon Steel still has confidence in the justice and fairness of America and its legal system, and — if necessary — will work with US Steel to consider and take all available measures to reach a fair conclusion.” The fate of the once-fabled US steelmaker has become a hot political issue since the company reached an agreement to be taken over by its Japanese suitor almost a year ago. US Steel has said the deal represents a lifeline and warned it may move its headquarters out of Pennsylvania and shutter some operations if the merger collapses. Biden — born in US Steel’s home state of Pennsylvania — has long signaled opposition to the sale, and has said the company would remain domestically owned. At the same time, he has stopped short of a pledge to kill the deal, while President-Elect Donald Trump has promised repeatedly to block it. The CFIUS process was extended in September with a procedural maneuver. That pushed the referral deadline to this month and raised questions about whether the deal might proceed after the election, even as Biden dug in. “I haven’t changed my mind,” he said Sept. 27. The powerful United Steelworkers union has also opposed the deal. Vice President Kamala Harris echoed Biden’s stance during her campaign as the Democratic nominee in the presidential election. It’s unusual for CFIUS to reject acquisitions by entities based in a friendly nation such as Japan. The exact timing of any announcement from Biden is unclear. The president has 15 days from the referral to announce a decision. Another extension to the CFIUS process — which would punt a decision to the next administration — isn’t expected, some of the people said. Arizona (7-8) at Los Angeles Rams (9-6) Saturday, 8:15 p.m. EST, NFL Network BetMGM : Rams by 6 1/2. Against the spread: Cardinals 9-6; Rams 8-7. Series record: Rams lead 50-41-2. Last meeting: Cardinals beat Rams 41-10 in Glendale, Ariz. on Sept. 15. Last week: Cardinals lost to Carolina 36-30, OT; Rams beat New York Jets 19-9. Cardinals offense: overall (11), rush (5), pass (20), scoring (14). Cardinals defense: overall (20), rush (22), pass (13), scoring (T-13). Rams offense: overall (15), rush (20), pass (13), scoring (17). Rams defense: overall (24), rush (25), pass (19), scoring (21). Turnover differential: Cardinals minus-4; Rams plus-5. Cardinals player to watch WR Marvin Harrison Jr. has had a relatively productive rookie season with 51 catches for 726 yards and seven touchdowns. But it’s also true that he hasn’t always looked like the true franchise changing force the Cardinals expected when they took him with the No. 4 overall pick. Arizona might be out of the playoff race, but Harrison’s development continues to be a major focus for the team down the stretch. Rams player to watch RB Kyren Williams is coming off his best game of the season after rushing for 122 yards and a touchdown on 23 carries to help Los Angeles grind out a win at the Meadowlands. He hardly factored into the first meeting against Arizona, a game the Rams trailed 14-0 halfway into the first quarter and 24-3 at halftime, getting 12 carries and running for 25 yards and a touchdown behind a battered offensive line. Key matchup Cardinals QB Kyler Murray vs. Rams defensive line. Los Angeles had no answers for Murray in September as he threw for 266 yards and three touchdowns without an interception and added 59 yards rushing. But their defensive front is much more cohesive than it was in the second week of the season, with rookies Jared Verse and Braden Fiske proving to be menaces in the backfield. If Murray feels that pressure and can’t keep his eyes downfield, the Rams will be in much better shape to limit Arizona’s passing game. Key injuries The Cardinals have been beat up over the past two games. Both of the starting tackles — Paris Johnson Jr. (knee) and Jonah Williams (knee) — are out for the season after they were put on injured reserve this week. Others such as RB James Conner (knee), LB Baron Browning (neck), LB Mack Wilson Sr. (concussion) and DL Darius Robinson (calf) have been limited during practice. ... The Rams are in good shape, a far cry from where they were to start the season. RT Rob Havenstein was the only name on their injury report through Wednesday, when he was limited because of a shoulder injury. Series notes Arizona has not swept the season series since 2014 when the Rams were playing in St. Louis. ... The Rams and Cardinals have split the past four meetings. Arizona had dropped 11 of the previous 12 in the series. ... Los Angeles is 3-2 against Arizona since moving into SoFi Stadium in 2020, kickstarting its run to the Super Bowl after the 2021 season with a 34-11 win in an NFC wild-card game. Stats and stuff The Cardinals have lost four of their past five games and were eliminated from the playoff race after last week’s 36-30 loss to the Carolina Panthers. The Cardinals have made the playoffs just once over the past nine seasons. That was in 2021 ... Harrison had four catches for 130 yards and two TDs vs. the Rams in Week 2. All of that production came in the span of seven plays in the first quarter. ... The Cardinals are No. 5 in the NFL with 145.8 yards rushing per game. They also rank No. 2 with 5.28 yards per carry. ... Chad Ryland has made 25 field goals since his debut in Week 5, which ranks fourth in the NFL over that span. ... Safety Budda Baker has a career-high 148 tackles this season, which broke his previous high of 147 set in 2019. ... James Conner has 1,500 yards from scrimmage this season, including 1,090 rushing and 410 receiving. ... Trey McBride has caught 91 passes this season, which is a franchise record at tight end for the Cardinals. ... The Rams can clinch a playoff spot with a win and either a Seahawks loss or tie or a series of results elsewhere to secure the strength of victory tiebreaker. ... Rams QB Matthew Stafford threw for 110 yards against the Jets. Los Angeles has won all four games this season where Stafford has finished with fewer than 200 yards through the air. ... WR Puka Nacua had a record-setting rookie season, but Arizona was the one team that kept him in check. Nacua made four catches in each of the two meetings in 2023, finishing with 26 and 27 yards. ... The Rams didn’t have LT Alaric Jackson (suspension), LG Steve Avila (knee) or Nacua (knee) in the Week 2 game against the Cardinals. ... Los Angeles has run for at least 132 yards in four straight games, with Williams accounting for at least 87 yards in each outing that span. Fantasy tip Cooper Kupp likely sank many a fantasy title push with his limited production over the past month, and the Rams WR should remain on benches this week for any owners still in the mix. Kupp has topped 44 yards receiving once in his past five games against Arizona. ___ AP NFL: The Associated Press

US sex-abuse watchdog fires investigator after learning of his arrest for stealing drug money DENVER (AP) — The U.S. Center for SafeSport abruptly fired one of its investigators last month after learning he’d been arrested for stealing money confiscated after a drug bust he was part of during his previous job as a police officer. Jason Krasley left his job with the Allentown Police Department in Pennsylvania in 2021 and was hired by the Denver-based SafeSport center to look into sensitive cases involving sex abuse and harassment. The center said it conducts multiple interviews and a “comprehensive background check” of potential employees. The center said it was looking into cases Krasley handled to make sure they were dealt with appropriately. Jim Larrañaga steps down at Miami, Bill Courtney takes over to finish season CORAL GABLES, Fla. (AP) — Jim Larrañaga has stepped down as Miami’s men’s basketball coach effective immediately. Larrañaga will be replaced by associate head coach Bill Courtney — one of Larrañaga’s best friends for the past three decades or so — for the remainder of the season. The now-former coach says he loves the university but believes it's the right time to step away. Larrañaga says "I’ve tried every which way to keep this going.” Larrañaga joins a long line of prominent college basketball coaches who have left their jobs in recent years citing the changes in the game and the challenge of coaching in the Name, Image and Likeness era. Detroit Red Wings fire coach Derek Lalonde, name Todd McLellan as his replacement The Detroit Red Wings have fired coach Derek Lalonde and named Todd McLellan as his replacement. The move a day after Christmas comes after the Red Wings lost 21 of their first 34 games this season. They're on a three-game skid. Assistant Bob Boughner was also fired and Trent Yawney hired to work on McLellan's staff. McLellan signed a multiyear contract to start his fourth NHL head coaching job. Lalonde was nearly midway through his third season with Detroit after winning the Stanley Cup twice as an assistant with Tampa Bay. Pat Riley says the Miami Heat will not trade Jimmy Butler ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — If Jimmy Butler wants a trade, the Miami Heat have no plans to make him happy. Heat President Pat Riley — in a rare move — spoke out to address rumors Thursday, saying the team has no plans to trade Butler. It’s a clear sign that, if necessary, the team will be willing to let Butler leave as a free agent and get nothing in return. Riley says in a release distributed by the team "we usually don’t comment on rumors, but all this speculation has become a distraction to the team and is not fair to the players and coaches.” Haaland penalty failure and Fernandes red card pile on woes for City and United in Premier League Erling Haaland’s failure from the penalty spot and Bruno Fernandes’ latest red card have compounded the woes of Manchester City and Manchester United on another tough day for the two Premier League giants. City dropped more points in its improbably poor run of form by drawing 1-1 at home to Everton. Haaland had a spot kick saved by England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford in the 53rd minute. The four-time defending champions have only won one of its last 13 games in all competitions. While City is languishing in seventh place, United is even further adrift in 14th place after a 2-0 loss at lowly Wolverhampton. Fernandes was sent off in the 47th. Simona Halep withdraws from Australian Open qualifying because of knee and shoulder pain MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — Two-time Grand Slam champion Simona Halep has pulled out of Australian Open qualifying and a tuneup tournament in Auckland, New Zealand, because of pain in her knee and shoulder. Thursday's news represents the latest interruption of her comeback from a drug suspension. Halep posted on social media that she was feeling poorly after participating in an exhibition event in Abu Dhabi. The 33-year-old Romanian said she is planning to next enter the Transylvania Open in her home country, where play begins Feb. 3. Halep was granted a wild-card entry for qualifying in the Australian Open last week. Mahomes throws 3 TDs as Chiefs clinch AFC's top seed by breezing past the skidding Steelers 29-10 PITTSBURGH (AP) — Patrick Mahomes passed for 320 yards and three touchdowns and the Kansas City Chiefs locked up the top seed in the AFC for the fourth time in seven seasons with a 29-10 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers. The two-time defending Super Bowl champions raced to an early 13-point lead and were never really threatened by the Steelers (10-6). Pittsburgh has dropped three straight to see its chances of capturing the AFC North take another hit. Travis Kelce caught eight passes for 84 yards and a touchdown. Kelce also became the third tight end in NFL history to reach 1,000 receptions, joining Tony Gonzalez and Jason Witten. Jackson breaks Vick's NFL rushing record for QBs in Ravens' rout over Texans HOUSTON (AP) — Baltimore’s Lamar Jackson passed Michael Vick for the most yards rushing by a quarterback in NFL history in a 31-2 win over the Houston Texans in Wednesday. Jackson moved past Vick on a 6-yard run in the third quarter. Jackson had 87 yards rushing to give him 6,110 yards, moving him past Vick, who piled up 6,109 in his 13-year career. LeBron James scores 31 in record 19th Christmas Day game as Lakers hold off Curry, Warriors 115-113 SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Austin Reaves scored the winning layup with one second left after Stephen Curry tied it on a 31-foot 3-pointer with seven seconds remaining, LeBron James had 31 points and 10 assists playing in his NBA-record 19th Christmas Day game, and the Los Angeles Lakers held off the Golden State Warriors 115-113. Curry scored 38 with eight 3s, hitting one under pressure from the baseline with 12 seconds left and another with 2:49 remaining only for James to answer from long range on the other end. Reaves recorded a triple-double. Bridges scores season-high 41, Knicks withstand Wembanyama's monster Christmas debut to edge Spurs NEW YORK (AP) — Mikal Bridges scored a season-high 41 points, and the New York Knicks overcame 42 from Victor Wembanyama in a monster Christmas debut to edge the San Antonio Spurs 117-114 on Wednesday. Wembanyama set a Spurs record for points on the holiday and added 18 rebounds, four assists and four blocked shots. The reigning Western Conference player of the week made six 3-pointers. But Bridges shot 17 for 25 from the field, 6 for 9 behind the arc, to make sure the Knicks had just enough offense to win their fifth in a row and improve to 20-10. How Is The Market Feeling About LandBridge?

Man City problems ‘not about one player’ – Pep Guardiola defends Erling HaalandThe search and rescue organization for Metro Vancouver's North Shore mountains is warning people to do their research after two international visitors became stranded while relying on hiking apps to plan their routes. Allan McMordie with North Shore Rescue managed the Sunday night rescue of a man from Goat Ridge, a backcountry area behind Grouse Mountain. He said the man told rescuers he had not been expecting snow, despite two of the local ski hills opening with fresh powder last month. "All you had to do was look at the top of the mountains from Vancouver and know there's snow up there," he said in an interview. "To be in running shoes and not even expecting any snow was pretty naive." The man from France had set out on a marked route, then decided to make his way through very rough, steep terrain to a separate trail at significantly higher elevation. "This is rugged backcountry," McMordie said. "It's almost impassable." McMordie could not confirm which apps the hikers in both recent rescues were using, but said a lack of any marked route or trail reports is a good indication not to use the application. In any case, he said trip planning should involve multiple sources for information. If the man from France had done any research, McMordie said he would have discovered the backcountry area where he was rescued is closed for the winter. In both recent cases, he said there are signs at each trailhead with maps showing trails and topography, along with reminders about key steps in trip planning, he said. Both men were lucky to have been able to make 911 calls, McMordie added, as service is patchy in the area and their phone batteries had nearly run out. Above all, he said hikers should tell someone else where they're going and when they expect to return, so that person can alert local authorities if necessary. "Absolutely nobody knew where this person was and what he was doing that day," McMordie said of the man from France. "If he had not been able to get that (911) call out, he would still be there." Sunday's rescue on Goat Ridge came three days after a similar call, when another man "seriously underestimated the difficulty" of a route marked in an online hiking app, North Shore Rescue said in a statement posted to social media. The group said there is "barely a trail" in the summer and "nothing whatsoever" in the winter, making for "full mountaineering conditions" at this time of year. The man called for help after hiking for eight hours that left him "tired, soaked (and) hypothermic" as the sun was setting," it said. It's doubtful the man would have survived the night in the Mount Seymour backcountry if he hadn't been able to make the call, the rescue group added. The man had been staying in a short-term accommodation and had taken an Uber to the trailhead. Only his girlfriend in Norway knew where he was, and he was not wearing or carrying adequate gear for the conditions, McMordie said. Vancouver-based Stephen Hui, the author of several B.C. hiking guidebooks, said the rough, mountainous terrain steps away from urban Metro Vancouver and the extent of the snowpack in winter is a surprise for many visiting hikers. Hui said online apps can be helpful and often provide commentary about trail conditions from other hikers, but it's crucial to look at additional sources of information, including complete maps and provincial and national park websites. He said local authorities and outdoor groups have some responsibility for people heading into the backcountry, and there is room for more signage and education. Ultimately, though, he said people must be responsible for themselves. "We can't handhold everybody," he said. "There's always going to be dangers in hiking." The Manchester City legend, 54, is managing the team in the interim following the departure of the Holland-born coach. And the former striker, who scored more than a hundred times for the Cityzens, oversaw his first game at the helm when Villa hosted Charlton in the Women's League Cup on Wednesday night. De Pauw's exit, announced by the club yesterday, came three days after the Villans fell to a fifth loss in nine top-flight games. The Dutchman is alleged to have made unprofessional remarks to players, including comments about their appearance. According to The Guardian concerns were raised in-house about the claims which the club are reported to have looked into. The Sun has contacted Villa for comment on those claims. The Dutch coach left the club "with immediate effect" after just six months at the helm. Just 24 hours earlier the ex-Bayer Leverkusen chief posted what many regarded as a cryptic message on LinkedIn . De Pauw wrote: "Finding the balance between the short term and long term in the best interest for the team and club is not an easy thing. It comes with big sacrifices." FOOTBALL FREE BETS AND SIGN UP DEALS "You need the backing of the club if you want the team to go from average, to good, to better, to top. "This reselecting and developing of a team is a necessary thing to do to make these steps. I did this in Leverkusen the past two seasons selecting on football, behaviour and characteristics of the players. "I never shy away from difficult decisions and I will certainly not win the popularity contests. Because you can never satisfy everyone. "But always keeping standards high to get the best out of the team and each other." Following a promising pre-season that included a friendly win against Man City, the Villans have endured a poor start to this season. The team were trounced 4-0 by Arsenal at the Emirates on Sunday and have notched just ONE win in the WSL so far this term. Their dismal run has left them fourth from bottom and just one point above bottom-placed Crystal Palace before their final WSL game this year on Sunday. The team are due to host West Ham who are ninth with eight points and also battling to avoid the drop. De Pauw's departure was announced in a brief written statement published on their web site. They say Goater will be in charge of their women’s squad “until a new manager is appointed and will be supported by the wider coaching team”. The former Bermuda international joined Villa as assistant women’s team head coach in August. Before then Goater had worked as an assistant to Cityzens women’s side gaffer Gareth Taylor from April last year to June until this summer.

David Bonderman, who managed money for one of the richest families in Texas, helped create one of the giants of the private-equity business and pushed to bring professional hockey to Seattle , died Wednesday. He was 82. Bonderman's death was announced by TPG, the asset-management firm he co-founded, his Wildcat Capital Management investment company, the Seattle Kraken hockey team, and his family. They said he was surrounded by his family, but did not say where he died. A spokesperson for the Kraken said they would not disclose the cause of death. For much of his career, Bonderman kept a low profile in public, rarely granting interviews with news organizations. He concentrated on corporate takeovers and other investments, many of which were highly profitable. Forbes magazine estimated his wealth at $6.4 billion in April. "Rarely the loudest person in the room, but often the smartest, David remained humble, once saying that his personal strength was ‘Not knowing a lot about something but knowing enough to make a decent decision,’” his family and companies said in a statement. Kraken CEO Tod Leiweke said Bonderman played a role in creating the team's logo and brand. “David was a visionary; unafraid to take on challenges and make bold decisions. He was smart, witty, curious, and humble,” Leiweke said. As an investor, Bonderman had a contrarian streak, and he was not afraid of offending others, even those in the White House. Over the Obama administration's objections, he attended Russian President Vladimir Putin's annual economic forums in 2014 and 2015 — after Russia annexed Crimea from Ukraine and was slapped with U.S. sanctions. Bonderman also was known for throwing lavish birthday parties. The Rolling Stones played at his 60th birthday bash, and former Beatle Paul McCartney headlined his 70th birthday soiree. Both events were in Las Vegas. Story continues below video Born in Los Angeles on Nov. 27, 1942, Bonderman attended the University of Washington and Harvard Law School, from which he graduated in 1966. After a stint teaching law at Tulane University, he joined the U.S. Justice Department in the late 1960s, then in 1971 became a partner and expert in corporate and securities law at Arnold & Porter, a high-powered Washington, D.C., law firm. In 1983, he went to work for the Robert M. Bass Group investment company in Fort Worth, Texas. With money from the Bass family , which traced its wealth to the exploits of Texas oil wildcatter Sid Richardson, Bonderman and partner Jim Coulter made several leveraged buyouts in the 1980s, including a hugely profitable investment in Continental Airlines. Bonderman, Coulter and Bill Price started Texas Pacific Group in 1992. According to its website, the private-equity firm now known as TPG manages $239 billion in assets and has invested in industries that include health care, technology and business services. The firm was a major early investor in short-term rental site Airbnb and music-streaming service Spotify. Bonderman served on several corporate and philanthropic boards. In 2017, he resigned from the Uber board hours after making an insensitive comment during a meeting on sexism at the ride-hailing company. When fellow director Arianna Huffington said data showed that having one woman on the board made it more likely a second would be added, Bonderman interjected, “Actually, what it shows is that it’s much more likely to be more talking.” He later apologized. In politics, Bonderman was a longtime backer of former Texas governor and Republican President George W. Bush but flipped to support Bush's challenger, Democrat John Kerry, in the 2004 election. He famously told The Wall Street Journal that Bush was “a really good guy” but had divided the country. “He’s turning out to be the worst president since Millard Fillmore — and that’s probably an insult to Millard Fillmore,” Bonderman said. With his wealth from TPG, Bonderman purchased a minority stake in the Boston Celtics and was a member of the group holding a majority interest in the Seattle Kraken , an expansion team in the National Hockey League. American Airlines Group Inc said that a tech issue with DXC Technology Co, a third-party vendor that maintains the company’s flight-operating systems, caused a brief ground stop on all US flights on Tuesday. The carrier said that a network hardware-related issue has been resolved and flights have resumed. American’s flight-operating system allows for air transport to be coordinated and dispatched, it said. The halt lasted for about an hour. “We sincerely apologise to our customers for the inconvenience,” American said in a statement. “It’s all hands on deck as our team is working diligently to get customers where they need to go as quickly as possible.” The airline didn’t say if it expected any further delays or other knock-on effects. American Airlines had 3,320 domestic flights and 581 international flights scheduled for the day, according to aviation data provider Cirium. Only 19 of its flights were cancelled by the early afternoon, in line with the typical 1% cancellation rate across airlines, Cirium said. But there were delays: Only about 37% of American Airlines flights were leaving on time as of the early afternoon, Cirium said, noting that most airlines aim for 80% of flights departing and arriving within 15 minutes of the scheduled time. The data provider said that most of the delays at American were under two hours. For example, 72% of flights departing out of American’s Dallas hub left within an hour of the scheduled time. “Based on previous such incidents, it appears American has been able to maintain its schedule, albeit with delays,” said Cirium spokesperson Mike Arnot. “There may be an uptick in cancellations later in the day as crews time out.” American Airlines had said earlier it was experiencing technical issues affecting all of its flights, disrupting operations on a day when the Federal Aviation Administration expects to see about 30,000 US flights across all carriers. Some online postings said the airline suffered a software outage preventing it from calculating weight and balance requirements for its flights. The incident comes after Delta Air Lines Inc suffered a multi-day grounding in July affecting thousands of travellers due to a software glitch. Two years ago, Southwest Airlines Co suffered a year-end meltdown involving computer-system issues. I’ve never been one of those people who thought I could tell the difference between sound systems: Whatever I had was fine. Even worse, for the last twelve years, I held onto a television with pathetically low resolution—and for someone who watches as much TV as I do, my setup was kind of pathetic. But that was old Amanda; over the last year, I have created the living room setup of my dreams, all in my dinky little living room. You don’t need a theater room or even a large space to create a worthy home theater. Use these Black Friday sales to piece together a worthy setup in your home, too. The TV I got for my home theater I started simply: it was time for a new TV. Samsung sent the Neo QLED 8K QN900C for me to test out , and if Oregon allowed me to marry a TV, this one would have a fancy ring on it. While we’re still a ways out from a lot of 8k content (occasionally I load an 8k fireplace video from Youtube, and it might as well be 3D), the 4k content is enough to be noticeable. What is more important is how this model upsamples older content to make it look good at 4k. It’s remarkable. I am a devoted binger of old shows, and I simply could not get over how good Who’s the Boss looked at 65 inches, but new releases are another story altogether. Action films, in particular, are so crisp and rich in color, it really is like being in a small theater. The television has no frame at all, and by design, all the cables and attachments are fixed to an entirely separate unit hidden away, creating a clean canvas. The QN900C comes in 65", 75" and 85” models, and for Black Friday it's almost half off, down to $2,787.95 (from $4,997.99). While you can use the stand it comes with, this television deserves to be mounted on the wall. I chose a Sanus wall mount that has almost no profile at all, but maximum flexibility in tilt and angle—and it is also on sale for Black Friday, 20% off the usual price of $109.99, down to just $87.99. Just to keep the wall nice and clean, I also recommend an Echogear wall outlet , usually $74.99, down to $59.99 right now, that is recessed into the wall behind the television, even if you don’t have an outlet there right now , so you don’t see any wires coming out from the tv. It’s quite brilliant. Surround sound Ten years ago when everyone was buying Sonos systems, I balked. They were so expensive, I was fluent in tech hacking and I believed I could figure out a better system for less money. The thing is, I couldn’t. Sonos creates an in house wifi network, so unlike Bluetooth speakers that get interrupted every time you get a text message or move out of range, they’re consistent. You can group them and stream almost anything to them. I gave in a number of years ago, but this past year I upgraded my living room from older units to a new Arc soundbar , a pair of Era 300s for left and right speakers and, finally, a Sub 4 for bass. Having left and right speakers in your surround means you feel like you are in the movie, as sounds play on independent speakers, immersing you. The subwoofer will create vibration in the music, so you feel the sound in your bones. The bass notes are what is often missing from home setups, and the Sonos Sub 4 fills the space with a deep, rumbling sound. There are other systems that use wifi networks and give consistent quality sound: Samsung has a set of speakers, as does LG, and Sonos has lower-end speakers as well—the Beam, Mini Sub, and Era100s. Choose a system that fits your budget; all those Sonos pieces are on sale for Black Friday. Arc Soundbar $699, regularly $899 Beam (Gen 2) Soundbar $369, regularly $499 Ray Soundbar $169, regularly $279 Era 100 Speaker $199, regularly $249 Era 300 Speaker $359, regularly $449 Sub Mini $343, regularly $429 Sub 4 $679, regularly $799 Regardless of what speakers you end up buying, remember that you want to mount them in order to get the biggest bang for your buck in terms of surround sound. Flexson has well reviewed wall mounts for the Era speakers and a Sanus mount for my sound bar. Theater lighting I’ve talked myself blue in the face about the profound effect Nanoleaf lights have had on my home over the last year, but none as much as the 4D system. Nanoleaf puts a small camera on the screen of your TV, and then a series of LED lights on the back of the TV that reflect onto the wall behind it, and they echo the colors that are playing on the screen. The effect is mesmerizing, but it really sings when you add additional units throughout the room, all of which sync to the TV. Kill the overhead lights and flip on the Nanoleaf lights and Netflix nights are completely changed. Even when you’re just playing music, the Nanoleafs play in time to the beat. 4D system TV sync and LED lights $95.99, regularly $119.99 Lines $59.99, regularly $99.99 Shapes $59.99, regularly $99.99 Atmospheric control I had a fine set of shades for my various windows, but it never completely cut out the light in the room. Also, I had to get up to open and close them, which felt very 2010. It was time to get smart, so I looked to Rolli , one of the companies making smart blackout shades. There are plenty of companies that offer blackout shades, including an exciting option from Switchbot, which has just released configurable smart blackout rollershades , too. My colleague Daniel had a good experience with SmartWingz. To control the temperature, I looked to Dyson and my Hot and Cool Purifier ($644.95), which silently makes the room frosty or toasty, and purifiers the air at the same time. The oscillation is what makes it perfect for your theater. Bringing it all together with automation Almost all the devices listed above are smart, from the TV to the blinds. This meant I could bring everything together and automate it for the perfect theater setting. I had this all set up as an automation in Alexa, but things got even smarter when Flic sent me their new gadgets, the Flic button and Twist. These are smart buttons you can program to individual products or routines. My Flic Twist , which I’ve popped onto the wall next to where I sit on the couch, will lower the blinds, turn off the overhead lights, turn on the Nanoleaf, and fire up the TV and the Dyson. Granted, I could do the same from my phone, and since the Samsung TV also acts as a smart hub , I could do everything right from my TV.spin ph 99

‘Disgraceful’: Labor points fingers as clock ticks down

Lea Miller-Tooley hopped off a call to welcome the Baylor women’s basketball team to the Atlantis resort in the Bahamas, where 80-degree temperatures made it easy for the Bears to settle in on Paradise Island a week before Thanksgiving. About 5,000 miles west of the Caribbean nation, similar climes awaited Maui Invitational men's teams in Hawaii. They’ve often been greeted with leis, the traditional Hawaiian welcome of friendship. College basketball teams and fans look forward to this time of the year. The holiday week tournaments feature buzzworthy matchups and all-day TV coverage, sure, but there is a familiarity about them as they help ward off the November chill. For four decades, these sandy-beach getaways filled with basketball have become a beloved mainstay of the sport itself. “When you see (ESPN’s) ‘Feast Week’ of college basketball on TV, when you see the Battle 4 Atlantis on TV, you know college basketball is back,” said Miller-Tooley, the founder and organizer of the Battle 4 Atlantis men's and women's tournaments. “Because it’s a saturated time of the year with the NFL, college football and the NBA. But when you see these gorgeous events in these beautiful places, you realize, ‘Wow, hoops are back, let’s get excited.’” The Great Alaska Shootout was the trend-setting multiple-team event (MTE) nearly five decades ago. The brainchild of late Alaska-Anchorage coach Bob Rachal sought to raise his program’s profile by bringing in national-power programs, which could take advantage of NCAA rules allowing them to exceed the maximum allotment of regular-season games if they played the three-game tournament outside the contiguous 48 states. The first edition, named the Sea Wolf Classic, saw N.C. State beat Louisville 72-66 for the title on Nov. 26, 1978. The Maui Invitational followed in November 1984, borne from the buzz of NAIA program Chaminade’s shocking upset of top-ranked Virginia and 7-foot-4 star Ralph Sampson in Hawaii two years earlier. Events kept coming, with warm-weather locales getting in on the action. The Paradise Jam in the U.S. Virgin Islands. The Cancun Challenge in Mexico. The Cayman Islands Classic. The Jamaica Classic. The Myrtle Beach Invitational joining the Charleston Classic in South Carolina. Numerous tournaments in Florida. Some events have faded away like the Puerto Rico Tipoff and the Great Alaska Shootout, the latter in 2017 amid event competition and schools opting for warm-weather locales. Notre Dame takes on Chaminade during the first half of a 2017 game in Lahaina, Hawaii. Miller-Tooley’s push to build an MTE for Atlantis began as a December 2010 doubleheader with Georgia Tech beating Richmond and Virginia Tech beating Mississippi State in a prove-it moment for a tournament’s viability. It also required changing NCAA legislation to permit MTEs in the Bahamas. Approval came in March 2011; the first eight-team Atlantis men’s tournament followed in November. That tournament quickly earned marquee status with big-name fields, with Atlantis champions Villanova (2017) and Virginia (2018) later winning that season’s NCAA title. Games run in a ballroom-turned-arena at the resort, where players also check out massive swimming pools, water slides and inner-tube rapids surrounded by palm trees and the Atlantic Ocean. “It’s just the value of getting your passport stamped, that will never get old,” Miller-Tooley said. “Watching some of these kids, this may be their first and last time – and staff and families – that they ever travel outside the United States. ... You can see through these kids’ eyes that it’s really an unbelievable experience.” ACC Network analyst Luke Hancock knows that firsthand. His Louisville team finished second at Atlantis in 2012 and won that year’s later-vacated NCAA title, with Hancock as the Final Four's most outstanding player. “I remember (then-coach Rick Pitino) saying something to the effect of: ‘Some of you guys might never get this opportunity again. We’re staying in this unbelievable place, you’re doing it with people you love,’” Hancock said. “It was a business trip for us there at Thanksgiving, but he definitely had a tone of ‘We’ve got to enjoy this as well.’” Maui offers similar vibes, though 2024 could be a little different as Lahaina recovers from deadly 2023 wildfires that forced the event's relocation last year. North Carolina assistant coach Sean May played for the Tar Heels’ Maui winner in 2004 and was part of UNC’s staff for the 2016 champion, with both teams later winning the NCAA title. May said “you just feel the peacefulness” of the area — even while focusing on games — and savors memories of the team taking a boat out on the Pacific Ocean after title runs under now-retired Hall of Famer Roy Williams. “Teams like us, Dukes, UConns – you want to go to places that are very well-run,” May said. “Maui, Lea Miller with her group at the Battle 4 Atlantis, that’s what drives teams to come back because you know you’re going to get standard A-quality of not only the preparation but the tournament with the way it’s run. Everything is top-notch. And I think that brings guys back year after year.” That’s why Colorado coach Tad Boyle is so excited for the Buffaloes’ first Maui appearance since 2009. “We’ve been trying to get in the tournament since I got here,” said Boyle, now in his 15th season. And of course, that warm-weather setting sure doesn’t hurt. “If you talk about the Marquettes of the world, St. John’s, Providence – they don’t want that cold weather,” said NBA and college TV analyst Terrence Oglesby, who played for Clemson in the 2007 San Juan Invitational in Puerto Rico. “They’re going to have to deal with that all January and February. You might as well get a taste of what the sun feels like.” Michigan State head coach Tom Izzo argues a call during the first half of a Nov. 16 game against Bowling Green in East Lansing, Michigan. Mi zzo is making his fourth trip to Maui. The men’s Baha Mar Championship in Nassau, Bahamas, got things rolling last week with No. 11 Tennessee routing No. 13 Baylor for the title. The week ahead could boast matchups befitting the Final Four, with teams having two weeks of action since any opening-night hiccups. “It’s a special kickoff to the college basketball season,” Oglesby said. “It’s just without the rust.” On the women’s side, Atlantis began its fourth eight-team women’s tournament Saturday with No. 16 North Carolina and No. 18 Baylor, while the nearby Baha Mar resort follows with two four-team women’s brackets that include No. 2 UConn, No. 7 LSU, No. 17 Mississippi and No. 20 N.C. State. Then come the men’s headliners. The Maui Invitational turns 40 as it opens Monday back in Lahaina. It features second-ranked and two-time reigning national champion UConn, No. 4 Auburn, No. 5 Iowa State and No. 10 North Carolina. The Battle 4 Atlantis opens its 13th men’s tournament Wednesday, topped by No. 3 Gonzaga, No. 16 Indiana and No. 17 Arizona. Michigan State Hall of Famer Tom Izzo is making his fourth trip to Maui, where he debuted as Jud Heathcote’s successor at the 1995 tournament. Izzo's Spartans have twice competed at Atlantis, last in 2021. “They’re important because they give you something in November or December that is exciting,” Izzo said. Any drawbacks? “It’s a 10-hour flight,” he said of Hawaii. Mike Tyson, left, slaps Jake Paul during a weigh-in ahead of their heavyweight bout, Thursday, Nov. 14, 2024, in Irving, Texas. Strictly Come Dancing, the BBC’s flagship dance competition that the UK has taken to its hearts since hitting the screens in 2004, relied on Shure to deliver outstanding audio and ensure that the dazzling performances could be enjoyed by its millions of viewers. Filmed at Elstree Film Studios, Strictly Come Dancing features celebrities paired with professional dancers competing against each other in a range of dance styles. Behind the glamorous facade of sequined costumes, dramatic performances and music lies an intricate technical landscape in which audio technology plays a crucial role. Terry Tew Sound and Light (TTSL) opted to deploy Shure’s Axient Digital Wireless System for the show. The AV solutions provider's head of RF, Jonathan Edwards, says: “Elstree Film Studios, with its multiple stages and studios, presents unique RF spectrum challenges which can be further exacerbated when a touring artist comes with their own touring sound system." TTSL's technical team provided more than 72 receiver channels and 18 in-ear monitors for each show to manage the significant challenges posed by such a sophisticated audio set-up. The environment, saturated with LED screens and multiple broadcasting systems, creates a complex electromagnetic landscape that demands superior wireless solutions, making antenna placement, cable loss and gain make-up crucial. The wireless set-up included an array of Shure equipment including AD4D two-channel digital wireless receivers, Axient digital handheld microphones, Axient Digital AD600 Spectrum Manager, and PSM1000 in-ear monitoring system. Richard Hawkins, RF tech on the show for TTSL, says the AD600 Spectrum Manager and Shure’s Wireless Workbench software providing high-level monitoring and management capabilities during every show. "Our ability to scan and compare RF environments across dress rehearsals and live shows keeps us consistently ahead of potential issues, and being able to monitor the incoming RF from one screen makes it simple," he adds. The integration of WAVETOOL software enables real-time monitoring of battery levels, RF status and link quality, allowing immediate technical adjustments throughout the production. When the TTSL team tested the new PSM in-ear monitoring system on the show, they were impressed by the coverage. “It was incredible how positive the coverage was," says Hawkins. "The noise floor was better than anything else we’ve heard in the Strictly studio.” Edwards, meanwhile, commends Shure's training programmes, which empower technical teams to navigate increasingly complex wireless landscapes. “Their educational seminars have become instrumental in ‘demystifying the dark arts of RF’, ensuring that productions like Strictly Come Dancing can push the boundaries of live broadcasting technology,” he says.NoneThe SEC and Big Ten championship games are shaping up to be rematches from top-five matchups in the regular season. Oregon and Ohio State will revisit their 32-31 classic on Oct. 12 if the Buckeyes beat Michigan on Saturday. Georgia beat Texas 30-15 on Oct. 19, and they will have a rematch if the Longhorns beat Texas A&M on Saturday. How do we sell these matchups in terms of the College Football Playoff bracket? Honestly, we're not sure, and that is reflected in our Week 14 Bowl Projections. For now, we are picking Oregon and Texas to win those games. Look at our bracket . That means the SEC loser – Georgia – would fall to the No. 8 seed, where a win would earn a matchup against Oregon – the No. 1 overall seed in the bracket. That is not a favorable draw for either team. The SEC winner – Texas – would have a favorable draw as the No. 2 seed, but not as good as Ohio State – which could face No. 12 Boise State and No. 4 Arizona State – in either order depending on how those projected conference champions are seeded. The Buckeyes have the best draw of any of these teams, and it exposes the true value of conference championship games and the need to just seed these teams 1-12 the proper way. In the end, we think some combination of Oregon, Ohio State, Texas and Georgia will be the championship game, and perhaps Notre Dame gets in the way. Those first-round games will be played on campus: DATE BOWL MATCHUP Dec. 20 First-Round CFP game No. 11 SMU at No. 6 Penn State Dec. 21 First-Round CFP game No. 9 Indiana at No. 8 Georgia Dec. 21 First-Round CFP game No. 12 Boise State at No. 5 Ohio State Dec. 21 First-Round CFP game No. 10 Tennessee at No. 7 Notre Dame The best matchup would be Tennessee at Notre Dame. Those schools have split eight previous meetings and have not played since a home-and-home the Irish swept in 2004-05. Georgia would be the lone SEC school to host a playoff game in this scenario, and if they win the SEC championship game then Texas would be in that spot. They can compare schedules with Indiana. Boise State (41.2 ppg.) and SMU (39.3 ppg.) rank in the top six in scoring offense this season. How would they fare at hostile 100,000-plus venues at Ohio Stadium and Beaver Stadium? College Football Playoff quarterfinal predictions A look at the College Football Playoff quarterfinal matchups for the 2024-25 season. Those games will be played at the traditional New Year's Day Six bowl sites: DATE BOWL MATCHUP Dec. 31 Vrbo Fiesta Bowl (quarterfinal) No. 4 Arizona State vs. No. 5 Ohio State Jan. 1 Chick-Fil-A Peach Bowl (quarterfinal) No. 3 Miami vs. No. 6 Penn State Jan. 1 Rose Bowl Game presented by Prudential (quarterfinal) No. 1 Oregon vs. No. 8 Georgia Jan. 1 Allstate Sugar Bowl (quarterfinal) No. 2 Texas vs. No. 7 Notre Dame Ignore the seeding and just look at the field. Would an eight-team playoff be better? The Sun Devils and Hurricanes would be underdogs against Big Ten teams, and that matchup between Oregon and Georgia was our pick for the CFP championship game in Week 1 1. College Football Playoff semifinal predictions A look at the College Football Playoff semifinal matchups for the 2024-25 season. Those games will be played at the traditional New Year's Day Six bowl sites: DATE BOWL MATCHUP Jan. 9 Capital One Orange Bowl (semifinal) No. 2 Texas vs. No. 6 Penn State Jan. 10 Cotton Bowl Classic (semifinal) No. 1 Oregon vs. No. 5 Ohio State Three Big Ten teams in the semifinals? A potential three-match between the Ducks and Buckeyes? That is in the cards in this week's projection. We considered picking Notre Dame against Texas, and we would not be surprised if the Irish could make it two straight victories against SEC teams. The Longhorns are the only team among these four that played in the four-team College Football Playoff last season. Would they take advantage of the close-to-home atmosphere at the Cotton Bowl? College Football Playoff championship pick A look at the College Football Playoff championship matchup for the 2024-25 season. That game is scheduled for Monday, Jan. 20 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. DATE BOWL MATCHUP Jan. 20 CFP National championship No. 2 Texas vs. No. 5 Ohio State Yes, we have changed our CFP championship pick the last four weeks. Some of that is dictated on how those matchups are playing out each week. The Buckeyes have been the constant the last three weeks, and they could lose the Big Ten championship game and we still see them making this run. Ditto for Texas. Quinn Ewers – who played one year at Ohio State – would be the focus of this matchup, which would be a blue-blooded classic befitting of the first 12-team championship game.

SEATTLE (AP) — The Seattle Seahawks took a bumpy path to sole possession of first place in the NFC West. Sunday's 26-21 win over the Jets featured several special teams miscues, including a 99-yard kickoff return for a touchdown by New York. On the flip side, the Seahawks got their second pick-6 in as many weeks and just enough production by Geno Smith and the offense. The Seahawks' uneven performance was characteristic of a season in which they started 3-0, then lost five of six before winning another three in a row to take command of their underachieving division. Seattle (7-5) leads Arizona by one game, with a matchup against the Cardinals looming next weekend. Zach Charbonnet gave Seattle its first lead of the day on an 8-yard touchdown run with 5:37 to go, and the Seahawks' defense capped another strong outing with a game-sealing stop on fourth down. After a sack by Leonard Williams gave the Jets a fourth-and-15 at the 34-yard line, Aaron Rodgers threw a desperation pass to Garrett Wilson that fell incomplete, giving Seattle the ball with 33 seconds left. Williams is on a tear. Maybe this week the league will agree he was the NFC's best defender. The special teams could not have been much worse in the first half. The Seahawks fumbled three kickoffs, losing two, and allowed Kene Nwangwu's 99-yard kickoff return for a TD. Smith led his third game-winning drive of the season and his 11th since he became Seattle’s starting quarterback in 2022. Coach Mike Macdonald and his staff have to address the problem with their kick returners, Shenault and Dee Williams. Two lost fumbles and several muffs could have easily cost Seattle the game. WR DK Metcalf left the game briefly with a knee issue but returned. ... P Michael Dickson was unavailable in the fourth quarter because of back spasms. 38 — The Seahawks decided to go for it on fourth-and-6 at their own 33-yard line with 9:34 left in the game. A primary reason was that Dickson was unavailable to punt because of back spasms. The Seahawks will seek a season sweep of the Cardinals. AP NFL: https://apnews.com/hub/nfl
